    Tacos: $1.50 each
    Paul V.

My quest for a favorite taco spot in South Los Angeles is seemingly as endless as the options, so on a Thursday night I opted to visit two different stands within a few blocks of one another to compare and contrast in a heads up review: El Cihualteco vs. El Grullense Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? You've got two different setups here with El Cihualteco being a small taco shop and El Grullense a more typical taco truck. The folks at both were exceptionally nice, with a leg up to El Cihualteco for accepting credit cards and a nod of the cap to El Grullense for having my tacos out in literally under a minute. Stars all around. El Cihualteco - Star (1) El Grullense - Star (1) Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Interestingly enough, while El Cihualteco is an actual brick and mortar shop and El Grullense is a truck, the tacos at El Cihualteco were actually slightly less expensive at $1.45 each (with tax) compared to El Grullense's $1.50 each. Either way, both were still well under the reasonable price point. Stars all around. El Cihualteco - Star (2) El Grullense - Star (2) Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? So it's here that our two contenders deviated, with El Cihualteco running away with the competition across the board. The tortillas at both shops were good, but that's essentially where the comparisons stopped. The meats at El Cihualteco were moist and flavorful, whereas those at El Grullense tasted rather generic and bland. While I liked that El Grullense gave me the option of either spicy or mild salsa, El Cihualteco put both in the bag without even asking, and both were absolutely sensational. El Cihualteco - Two Stars (4) El Grullense - No Stars (2) Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? At the end of the day I wouldn't say either of these shops are better than some of my favorites in the area (notably Tire Shop Taqueria), but if you're stuck between the two, El Cihualteco is the way to go. El Cihualteco - No Star (4) El Grullense - No Star (2)

First, cash only. If you got plastic keep moving. This place is quintessential south la hole in the wall joint. No one speaks English and food is cheap. Solo Carne burrito with cheese, pastor taco, and a jarritos for $10.25. I was disappointed with the pastor taco because it really reminded me of beef jerkey which is great out of a bag, but not in a taco. The burrito definitely did made it up as it the Asada was flavorful, delicious, and had a slight kick. Lemons and carrots on the place are a nice touch. Overall not bad and tasted pretty good.

I love this place. I've been coming here for years. My girlfriend and I use to ditch school just to drive over here and eat. Definitely worth the drive. It's delicious. Be careful with the red sauce it's very spicy.

    Delicious!!

I had 2 chicken tacos 10/10! Really good quality and the tortillas I think were homemade! Service was great as well and clean inside.

I have been coming here for years. I would really recommend their asada burrito with no rice and no beans. Of course with extra red sauce.

Now when you pull up originally you might think, "am I in the right place" but once you park and get into the courtyard, it is LOVELY! Amazing ambience! There is a bocce set up, string lights. It is a little slice of oasis in the middle of the fashion district. The restaurant itself - beautiful. I couldn't ask for more. Absolutely perfect in my book. Beautiful plants hanging, perfect Spanish music in the background (any place playing Natalia LaFourcade is a win). The drinks were great! I had the jungle bird which was fun. Food was so good too. The whipped beans are the star! We had the guacamole which was tasty, great tostadas with it. The arepas were good but the pork belly was a little too fatty (I know pork belly is always fatty) to the point the fat muted the flavored for the arepa a bit, but still delicious. The empanadas were great and as someone who lived in South America and ate empanadas every day, these really took me back to my Paraguay days. The squash blossoms were light and perfectly fried. Unfortunately my friends had gone to Funke the night before so they were comparing the squash blossoms and Funke won out, but they still liked Dama's! Small plates were enough for the 3 of us. The service was quick and attentive. Parking was easy for us. I will definitely be back!

The staff are lovely humans who really seem to care about their customers. We have some faves on the menu. The bean dip is fabulous and I'm addicted to the baby gem salad. They have recently amped up the filling in the delicious crispy squash blossoms and I love the acidity and heat. The fish is also a hit in my books. One dish that doesn't work for me is the lamb chops, which is a shame since it's my favorite protein. I've ordered them multiple times with clear instructions on temperature and have found them overcooked and tough. The beef tostada was just ok. Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. The vibe in the place is welcoming and the restaurant is nicely appointed. We will continue to be regulars and it's really worth trying if you haven't been yet.

In a lovely walkable neighborhood. You can walk up to the Greek or Uber 10 minutes up the hill. Super friendly staff. Variety of patrons: girls having a meetup, families, coworkers, friends of all ages. We felt so comfortable and it was money well spent. One complaint: do something about your bathrooms. Great experiences don't end with gross bathrooms.

I have had to walk over to get answers to my questions and I'm usually met with attitude. Bummer because I really wanted this place to be a Los Feliz gem and it's just not.

Hollenbeck was good but I definitely enjoyed the Okie burrito more, I ordered the "original" size once and didn't seem to learn my lesson the second time, these burritos can feed two in Original size. They offer a "Mini" version which would be satisfactory for one person. My favorite thing about these burritos is how "home-made" they are, the salsas and meats are fresh and taste like they came out of an abuelitas kitchen. I still need to try the crunchy tacos and nachos which look great, I recommend trying this classic establishment at least once if you're in the area.
