It was fine. The food was fine... except the chips- they're soggy. The drinks were fine- had the horchata aguas frescas. The service was fine. It's a small joint with limited seating, so it's a bit sterile in the atmosphere department, but it's fine. It is nice they have vegan queso (and regular) and farm eggs. Ingredients are all fresh, they just don't pop.

Ordered from LunchDrop at my job and the order was supposed to arrive between 12:00 and 12:30, and it arrived late at 12:50. I'm glad I checked the burrito before biting in, because not only was it late, but the only two items I selected to be excluded were on the burrito. I mean, it's written right there on the bag? They aren't easily removable like tomato on a burger either, so I wasn't able to eat the burrito. I like to use LunchDrop to try new places that I can also enjoy on my time off work, but I will not be going to El Chilito. If this experience was any indication, my order will take forever and be incorrect.

First time visiting this place. The food was very tasty! I ordered the puffy taco thinking it was something else but it was still good. A lot of dough though. Service was accurate and fast. Ambiance was nice. Wide open space indoors with outdoor seating as well. Very clean. No noise concerns. Definitely a place to come back and visit again.

To all my fellow vegans and meatless eaters, all you need to know is the Brentwood from El Chilito. Get it in burrito or taco form (which can be made with a corn, wheat, or puffy shell) and enjoy a fresh medley of sauteed spinach, mushrooms, potatoes, avocado, and pico de gallo. No need to omit or replace anything, which is a lovely thing. The chips (fried in house) and charred salsa are also quite lovely if you want something snacky to go with the meal. I tend to order delivery because I'm lazy AF these days, but even then, service is crazy fast and always comes in hot. It's a foolproof choice when in need.

Carne Asada Taco with fresh jalapeños

I want to be transparent, my companion ordered food from here after a night of debauchery, so this review is based upon the 'morning after' taste buds. We ordered an amalgamation of things to include a variety of tacos, chips, salsa, black beans, etc. However, I specifically ordered (for me only) the carne asada taco and chips and salsa. Carne Asada taco I added fresh jalapeños to give my entree a little AM pick me up. Unfortunately, the jalapeños could not save the dried-out meat nor could the slathering of charred tomato salsa a top the taco. Perhaps this was an 'off-day' for this spot or maybe it was just me? However, dried-out meat is something I can't look past.

This establishment is better than their one closer to downtown. Let's reviewwww shall we Pros- great outdoor seating, they have nice party looking lights that come on as the sun goes down. The food! I always get the puffy taco and it's ALWAYS Delicious. Cons- they can't help it but with outdoor seating comes pesky bugs right?! They do have a small indoor seating area as well

Went in for a plant based burrito or taco and was sad to find out that the one I had originally wanted had been taken off the menu, however!! The super friendly staff helped me to pick another option, which I really enjoyed. The burritos are huge and super affordable! What I enjoyed about the one I tried was how vegetable heavy (and tasty) it was, coupled with beans and rice. Hoping they bring back the plant based queso, but until they do I'll be coming back for good vibes and guacamole. Good music with really wonderful outside seating, lined with big trees and string lights. Super cool vegan friendly spot!

    No salsas!!! (Cries in bland)

I ordered 3 tacos, 1 burrito, and 4 salsas (which aren't free btw) I got ZERO salsa which kinda ruins the vibe you know :/ Besides that horrible disappointment the tacos were freaking amazing! That puffy taco...ooh baby! The burrito I saved for dinner. My air fryer took it back to its original goodness! (Could've used some salsa...)

Ask the Community - El Chilito

Is there anything in the menu without pico de gallo, cilantro, onions? I'm allergic to these items. I would love to try the place, but what's going on here? Are you able to order a plain taco here? No extra stuff?

I would skip this place because they did not follow my special instructions and random things showed up in my breakfast tacos. To me, that means there is not adequate training or management of the staff preparing the food.

And don't come expecting cheese or sour cream -- the only add‑ons here are cilantro, onions, salsa, and guacamole. It's a stripped‑down menu, and they stick to it. The tacos are solid. The beef isn't anything remarkable, but the chicken is tender, moist, and genuinely flavorful. The quesadilla is the sleeper hit; the baked cheese gives it a deep, savory punch that outshines the tacos. And if you're hungry or just want the best value, the burritos are enormous -- stuffed right up to the tortilla's structural limit. A hidden little alley spot that delivers quick service, simple options, and reliably good food once you manage to find the door.

Sixth Street's neon and noise are basically next door, the Capitol sits up the hill, and the whole area is packed with people, bars, and that classic Austin mix of polished downtown hustle and late-night chaos. Velvet Taco is pure counter-service: you walk right up, order at the register, and then grab a seat. There's plenty of seating, so even with a couple of kids in tow it was no problem finding a spot. The place leans hard into what can only be called white-people tacos--soft, sad flour tortillas that taste like they came straight out of a grocery-store package, loaded with every wild creation the kitchen can invent. Global mashups, brunch hybrids, burger impostors, the works. No one is pretending these are the real deal. I went for the chicken-and-waffles taco, which was actually built on a thin, real waffle instead of a tortilla. Surprisingly good--crispy, a little sweet, chicken holding its own. The burger taco tasted exactly like a cheeseburger that had wandered into a tortilla and decided to stay. We also tried the shrimp taco (fine), one daughter got the kids' chicken taco (perfectly kid-level), and the other ordered the chicken tikka (spicy, saucy, and very much in the "why is this on a tortilla?" category). Everything was okay. Comparable to Torchy's in that same creative-American-taco lane. If you're looking for a true Mexican taco, stay far away. But if you just want to play around with some decent flavors on a cheap flour store-bought tortilla while sitting in the middle of downtown Austin, this is your spot. Not my favorite. The steak taco had too much fat in it. If I was strictly bashing this review on the food. I'd give it a three. It's not worth the price. Well, that other spot was CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS! Seeing my situation, I saw it as opportunity to try the options at Veracruz --- including the famous from Food Network, migas taco. I ordered 4 tacos: the migas, migas poblano, shrimp macha (!!), and the Dona Reyna tacos. All of these specific tacos were priced between $6 and $6.75 per taco, not bad in Austin, and not bad considering the quality of said tacos. As you can see from my order, I opted on the more "novel" choices and they did not disappoint; that said, I do HIGHLY recommend the two variations of the migas taco and the shrimp macha taco. Oh, the shrimp macha was so FIRE, the flavors were bold and smoky with a kiss of heat. The migas tacos were FULLY LOADED, and the scramble with the tortilla chips were flavorul. TIP: They will ask corn or flour --- do flour. Everything is handmade, but those corn tortillas fall apart with all the sauce. Flour = durable and flavorful.
