Menu of El Grullense food truck is simple with inexpensive choices

Covid-19 has made think about what's important in life. And tacos. Mmmm ... tacos. Yes, it is To--Tal--Ly ... "important" ... to find terrific tiny tacos for a $1.50 from the El Grullense taco truck by the Shell gas station at 78th & St. Johns ... cause they aren't JUST tacos. They're tasty 'thentic tacos! Of course, it's 5 stars. Plus El Grullense has lengua ... and I love lengua (beef tongue) prepared to tender perfection. Mmmm ... lengua tacos. The menu is simple: $1.50 Tacos $6.00 Regular Burrito $7.00 Super Burrito $9.00 Meat-only Burrito $6.00 Tortas $6.00 Quesadillas $4.00 Tostadas $3.00 Sopes Choose your carne (meat): * Al Pastor (grilled pork) * Asada (grilled beef) * Cabeza (beef head) * Carnitas (braised pork) * Lengua (beef tongue) * Pollo (chicken) * Tripas (chitterlings) Coronavirus may have impacted our boldness and flexibility, but it will never succeed in compromising my affection for cheap tacos from 5-star food trucks at gas stations like El Grullense.

Top left cabeza, top right lengua, bottom al pastor.

I had to steal a little chicken from my son's burrito just to see. It was really nice, juicy and tender. I got tacos, a lengua, cabeza and al pastor. I don't normally like lengua but it's one of those things like menudo that I promised my mama I would keep trying. I'm glad I did because it wasn't just good, it was the best. Like, I want more. I'm finally a convert. Sometimes cabeza is a little gamey for me, but theirs is lovely, its tender and melty soft and meaty and delicious. The sauce on both of those tacos was pretty mild. I was able to take bites of pickled jalapeno and carrot in between and not wish a passing fire truck could hose me down. The al pastor is great, tender and flavorful and nicely crisped up. But omg the salsa legit had me crying even without pickled jalapeno or carrot. Next time I'll ask them to leave the salsa off and get a side so I can go a little easier with it. It was still so delicious I ate every bite of them because its really amazing al pastor. Their onion is kind of chunky, I didn't detect any cilantro, and there were no radishes, just for future reference (other reviews mention them) but I don't really care. They are nice touches but if you can't nail the tortillas and meat, the rest doesn't matter. Speaking of tortillas, theirs are very good. I don't think they make them on site, but I'd bet they get them someplace local and they are tender, hold together just well enough and taste fresh. Little carts in Mexico rarely make their own either, they buy good ones from a good local supplier. So don't let the sour grapes from some other Yelper from California fool you, their tortillas are perfect just as they are. All in all I'll be back. Maybe with a bigger stomach because now I need two of the lengua and cabeza too. So delicious.

They are constantly busy and running around! Doesn't matter what time of day we go in there are several tables which is good business for them. Restrooms are always very clean. They just updated their booth seating and their table seats. Lots of decor and great music. They also have a TV so today we were able to catch some of the World Cup! Their chips and salsa are wonderful. Some of our favorite we've ever had in the Portland area. We have tried a variety of plates there and never had a bad one. Ground beef is always well seasoned. The shredded chicken is not dry and can have a little kick sometimes. Their rice is really really really good. Tableside guacamole you can't go wrong. My wife loves the shrimp tacos. Everything is so fresh. They have a great drink selection and some happy hour options. Margarita is great but also just a cold beer is perfect as well

The service here was slow but friendly and the food was delicious. I also ordered a horchata, which came in a huge grenade-looking container. Very casual ambiance, good place to grab happy hour. You can sit, have a beer and watch a sports game at the bar. During warmer months they have a patio. Highly recommend giving them a try!

The correct way to make quesabirria you deep fry corn tortillas with meat and cheese the way quesabirria is supposed to be made You used a thick Gordita Tortilla prepared it yesterday shoved it into a cooler then microwave them next business day. Spanish speaking staff. Warm chips and good salsa. Decent rice and beans. The not so good: taco shells were not made on site, seem to be from a package. The margarita was not tasty, the mix was off and the house tequila was not so good. I could only finish half of it. Being my first time, I asked for her recommendation from the hostess on what to order? Instead of rising to the occasion, she immediately said I don't eat meat then proceeded to tell me about all the high dollar meat items. lol I could not take her recommendation to heart. I went with a somewhat safe bet of two crunchy tacos. The rice and beans were decent. The shells were crispy but flavorless. The salsa and chips were decent. The chips were warm. I finished the two tacos half the margarita and left. Would I go back here again? Probably not, with so many places to eat in this area, but I had to give it a shot. I overheard the table next to me complaining about their fajitas. The gentleman said "this is just Chuck steak" and I had to laugh out loud before I left. Disclaimer. I live in San Diego and judge Mexican food for its face value. I was not impressed. But maybe be i was there on an off night?
