Gross. The interior and exterior of the building are nice but the food was awful. I ordered the fajita enchiladas with steak and it was terrible. No flavor whatsoever and the tortilla tasted like cardboard. The salsa that they brought out was SUPER watered down so it just tasted like water, tomatoes and a tiny bit of garlic. An insult to salsa really. We ordered queso as an appetizer...don't do it. I don't know what it's made of but its NOT cheese. Tasted like the queso you get out of jars at the grocery store. I absolutely love the chips and salsa at El Fenix. I was craving Mexican food so I drove over to the Mesquite location and was seated right away. I did, however, have to wait about 10 minutes before a server eventually came over to take my order. I was a bit put off by this since I had other places to be, but the older woman who waited on me was friendly and gave great service so no complaints. I veered off my customary fare and opted for a puffy taco and chicken enchilada and they were both good. My pops and my guy both love El Fenix. So I wind up eating here often. The food is pretty good. Not as great as the downtown location but nothing is ever bad. Service seems to be hit or miss, nothing as egregious as I'll never come back but it's the little things that start to add up some times. Last time was our waitress' first shift for Wednesday night special and the placed was slammed! She totally lost her shit in the middle of service and had a breakdown. I felt really bad for her but I also think you don't start a waitress on your worst night. The manager eventually stepped in and helped but it was a rough night. Today it took several asks just for silverware. It was busy but not slammed. Several other things were overlooked. No plates to go with the guacamole. But I do enjoy a nice meal with family or friends at places they enjoy. It won't be my first pick but we'll be back. If only service was a little bit better. read more

I called on Wednesday to make reservations for 15 of us for Friday night @ 5pm. The process couldn't have been easier. Apparently, El Fenix understands the importance of reservations and the possibility of making good money ( unlike you Razzoos!!). So, I get to the restaurant at around 4:45 pm on Friday. Our table is not ready BUT the staff makes sure to tell us that and keep us updated. I think the table was ready around 5:05. We get to our table and our server, Edgar, arrives and introduces himself. He then take our drink orders. A gentleman comes by with chips for the table. The overall dining experience was fantastic, for the most part. The area we sat at was nice, the chairs were cushioned and not hard. Their chips and salsa are the best around. Our waiter Edgar was nice, attentive and was there to offer suggestions if we needed them. The fail about this dining experience was my food. I ordered the chicken fajitas. I seriously doubt that they used a whole chicken breast for the meal, in fact, I would say it looked like half a chicken breast. This is inexcusable for a meal that is almost 13 bucks!! The meat was not only sparse but thin as well. I was very disappointed with this dish. I did like the beans and rice that accompanied the fajitas but still not worth the money. read more

I am not a fan. I've been multiple times, and every time I leave quite a bit of food on the table- not even worth a to-go box. The enchaladas are mushy and gross, and their salsa is blah. The chips are consistantly stale and in need of salt, and they taste re-fried. The salads aren't good, and the drinks are weak. We always enjoyed going here for years but tonite didn't go so well. It started when they brought the chips which were stale. We asked for another bowl figuring maybe it would be better but they were just as stale. Next a waiter spilled his tray of drinks all over the back of my wife as he walked by. I had to flag the manager over and he apologized and actually comped our meal. The food arrived and it tasted very bland and also like it had been cooked several days before and reheated. I had the beef fajitas and I couldn't finish them because they were so rubbery with no flavor. While this was going on, a family was moved from their booth to another table due to a large water bug. Was in the area and asked Siri to find us a place to eat. This place came up. Wow, it was awful. Nothing is made in the kitchen. Has to be all Sysco. Taco meat was nasty, Queso had no good flavor. Guac was alright, but they shove so much lettuce in you can't enjoy the entire bowl. Meat sauce was not tasty. Chips were good. My family used to eat at El Fenix at the Galleria in Houston that closed in 1992. I guess Houston doesn't have a sophisticated enough palette to realize that it was the best Mexican food in town. The most horrible and disgusting experience dining out ever! Not one, but two huge roaches came out next to our table. I was there with about 20 other people in our party and all of us were disgusted! The first one was killed by one of the ladies at our table and the other our waiter killed and said "callate (shut up)" under his breathe as we all screamed. A women manager came over to apologize, but never offered any solutions. I could not eat after all this and was still charged. What?! Another manager gave some of us $10 gift cards, but that is not any consolation for being in an obvious filthy situation. I swear the employees at the Mesquite El Fenix location have a problem understanding plain English. This is the second time I have had food delivered and the order was messed up. It is also the last. I know why they don't offer Sour Cream and Beef enchilada's on their menu. Because they SUCK! How in the Hell do you get an order for Sour Cream Chicken enchilada's and they come to the customer with beef inside? It's a simple thing really. You read the order and you put chicken in the tortilla. There you have it. I could understand getting Chile con Carne and Chile con Queso mixed up but you can't tell the difference between ground beef and chicken? Unacceptable! They also put two single sides of rice and beans instead of the family size. Are the 4 of us supposed to split a cup of rice and beans? "Here son, have a couple of ounces of rice and beans with your crappy Sour Cream and Beef enchilada's!" Unbelievable!
