El Fenix is a great stop for vegetarians wanting Mexican food. I absolutely loved their chips. They were fresh and delicious. We had gotten their vegetarian quesadilla and enchiladas and they were both good. The waiters were attentive and helpful. We had gone during Mother's Day and it was busy. I only give them a 1, because there is no zero. there are 18 of us in numerous groups waiting to be seated, and half of the restaurant is empty. The hostess is walking around looking at everyone, but not really doing anything. The servers aren't busy, and no one is being seated. I got cheese enchiladas with sour cream sauce and my gf got combo nachos. Nacho meat cold/luke warm, enchiladas were the soggiest biggest piece of mush thrown together microwaved crap I've ever had. We spent $61!!!!!!!!! WTF! Granted, you take the $20 in margs off, it's $41. I wouldn't order this in an elementary cafeteria. Service was very poor as well. If you plan on going, don't. My wife and I just stopped in...Burleson TX location. We were greeted by hostess and asked how many, we said two, and she responded that there was a 10-15 minute wait. There was virtually no one in the restaurant. I look right and see two guys at the bar and say we will just sit in the bar. She responded that there is STILL a 10-15 minute wait. She was so rude and offered no explanation...if she had been nice and explained we would have been happy to wait. OK yes I admit it...I come here (often) mostly for the margaritas. I think they are the best around. The mix is not overly sweet...it has a lot of lime and it has the perfect bite. I have never been disappointed with them! On to the food...it's pretty good. Chips and salsa are good. (Wish there was cilantro but I know not everyone is a fan) and the queso and guacamole are decent starters. It is kind of strange to order this at a Mexican restaurant but my favorite thing is their Chicken sandwich. The load it up with cheese, Guac and bacon and serve it with a side of their (great) fries. Beware, though...the last 2 times I ordered this they left off the bacon so I had to ask for it. Really, really good, though and they quickly brought out a side of bacon to add on. (I really didn't need it but man was it good!). I can't even review the food - didn't even get a chance to eat it... was seated with my husband and two kids. Wasn't busy at all, most of the seating was empty except two or three other tables. No menus, was told they would bring them right out to us. 10 minutes later, no menu. 20 minutes later, no water, still no menu. Stopped a waiter and asked them if he could help us, was told "You're not my table, let me get your waiter" 30 minutes later, no water, no menu and never saw whoever our waiter was supposed to be. Husband asked the hostess for a manager - 40 minutes later no manager - we got up and walked out. We're pretty patient people, especially since my husband is a chef, we understand that things happen that are out of wait-staff's control. 40 minutes without any service other than being seated though...that's bad business. A-OK standard north Texas style Tex-Mex. I'm from central Texas and I'm pretty picky on Tex-Mex. However, El Fenix does a couple of things really well. First, I love the individual bowls of salsa brought to the table. Second, their beef tamales are comparable to anyplace. Combine this with their above average chili gravy and you have a great option for when the weather gets cooler. Their lemon icebox pie is surprisingly good as well. If I had two suggestions for improvement, they would be to cut down on the garnish and to fully describe things on the menu. I gave it star because the waiter was great. We are new to the Burleson are and decided to to try El Fenix since it is owned by the same group that owns Snuffers and Meso Maya. I had seen the locations before because t never stopped thinking it was just an El Chico knock, off but since learning it was owned by the same group that owns Meso Maya I thought I would give it a try. I should have known better when there was duct tape covering a rip on the seat in the booth. We were totally disappointed with El Fenix. Chips were not fresh and definitely not cooked on site. Salsa was mediocre. My wife ordered Pollo a la Parilla which was over salted and dry and I ordered the beef Chile Relleno that I was only able to handle a few bites of it. It was the worst chile relleno I have had in over 50 years of life. Both meals seemed to be reheated. This is not real Tex-Mex. read more

Ok, I have to admit I'm a long timer. I probably like El Fenix because of its history more than the food. It's more of a comfort thing to me. The other reviews are a little harsh I think. The salsa recipe probably came along in the 50's when it was considered exotic, so it wasn't built for today's chile heads that expect a sinus clearing salsa. The food is more like Tex-Mex comfort food. It's not haute cuisine. More importantly to me, it's always been fresh and served fast.
