I stopped in for dinner, I was very hungry. I ordered the cheese enchiladas. The plate arrived barely warm, the food was not fresh off the stove or out of the oven. The hot sauce and chips were alright but the hot sauce tasted fresh out of a common bottle I've bought myself. I was really thinking it was a good choice to stop in because of all the cars up front. Once inside there were two other tables with people eating. So I'm thinking those other cars must have been employees vehicles. I won't be back. read more

Well, they can't all be winners, kid. Sometimes road trips can be a real drag. Even when your fellow roadtripper (Thelma to your Louise, Smokey to your Bandit...Noxema to your Vida Boheme) is an ex-d.j. with an ipod selection the size of, well, Texas, and the days are sunny and clear and you don't even get turned around much less lost...even then, you may still run into a few bumps in the road. Bumps such as bad meals, for instance. Or not "bad" so much as lackluster, harried and a little bit grimy. This Mexican restaurant off the highway in little Johnson City has a banner that proclaims it the "Best Mexican Food in Town" or some such thing. This could well be a comparitive tautology, but that still doesn't mean it's gonna blow your socks off. I've gone to two stars because the chips were fresh and the salsa was awesome (did I detect a hint of - strangely - fresh oregano?). The rest of our meal, however, including chicken tacos and a beef taco salad, was just not what we were expecting, what with the banner and all. It was passable, at best. Add in the fact that our waiter was overwhelmed by the large lunchtime crowd leaving us to prod the bottom of our glasses for tiny untapped reservoirs of iced tea, and the fact that our tablecloth was quite sticky, and we headed back out the front door with a frowny-face on. I might give it another try if I'm ever in the neighborhood again - the folks filling up all the tables around us seemed to really like the place. On our way to the LBJ ranch , coming from Houston, we got hungry. So we had a look in YELP which good restaurant is close. We like Mexican food, so we decided to go here. Good choice. It's a nice restaurant for a lunch. Don't expect high class seating to take someone out for diner. This is a restaurant where you get a good service, nice food and that for very very good price. So yes. I recommend this if you are or live in Johnson city. Glad we stopped here. read more

The food here is always hot, tasty and delicious. I especially like the guacamole and asada tacos. If you're in the mood for cheese enchiladas, this is the place to eat them. The only thing I wish they would serve is ice cold beer. You can bring in your own, but that's not very convenient. Otherwise, a perfect place to get your Mexican food fix. read more

First I would like to let you know that my girlfriend and I were regular customers at your restaurant and until you had our car towed last night after your employees told us it would be okay for us to wait until today to have it towed, we were going to continue to be customers of your establishment. Now we are unable to even get the scrap value out of the car that the engine blew of in your parking lot while we were picking up a to-go order. Drive right on by. We made the 15 mile trip here to "try" it. The parking lot was full on a Sunday afternoon (well after church). The crow cleared and we were the only customers after about 15 minutes. We had ordered...Carne Guisada for myself and flautas for my wife. Her complaint was that everything was too salty...very salty and the chicken flautas were tough. The meat in the Carne guisada was full of gristle and the refried beans were salty, as was the rice. If we ended up being the only customers in the restaurant, then we ended up getting the last of what was in the kitchen after the cook went home. We mentioned our complaints at checkout, but we were not offered any compensation for a bad meal. It's on yelp now. Fortunately, a lesson was learned. read more

Read the reviews on this restaurant while we were there for the 4th of July but didn't try it until on our way out of town. So glad we did. The food was wonderful!! Wish I could take them home! LOL The shredded chicken taco's were to die for! So juicy and such a wonderful flavor! Would definitely go again ourselves and would recommend it highly! Not a bad place. I ended up getting mixed fajitas for dinner. The beans and rice were pretty good. The shrimp in the fajita mix was really good, but the beef and chicken tasted a bit off. Chicken was dry and the beef was pretty gristley. After the food came out, the waiter never came back to supply more tortillas (2 is never enough for a full thing of fajita meat) or drink refills. Overall, they came across as mediocre.. I might try them again though. read more

This is our very favorite Mexican restaurant, and we've travelled all over. It's the food, atmosphere, people. The carnitas taste exactly the way pork should. The beans are delicious....lots of flavor. Delicious homemade sauces. All the breakfasts are cheap, good, and plentiful. Being able to BYOB and sit outside on their deck on a pretty night is heaven. This was s desperation stop at the end of long, long drive. It's not the fanciest, but the staff was very nice and professional. The food was fantastic and tasted homemade. we were in the mood for mexican today, so we stopped by el charro. not the cleanest place, but the food was ok. they serve you chips and dip as soon as you're seated. i enjoyed the salsa. my husband had the chile relleno. he said it was very good, but there was too much cream cheese and he kinda got sick of it. it was a generous portion. had rice, salad, beans and flour tortillas. i had the grilled chicken and shrimp, and i totally liked mine. came with the same sides as my husband's. it was a grilled chicken breast and it was oddly flat. never had flat chicken before! but it tasted good and i finished the entire dish. we would definitely stop in here again next time. it's a good deal for all that food. read more

Lisa P. -- two stars??? That is so outrageous that I signed up for Yelp just to write this review... El Charro is a great hole in the wall Mexican Restaurant. The help is friendly, the food great, and the prices cheap. Chips are crisp and plentiful and the salsa is some of the best that I've had. Breakfast tacos are awesome - three for $3.75. They are so big that I can usually only eat two of them. Bacon, egg, and cheese are my favorites. The green hot sauce goes great with them. For lunch or dinner, the Pastor pork tacos are awesome. Be sure to add the onions, cilantro, and green hot sauce that come on the side. Shrimp quesadillas are good as well, with some of the better tasting shrimp I've had in a while. Busy at lunch? Sure. Ditto for the 7-8AM breakfast taco rush hour. But the service is still more than adequate. I guess the restaurants in Dallas must be empty at lunch time and their waitstaff idle, but that's certainly not the case around here. Closing note -- El Charro doesn't sell alcohol, *but*, they are more than happy to loan you a bottle opener if you bring your own six pack. There's a convenience store next door.... read more

I have been eating at El Charro since it opened. Friendly family operated restaurant, has been there for a long time. Others come and go, but El Charro is always the same, hot food and fast service. I have never had a complaint and hope to eat there for many years! Their Guacamole is great, I have ordered a bowl of it with chips, just as a snack or lite lunch! Clean restrooms, plenty of parking and very handicap friendly. They also have Take-Out, and seem to do a lot of it. read more

We stopped here on Sunday for lunch. I was surprised that they had 2 specials - most restaurants have lunch specials on Monday thru Friday. The salsa for the chips was excellent with a nice kick. I had the special which was the Texan plate. Two enchiladas (choice of beef, chicken, or cheese), some carne guisada, rice, beans and a good sized scoop of guacamole for $6.99! Hubby had a steak dish. Everything was delicious. One negative that the owners need to address ASAP is that the tiles right in front of the door are broken and loose. Combined with the fact that there are no hand rails for the steep stairs, this is an accident waiting to happen. read more

EXCELLENT! Myself, my family, many friends and many aquantances that are obviously not taking the time to comment. LOVE LOVE LOVE EL CHARRO in Johnson City Texas. Many great feastivals here and there will be many many more. Authentic is correct. Huge portions and sweet prices. I could go on and on about the food, but it would take a whole page. Asada Tacos to die for. I have eaten at least 95 percent of what they have to offer on the menu. I LOVE it all :) We have been going here regularly, since they opened. Day one. I absolutly adore the staff. I have to say, it is much better than the Blanco, Texas location. Odd since it is right down the road. Very impressed! My wife and I recently used them to cater a dinner and breakfast event down in Texas and they were outstanding for both. For the dinner we had nacho appetizers and fajitas (chicken, steak, shrimp). We received many compliments from our guests on the food, the meat and veggies for the fajitas were perfectly done. People really liked the queso for the nachos, and I thought that their guacamole was one of the best that I've tried. The breakfast catering was equally as successful, my favorite being the barbacoa breakfast tacos, which were awesome. In terms of value, their pricing was by far the best, and we shopped quite a few places. The service was was on time for both events and they were extremely easy to work with.
