Options for all eaters: omnivores, vegetarians, vegans; and appetites: snackers, brunchers. I have come for just chips and refried beans and a full-sized burrito. Both were more than enough food for one person. The Manor location was by far my favorite, because they have a large covered seating area and easily accessible bathroom. Decent food. Maybe it deserves four stars. They forgot a taco on my order. They don't clean the tables often enough, is is a tad unpleasant. Food: not as spicy as I'd like. Get anything red. It'll be more strongly flavored and a bit spicier. Cascabel was very nice. The tomatillo pork was okay. The tinga was good. The puffy taco is lack luster because it gets so soggy so immediately that it just isn't worth it. Coming from San Antonio and knowing Henry's Puffy Tacos, I demand better. The chipotle soup was pretty darn good, but not amazing. The Aguas frescas were probably the best things on the menu. Pineapple cucumber was great. Watermelon was like home. Here the deal, because this is a mixed review, right. It's good food. It's the kind of stuff you *would* find in Mexico, but not at a taco shop. It's a high end version of stuff they'd do in a Mexican grocery like LA Michoacána. And for me, that's a big deal and I like it. This is a weekly destination that we've been to 50+ times and it's always been good to me and my friends. I've had like one meal I didn't think was worth the dough. Keep in mind that seating is outdoors so hot days are going to be hot meals. Pros: * Remarkably consistent food, especially in the breakfast taco realm * Salads are very good Cons * Not much in the way of variation or specials * Have to check your food as there are occasional mistakes (corn instead of flour, black beans instead of refried) * Mixed experiences with drinks and coffee (some are great, some just ok) Be aware that the adjacent intersection is a bit of a clusterf--k. Maybe it's just when I'm here but a fair percentage I come here there's some honking and dodging of cars. The window cashier at El Cholito on Manor and Chestnut, a white female with shoulder length blonde hair, very unfriendly/unpleasant attitude, is acting way too cool to work the window. Felt like I was majorly inconveniencing her in placing an order, no hello, no nothing but a yeah, what do you want and sign the receipt attitude. She'd probably be a better fit for working out at the Del Valle correctional facility but her too cool attitude wouldn't mesh with that either. This place is terrible!! I have been going to this location for a long time. I had problems at the Manor location a month ago and the District Manger was really nice and sent me a $20 gift card. So today I thought I would give this place another shot. I called in and placed my order and spoke to Finely. I told her I wanted 3 build your tacos.. she replied asking what I wanted in them. I told her the following order 1-retried bean, cheese and bacon 1-Picadillo, cheese and avocado 1- carne asada, cheese and potato They are $3.50 for each taco and she charged me $16. I told her that didn't sound right. She goes you order the carne asada with extra ingredients. I said NO I ordered 3 build your own tacos. I don't understand how people can't listen to what you ordered. This is the 2nd time they have messed up my order and over charged me. It seems like a manager needs to be on staff to make sure they get orders correct!! I also don't like it that Finely tried to tell me what I ordered. When I know exactly what I told her. So, my wife wanted to go to the Selena themed brunch. And there is a whole party going on, but I don't think is worth it. The price of the food is super high, and as a Mexican, I don't really think is worth it. I tried the barbacoa taco, fish taco, and carne asada taco. I have eaten tacos on a regular base and carne asada tacos doesn't go with cilantro and onions, that would be pastor. We have been coming for a very long time and you decided to change your menu and double your prices on things. I had to stop by for myself today because the word was going around town on social media, about how you raised your prices so high. Don't forget you are still a TACO STAND!!!!!! It frustrates me to see that two of my favorite places and go to places are owned by the same person and now getting ready to open the place where the burger stand was on manor. I am sure that those prices are going to be crazy as well. Breakfast tacos are amazing things. They are so simple and so tasty. I constantly ask myself why we can't conquer this delight in NOLA but it is the thing I look forward to the most on my trips to Austin. El Chilito has been a savior on several occasions. I can get exactly what I want, the Cherrywood (eggs, bacon, potato, avocado..yum!), and a cup of coffee in like 5 minutes. I can enjoy my simple breakfast with some delightful salsa in the sunlight outside at a picnic table while discussing Austin plans with my compatriots. It's not fancy but it is fast, friendly, and priced pretty well. I will continue to make El Chilito part of my Austin experiences. read more

The bamboo leaves rustle in the wind and grass grows greener in the short shadow of a crouching cat. Walking up Cherrywood, my Charlie's Special and small coffee wait at El Chilito. If I get three roasted salsas instead of two, I'll know that the girl in the window has noticed my overgrown beard and approves. I sit at a picnic bench and peck with the pigeons; my laptop pulled open, poetry tap-tap-tapping. I hear my name and I see the brown bag sitting on the ledge, lonely. Nobody reaches for it, except me. I peel back foil and admire boiled potato. My mouth waters for serrano and munches chorizo. If there is a finer breakfast taco, I do not know it. Was in Austin for 4 days and the friend we stayed with didn't tell us about El Chilito until day 3... WHAT! We ate here for breakfast that day and the next. Really friendly staff and incredible food. I can only speak for the breakfast tacos but it's not hard to imagine all the other food being equally righteous. Coffee is great too, I had cold brew iced one day, really great, and a double O (mexican hot chocolate with espresso) the next, never had anything like it. The two start summary captures exactly how I feel. "Meh. I've experienced better." This town is full of great taquerias and this just isn't one of them. Its not that its bad. Its just unspecial. The tortillas don't taste homemade. The barbacoa didn't have a lime with it and wasn't offered. They have one hot sauce included in the tacos and its neither a regular tomato salsa, red nor green sauce, but some kind of brown stuff, which was mediocre. I probably would have been on the fence about 2 or 3 stars, but they are charging 5 star prices for 3 star tacos (at best). And their pricing structure is nonsensical. A three item custom taco, which can include bacon, egg, and cheese, is $3, but the Gringo taco, which has the exact same ingredients, is $3.50? That's just weird. Why mark up the prices on a popular type of taco? And if you are that expensive, the ingredients should be something other than plain, regular ingredients like eggs, bacon, cheese. If there was nothing else in the area, I'd probably go back. But as the weakest, most expensive option in the area? Yeah no. read more
