I'm doubling down on my review of El Charro. I had one of the better Cali burritos here recently and I want to tell you all about it. Nicely charred beef that eats almost like BBQ burnt ends with some crispy char. Excellent potatoes and guacamole all with the perfect ratios and well assembled. (These things matter, people!) Most importantly and I think most under mentioned in these reviews is the quality of their salsas / hot sauces. Don't sleep on the hot chili oil sauce at the salsa bar either. Carne asada tiny pieces were crispy and tasted burnt, but there's only 10 mini pieces in entire burrito. I used to love this place but the quality is gone. Worst carne asada burrito ever. No guacamole, no pico de gallo, no cheese. Straight beans & rice w/ a few nuggets of overcooked carne asada. Total fail and absolute rip off. Review of food ordered to go: This establishment is across the street to Vons shopping plaza. Ordered Carne Asada Burrito and Carnitas tacos. We all liked the carnitas tacos better than the carne asada burrito. We've had better carne asada burrito elsewhere. The carnitas tacos were very tasty! I'd order those again. They have a salsa station and you can help yourself with either red or green salsa or both! We had the green salsa and it was good. The station also served pre-cut limes which looked old. Excellent taco place, a little pricey, understandable in the mountain area. We ordered 2 shrimp, 2 fish, 1 beef and one other. All good especially the shrimp taco. The fish is a little over fried. The price seemed high but I was visiting from Texas and this was my first Mexican meal in Mammoth. Overall, everything seems more expensive in Mammoth. This place is SO good. Idk why it doesn't have all 5-stars. I was slightly skeptical due to the Yelp rating but I stopped in and got fish and shrimp tacos. Dude- the fish tacos are some of the best I've ever had and I live in LA. The taco salad with carnitas is also delicious. I suspect they make everything homemade and tortillas/chips fresh by hand. This review took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and is for my outdoor dining experience. Masks are required. Social distancing is accepted as the norm. They have a gallon jug of hand sanitizer. They have set up a lovely blue canopy tarp and placed the rest of their tables outdoors in front of the restaurant so that you may dine safely outdoors. If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. If I could eat here every day, I would. After an invigorating day on the slopes I was hungry. Backstory: I had moved up to the PNW and left my hometown of San Diego, aka the Land of Tacos. After a quick yelp search this place popped up. This meant my dog was able to come along and park himself under my chair so he could vacuum up any meaty scraps that fall from my salsa-covered hands. As you can see from my photo, I got 4 types of tacos and a horchata drink. Let me tell you, this place hit different. My San Diego taco heart cried. I have finally scratched my taco itch. I've been deprived of a San Diego quality taco for far too long. My eyes dilated and my mouth drooled. Lengua taco: soft, tender meat but doesn't fall apart. Cut into neat little cubes in my double corn tortilla. No beefy odor like some places have. I wish my stomach was bigger. Adobada taco: nicely marinated and essence of pineapple permeates the perfectly grilled meat. I ordered two of these for obvious reasons. Carnitas taco: this gave me a flashback just like that scene in Disney's Ratatouille where the food critic Anton Ego eats the ratatouille and flashes back to his childhood. Instead I flashed back to my friend's house during her holiday party in high school, with ponche navidad in one pot and and her mom's homemade carnitas in the pot beside it. I have not had carnitas this good in over half my lifespan. Soft, tender, bursting with juice and flavor, with just enough oil to elevate this taco to heaven. Wow. My stomach shed a tear. Carne asada: perfectly executed. Not tough or stringy. BBQ'd to perfection with a hint of char and caramelization. Salsa: I have been team green for as long as I can remember. Green salsa is excellent in its own light. But the red salsa here is next level. You can taste the roasted peppers and aromatics. It has a nice kick without being runny-nose spicy. Sides: they authentically provide radishes, limes, and salt. The best thing though is their roasted jalapeños and caramelized onions. Don't you dare throw this stuff out. Stuff it into your tacos and close your eyes as you chew. Horchata: standard horchata with the perfect balance of sweetness and cinnamon. My new favorite taco joint. I'm coming back here every time I go to Mammoth. read more

El Charro is a relatively small place, maybe seats 30 some people. The seating area is a little worn down but okay. The staff was very nice and the food came out quickly. Everything is ordered at the counter and delivered to the table when ready. Here's what we ordered; chicken taquito plate, a shrimp burrito and three tacos ( carnitas, fish and shrimp). The tacos were excellent - three was a perfect quantity for dinner as they were pretty large sized. My buddies really liked their food too, though the one that got the taquitos wish he had added another menu item (it was small). The burrito was a good sized portion. The sauces you can get were good too. If the seating area was a bit nicer, El Charro would likely move up a star, the food was pretty darn good. read more

There was a good flow of customers coming in to order to go or sit down plate lunch. This spot is open for indoor and outdoor dining, I was able to bring my pupper which is always a plus for me..but I feel like Mammoth Lakes in general is pet friendly, I see dogs everywhere! The food was great, I didn't order too much just the fish tacos and carne asada tacos, the fish were my favorite especially with all the toppings they add, and their green salsa really adds flavor to it! I enjoyed the asada tacos but the meat was a bit on the dry side but again the salsa, cilantro and grilled onions really added to it! Plenty of space to park and it was getting a little crowded during 11am/noon, they also have little bottles of hand sanitizer which is very convenient, definitely need to come back and try different things on the menu! read more

This place is always solid. Every time we visit Mammoth, we try to hit this spot. We usually get the fish tacos and carne asada tacos. The carne asada is always tender and very flavorful. The fish is always fried perfectly. This last visit we tried the queso birria and it was pretty good. I also tried the California burrito and that was excellent. It was huge!
