I've liked this place for decades, mostly because of their abundance of choices, the quality, and the price point. You definitely get more bang for your buck. You secure your items yourself, take them to the counter on the provided platter, they bag everything, you pay, and you're out the door in no time flat. Everyone including customers seem very friendly, with the customers excited to be selecting their goodies. Always a pleasant atmosphere. Very free flowing compared to similar places. They did run into concerns with the ICE raids unfortunately, but came back stronger, determined to not let the situation decide their fate. Definitely a local business worth exploring and supporting. Every time I walk in the employees so kindly let me know what bread is the freshest or what's about to be put out! It is self serving, you grab a tray and tongs and grab as much bread as you'd like. The store is warm and cozy. Building is just old enough to give a nostalgia feeling. They accept cash, card & Zelle. I grew up in the area but stopped in last night for the first time. I will never be able to buy pan dulce anywhere else now. Everything was so fresh, and the crispy items were crispy, even right before closing. I will definitely go back closer to opening time to see what it tastes like at the beginning of the day. We were in town recently and, since it was the weekend before Dia de los Muertos, we decided to do a pan de muerto crawl. We randomly stopped in to this little bakery after driving by, and they had just brought out their big, freshly baked loaves. The scent was amazing and we took two back with us for the drive home to SF. One sesame and one sugar dusted. They were very good and I wouldn't hesitate to come back if I was in the area. I've been going to this panadería since I was a kid - 40 yrs later I live just up the street from it and the quality is always great. Service is friendly and you are always greeted with a smile. My favourite is their bolillo - it's the best in town no matter what time of the day you go; it is always crispy and soft - a true magic trick. They also sell other treats: tamales, tortas and tacos. Haven't tried those yet but def on the list. There's also a carnitas guy that sells chorizo freshly made and of course, carnitas. Those items are fabulous. Their pan de muerto is fantastic when in season and their calabaza (pumpkin) empanadas is the best in town as well. There bread is so special you won't be dissatisfied here. Today I got early this morning it was busy only a couple for people getting daily bread ( birotes are the fresh out of the oven. I pick up a big box of Pan Duce from us all. & a $2. of fresh Birotes 1 dollar for 3 each. My buddy Pancho V. told me some time ago that LA FAMA Panaderia has some of the best: Conchas and Pan Dulces in Los Angeles. I knew I had to check it out. While am no expert on conchas, I have had my share and never really found one I liked. They were either too dry or the sugar topping tasted off. Let's say, I prefer other types of pan dulces not conchas. Let me tell you, the sweet breads here are excellent compared to the ones I tried in the past. And am a fan of the conchas now. What's different about these conchas? I am not sure, but as an amateur home baker my guess is that they perhaps use a "water roux" to make their conchas soft and pillow-y. Whatever their secret is it works! The tamales here on the other hand, no bueno. Stick to the pan dulces and bread rolls. Customer service is welcoming. I came into this place feeling pretty ravenous for some good old fashioned bread and was greeted by the warm and delicious smell of sweet, baked goods. What I really liked was also that the place was very clean, and everything was very accessible, and the variety was amazing. I grabbed a little bit of everything, but unfortunately, some stuff fell off my plate, I felt so ashamed, but the patron was such a sweetheart, that I couldn't help, but ask for her to include a tip on the tab, which she sweetly declined, but I tipped anyway. This place is excellent at customer service and all around was a good experience, their bread was delicious, and I should be embarrassed to say that I ate all seven pieces that I bought in the next two days, but really life is too short. I went around noon and there was still a good selection unlike other places that run out and don't make more. Isn't it funny how you can live in a neighborhood for years and take for granted the local shops that surround you? You don't really appreciate these one of a kind shops until you are away from them. I lived in East L.A for years and never really appreciated La Fama until I moved away. I know many of us love the nearby El Gallo Bakery for those famous Thanksgiving dinner rolls but I am here to show some love for La Fama. Tiny little bakery it is but the birotes and pan dulce are superb and reasonably priced. The birotes are my favorite and a great buy at 3 for $1.00. I purchased two dozen birotes hot out of the oven for a breakfast spread we were having at work. Everyone loved the birotes and we loaded them with chicken tinga and later in the day with ham and cheese. The super soft goodness inside is a guilty pleasure and I can eat these birotes as they are or load them with frijoles de la hoya and queso fresco. Yum! If you can pay cash to avoid paying the 4% surcharge. Enjoy your visit! read more
