The first time I tried El Charro Viejo I was skeptical, but I'm a such a fan of great Mexican food I had to try it. Their food is fresh, tasty and authentic. Servings are HUGE and pricing is reasonable. Love the Carne Asada Platter, the grilled veggies are so good. Another favorite is their Chile Relleno. It's fresh with a nice flavorful sauce and they usually manage to remove all of the seeds. I've not had anything on the menu thus far I wouldn't recommend. Try it! It's good!!! read more

Came here on our first night in town craving Mexican food. Being from the West Coast of CA we were not expecting too much but better than anything we've had at home! Amazing salsa they continuously refill and free refried beans to dip your chips while you wait. Packed with locals so the food came out a bit slower than we're used to but I think that's to be expected and things here are just a bit slower in general than in Cali. Out came my el pastor enchilada and it was out of this world. A combo plate with a carne asada chimichanga (also excellent but a couple chewy pieces of meat) and the plate was filled with really good beans, rice, sour cream and fresh quac. Well we tried this place out I wasn't impressed. The Service was excellent but the food lacked quality and flavor. I tried to order something off the menu but was told that it's only served at lunch . So I had to change my order. I asked for the Two Carna as a street tacos. They brought me two two tacos on Regular sized Corn tortillas the meat had a burnt flavor and was dry. I asked for green sauce I thought that might help the meat but that didn't help. The Cilantro was old so I passed on eating. I told the waitress and I she said was she would let the cook know °°my Girlfriend said her meal was okay but nothing great. So we won't be going back . First time to visit El Charro Viejo and i must say it was great. We had 4 adults and 5 kids and right off the start they has chips, Guacamole, salsa, refried beans etc.. I had the fajitas and it was very large and great food. Everyone loved what they ordered and it was a lot of food. The bill was surprisinglly small. Great quality.. White meat chicken and great shredded beef. We will come back every time we come to GP. read more

They have very good food and reasonably good service. I do not recommend going there at busy times. They seem a bit short-staffed during those times. The food is as good as I have found outside of So Cal. The chile verde, carne asada, and taquitos are very good. The chile verde super burrito is amazing, although I am not used to potatoes in my CV. The beef taquitos are very large (about twice the diameter of the typical) but were deep-fried a bit too long, leaving the ends slightly burned. The guacamole is tangy and quite good. The pico-de-gallo is also delicious. I recommend asking for the slightly sweet "hot" salsa although the regular salsa is good as well. Check it out! It wins! read more

The food at El charro is superb. The guacamole is the best I have ever had, and the salsa is good, too. I have tried a few different menu items and really love the chile relleno. Was passing through town, and went here based on reviews. Have to say we were disappointed. The decor is colorful with vibrant paintings on the wall. Staff were pleasant, but there was 1 waiter who was also the cashier. Needless to say, service was slow and minimal. The food was generous, but very bland. The chile relleno was soggy, too much cheese, and pepper was not tasty. The prices seemed high for this small city. Overall, would not come back again--must be better options in this area. read more

We stopped here on our way up to Portland having checked yelp about 40 miles earlier for a good spot for dinner that would suit us and our 2 kids. We live in the Anderson Valley in northern california and are used to some really good Mexican food but were not ready for the treat that came. This was food cooked with love and knowledge and every bite was perfect. My wife had the shrimp enchiladas and was in heaven. My son had the taquitos which he declared the best while I had the pork in a green sauce - delicious. My daughter just had rice and beans but grazed from our plates enthusiastically. 4 days later we returned South from Portland and were going to stop earlier thinking Grants Pass was to far. We did so at a bbq place but after looking at the choice and each other we got back on I-5 and headed straight for El Charro Viejo! We weren't disappointed. We'd come again in a heartbeat to eat here, my daughter says it's her fave restaurant and it's hard to argue with a determined 9 year old. We were in Grants Pass to meet with my son and his friend and family for dinner. We choose Mexican because we thought we couldn't go wrong. My son choose this place because of it's reviews. I arrived before him, he called and asked what my thoughts were. I said I'm still in the parking lot, but it isn't a real large restaurant. My wife and I went in and were immediately greeted by friendly staff. I asked if they could seat 8 people and was shown to a large table with several chairs around it. We ordered margarita's which arrived just as my son and his friend and family walked in. I saw Molcajete on the menu and ordered it, while the other's ordered various dishes. After dinner I asked what the others thought and was greeted with smiles and happy faces. Speaking for myself, the Molcajete I had was the best I've ever tasted. This dish is named after the traditional Mexican mortar and pestle, and in some restaurants it is served in that same 'utensil' called a Molcajete, the dish is a soup with shrimp, beef, chicken, vegetables, peppers and spices. It is a most wonderful taste. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful answering questions and serving dinner and drinks. We could not have picked a better place to dine. My son picked up the check, so I have no idea what the cost was, but I noticed the prices listed in the menu were very reasonable, and some of them were less than I had expected. This place was definitely worth the 100 plus mile drive just to have dinner, and I would gladly do it again. read more

The food was much better than most of the Mexican restaurants in town. The beans and rice were full of flavor and the rest of the meal was very good, as well. The service and attentiveness were lacking considerably, which was kind of sad since I would have given it a much higher score. We were not offered refills on the chips, beans, salsa, or drinks and when we had finished eating, I had to ask for a to-go box after about 7 minutes and it took another 5 minutes before they acknowledged that we needed the bill so that we could leave. I would happily recommend this restaurant for the enjoyable food, but I will think twice because of the poor service. read more

Just left this restaurant and have no idea how they got the ratings they have. Super burrito was soggy and tasted like vegetable soup with shredded beef in a tortilla. Super nachos were also soggy and had mystery contents with the shredded beef being so wet all the chips were falling apart. Must not wash dishes to well as husbands water had pepper seed in it that he sucked up in his straw. I tried to use ladies room and the toilet was over flowing. Funky spot on 6th street. Atmosphere is a little dated, but clean. Service is friendly and very good. Chips hot and salsa is tasty. Drinks are large. Extensive menu. Well priced. Food always fresh so it takes a little time to arrive. Have eaten there several times and always a good meal. Plenty of food on the plate. We were diverted to Grants Pass from the coast because of high winds & rain. Looked up my trusty Yelp and found this place, tired, cold & wet we were transformed into humans from the food and the wonderful service. On Sunday 3/13/2016, we had the Chili Verde and Cheese Enchilada Verde & Pork taco. The tortillas were fragrant and delicious ! We haven't stopped talking about that meal...just wish for this former California girl they were in Hilton Head, SC...impossible to get any decent Mexican food. read more

I was torn between giving the place a 3 or 4 star review......the burritos we ordered to go were tasty, a generous serving of fall apart tender beef in a red sauce and chunks of potato. Seemed really fresh, but coulda used more spice, and I'm positive I ordered two chicken burritos, not beef! It's a really convenient location on the main drag, with off street parking. I will return, this time to dine in, and make sure I get exactly what I ordered. Since I live 20 minutes away, had I or my wife really not liked beef, I would have been mad at this error. I was a bit disappointed as so many said this place had the best "real" Mexican food. I guess I don't know what they mean because the food they serve although good and filling, is pretty average fare. The soup/stew is fantastic, but the rest is pretty much what you'd expect. We didn't receive the best service, but I think that was because they seemed very under staffed for the time of day. The prices are good but I'd rather pay a bit more, receive very good service, and eat far more adventurous faire at Sí Casa Flores. read more
