I am not exactly sure what the name of the meal was, but it was like a stewed chicken with maybe tomato Bay sauce, black beans, and rice. It was flavorful very affordable and fresh. This place is really amazing and delicious. I wish I would've taken pictures of the plates we ordered. We had the chicken mole, and scrambled eggs with cactus, chicken enchiladas with red sauce, one chicken huarache with mole, and a tlacoyo filled with fava bean (my choice of filling). The last two were made with blue corn masa. It's nearly impossible to find restaurants that make tlacoyos and huaraches, let alone mole-- all staples of Mexico City cooking. Everything was delicious, fresh, and piping hot. The chicken mole, enchiladas, and scrambled eggs, came with rice and black beans (our choice of beans). I'm definitely coming back. The service is prompt and friendly, and the inside of the restaurant is warm and clean, decorated with azteca/maya paintings. They will have their 25th anniversary celebration on May 23 at 2 PM, and I'll definitely be there to celebrate with them and enjoy more of their delicious food. I found out about this app called TooGoodToGo via an IG foodie in Texas I follow. I decided to download the app and see what was available in my area. The app allows you to reserve surprise for bags for a discounted price. However, with it being a surprise you don't know what you're going to get and it's usually food the restaurant doesn't want to waste. So, pickup times tend to be close to closing. Today I decided to try my luck for a second time with a different restaurant than the first. My son and I both prayed we would not get Chile Rellenos. Regretfully, it's exactly what we got. Another person posted a photo of the same exact meal utilizing the same app. The app was named under their meal. I'm convinced that this is the "go to" meal when using the TooGoodToGo app. The rice was ok, the beans were good, the Chile Rellenos left much to be desired. The Chile Rellenos gave me a headache and left an after taste in my mouth. My son's stomach was upset and it left an after taste in his mouth as well. Needless to say, we are apprehensive about giving this place another try, let alone pay full price for the menu offerings. The ambiance of the restaurant was very casual. Not too busy. Service was friendly and fast. We were greeted immediately upon entry. The food was ready in less than ten minutes and that's a stretch, which leads me to believe everything was premade and warmed up for pickup. No utensils were provided or offered. Honestly, I wish I had tried this place sooner! If you dont feel like reading further, I feel you won't be disappointed. The food was delicious and just had that flavor to the food. The food really stood out comparing it to what you'd get from a taqueria or something in the area. I ordered the Huarache Con Mole but I switched the meat to lengua instead of chicken and I have to say that the mole was sooo good. Im a fan of mole and I personally rank this one top 3 (not including the homemade ones I've tried). Both their mild and hot salsas were both pretty good; not drop went to waste with some tortilla chips. I had the eponymous huarache azteca and thought it was pretty solid. I enjoyed the addition of nopales to the dish as well. Though I think I prefer sopes to huaraches since you can get three and try several meats instead of being locked into one. I'd def come back and try some more of their other stuff. When I was in Oaxaca a few years ago, I had the tastiest spicy pork huarache in a non-descript eatery right off the main plaza. It was the only time when a corn tortilla surpassed my general preference for flour ones, and the ingredients were so good that I think I had about four and didn't know how to say "Pepto-Bismol" in Spanish afterward. I'm so happy I found El Huarache Azteca thanks once again to that show that fluctuates between obnoxious and useful , "Check Please! Bay Area". The food is damn tasty here. Yep, you heard me. And it reminds me of that place in Oaxaca because the corn tortillas here are just incredibly moist and flavorful - best I've had in the Bay Area. Finding the place is another issue entirely. It's in the less-than-desirable part of Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhood right on International Blvd. The name of that street always promises more than it can deliver. Anyway, it looks like El Huarache Azteca has three locations - two side-by-side and a more tropical-looking spot right across the street. I'm not sure why, but I hope that means it's doing well. The interior of the biggest place is wide-open with the walls covered with sepia-toned murals of Cortez conquering the Aztecs (see my photo). The menu is full of all sorts of goodies, including more familiar items like tortas and quesadillas. However, their specialties include huaraches which they describe as "thick corn tortillas shaped like a sandal". I'm not sure I would care for a food item compared to footwear, but I decided to go for the big guns and ordered the $11 Alambres Regular - which has four huaraches covered with chopped beef steak, Mexican chorizo and bacon bits with bell peppers, onions, fresh avocado slices, and Oaxacan cheese (see my photo). That was really hearty, spicy and just damn tasty - and the homemade corn tortillas really make the difference. Oh, I'll be back, probably in daylight since I don't want to worry as much about my car next time. I have to mention the super-friendly owner and terrific waitstaff there - who patiently heard my Oaxaca story without looking at their watches. I was excited after getting the chips and salsa. The salsa verde was tangy and fresh and the roja had a nice smokiness to it. Looking around I was only one of 2 non-latinos eating, which I took as a good sign. I eagerly ordered up 2 huaraches, the chicken mole and costilla (thin slice of bone in beef rib meat). It was all downhill from there . . . The mole sauce was pretty bland and the chicken a bit dry and tough. The thick corn tortilla was good, but the highlight was the Oaxacan cheese. The costilla was tastier, but again the bed of sauce underneath it did not add any flavor or complement the meat very well. This one must have had a thinner tortilla because it was disintegrating as I cut it up to eat it. Maybe it was a bad day? Though taking a look around the room, it appeared that me and the white guy were the only ones eating huaraches . . . dios mio! Thanks to the suggestion from my top yelper Jose O. I tried El Huarache Azteca and I loved it! Barbacoa 1lb of slow cooked goodness includes the following for garnishing your tacos: cilantro, onion, and lemon all served with handmade tortillas. The best and most known beneficial to cure any hangover was the "consume" broth from the barbacoa unfortunately I have not tried these theory yet; some scientific research is to be completed before I give you a go on that meanwhile enjoy it it's quite delicious. Strawberry water is really good and refreshing. If you are leaning for an adult beverage they make a pretty good size michelada. read more

Been here a couple of times now and find the food good, its very home-style cooking and while you have the traditional items like enchiladas and such, they specialize on its namesake dish huarache's, a corn base sandal looking slab topped with whatever you want. The salsa they bring to the table are very good, they add a touch of cinnamon to their coffee but the chips they bring out are straight from Costco and no flavor, wish they made their own. We tried: #3 Barbacoa plate $10.50-smoked lamb plate w/ rice, beans & catus. Includes 1 order of handmade tortillas. I liked the catus and the handmade tortillas. The meat tasted a bit strange to me and I usually like lamb, B. liked it. huarache w/ chicken tinga-the huarache is lighly fried and covered w/ chicken and cheese. It was pretty good. huitlacoche quesadillas-black corn mushroom. Didn't have much taste but it was ok. B. said the chips & salsa were really good. Horchata was just ok-sweet and a bit gritty. They had live musicians when we went, and it was Loud inside the restaurant. Total with tip & tax $30. They have both a women and men bathroom. I've been to el Huarache Azteca for many years. Food has been delicious since I was there for the first time. Specifically the famous barbacoa!Service is great maybe not the best but all the employees are attentive and cordial. My family and I used to come here all the time, we came here a few weeks ago and had 1) such a bad service - they only had a total of four tables and it took them so long to bring out our food, my sister inquired about how much longer the food would take and the lady snapped at her! This was my first time and I love, love this place. I knew I had made a good choice when the chips and salsa came and the red salsa was pretty spicy! I ordered the barbacoa (one of the specials they only make on the weekends). Lamb with rice, beans, and a little salad with nopales. The lamb was super tender and delicious - so glad I decided to try it. I'd come back here just for that dish. Also, they have house-made tortillas that are the hella good. My friend ordered the pozole verde and a huarache. The pozole needed a bit more kick (you usually add seasoning yourself to it anyway). The huarache was super yummy as well - they have a ton of different kinds which is helpful if you don't eat meat/only eat certain meats. The prices were on the chiller side, as well. Service was really friendly and sweet. Food didn't take long either (I feel like this is something I will always notice!). This place has been around for a while and I never really took the time to try them. After being on yelp and looking at the yummy food I decided to give this place a try. I ordered their pambazo and 2 quesadillas one of chicken Tinga and one of chicharrón. The pambazo was really good it has chorizo and potatoes with lettuce and queso fresco then add some salsa roja OMG delish! The quesadilla de Tinga was better tasting than the chicharrón but still good. Their prices are reasonable and when ordering for pick up takes about 15 min for order to be ready! read more

This restaurant is one of the most traditional and artfully decorated establishments on all of International Boulevard. Every one of their walls from the dining area to the restrooms is decorated with some type of art piece; either murals, sculptures, or a combination of both. Their menu is reasonably priced for the portion size and is fairly diverse. I've tried their tacos and their chilaquiles and feel that the Chorizo meat for the tacos is the best option, as it prepared with a slightly crispy texture and is not too greasy. The chilaquiles were excellent , they had a nice crunch and the green salsa on top paired well with the egg, cheese, and beans. If you dine here, be sure to save room for dessert, their cooler is stocked with quite a few kinds of sweets and their flan is top notch. I like the cosistency of the flan, it is not watery like some others and isn't overly sweet. I don't really understand the purpose of the single walnut on top, I understand if the flan had the walnuts spread throughout it, but the single one doesn't add character or flavor. read more

First time eating here and was really disappointed by the quality of food. The Gordita was not well filled with meat, just mostly cilantro and onion. The quesadilla did not hold in tact, chicken was hard to chew, and was completely not what I expected from a quesadilla. The chicharron tacos tasted like straight oil, it looked like it would be saucy but it was just the oil and fat from what it was cooking in.
