We came in for lunch on a Saturday and were seated right away. It seemed like a typical Americanized Mexican/Tex Mex place. The service was good overall. We just got margaritas on the rocks. They were pretty basic, tasted pre-mixed. - Carne asada burrito (3.5/5): good portion size, large burrito covered in queso. Needed salsa, it was good with the guacamole and sour cream. The family and I went to El ldolo this past weekend in Bartlett.. It's one of our spots that we all like to dine at. And it never fails us! The service is always on point the alcohol beverages are great they don't skimp on the alcohol and the food is always delicious. This time. I tried the flaming shrimp which comes with the refried beans and the rice It was on point. It was cooked to perfection. I dined here with about a dozen friends for a reunion of sorts on a Friday night and they have a huge patio that accommodated us perfectly. I ordered a watermelon margarita on the rocks, rather than frozen because the machine was down. Yet frozen Daquan's were available. Anyway, I ate way too much of the chips, salsa, and queso because I only could eat a very small portion of my main entree. I got the Hawaiian fajitas. It tasted good, but didn't look the best. One of my friends ordered the shrimp fajitas and it looked a lot tastier with red & green peppers. Mine looked like a brown mush since it was cheese and pineapples. We added a side of queso to the complimentary chips and salsa. The queso was creamy and tasty with just a hint of seasoning. The salsa, however, was a bit too mild for me. The chips were crispy and sturdy enough to hold the salsa and queso. I ordered the fajita quesadilla with chicken. The chicken was on the drier side, but the generous helping of onions, peppers and melty cheese made for an overall delicious quesadilla. The sides of rice and beans were okay. The rice was dry and the refried beans were similar in taste to what I would buy at the grocery store. I would have preferred to have just had another half of the quesadilla. The service was good but a bit slow at times. Granted, we were dining on Christmas Eve so we were just thankful to find a restaurant that was open. I liked the ambiance inside. Overall, I was satisfied with my meal. It won't necessarily be my first choice for Mexican food in Bartlett, but it's great to have another option. read more

Service was A1 very attentive. Food not so much. We went here on a Friday morning me, my son and lady. Waiter was super friendly to my son (1.5yrs) and attentive. Always checked in at appropriate times and ensured refills and all were completed. Large portion plates. Comfortable seating and quiet atmosphere. She ordered the quesadilla - large servings. She didn't know how to eat it. She said it was a little bland. The tortilla was super crispy and just crumbled when cutting it. I had the mixed fajitas - now I've had fajitas all Over Memphis and none have been paper thin cuts. These looked like a pile of que-tips on my plate. The chicken was dry and over cooked and no flavor and the steak strips were rubbery and again no flavor. The rice and beans tasted like they were re-heated. Beans were paste and rice had a little flavor. I am not sure who gave this a "authentic Mexican" approval but food was no where near great. Hubby and I were really impressed by this place. My roommate got the mushroom quesadilla and noted that it tasted different than at our usual Mexican restaurant. They use a different seasoning here or something. He said it was a nice change. Hubby and I split the Pollo Fundido because we were in the area to see a movie and couldn't take any leftovers with us. It was enough to fill us both up and was good enough I could have eaten the entire thing by myself. The chicken was grilled perfectly and was delightfully juicy. We also split the Guacamole and hubby said it was served Mexican-style, which is where you don't smoosh the avocados all together but rather leave them chopped up. It was very good but hubby said needed salt. I didn't feel the need to add any until I got about half way through it but I'm not a big salt person. My wife, kids, and I have become regulars at El Idolo over the last couple years. You know there's something magical about a place when the 6 of us find comfort in sitting around the table and sharing some delicious queso fundido after a long week of work and school. There has never been an evening when suggesting El Idolo is met with a millisecond of hesitation. There's nothing magical about the chips, dips, soups, entrees, or kids menu. We keep going back because we are treated like family and genuinely enjoy ourselves each time. Sometimes what makes for a great success is not the fact that your molcajete and margaritas are better than everywhere else. Rather, it's whether your kids will beg you to go back simply because they enjoyed being there last time and all the times before. I will say, though, after extensive "research" I'm a big fan of the molcajete and margarita. Just be sure you go with someone who likes to share. read more

Get the El Idolo burrito and you will thank me. It has all the meats roll in to one mucho granda burrito. I had to go back 3 times to see if that were consistent. The answer is yes. The mango margarita will have you watching your steps after you finish a find meal( I'm scared to get top shelf since it's located in Barttlet TN you should wait at least an hour before you leave). This is my husband's favorite Mexican restaurant. It looks very nice inside and it is casual. My husband loves the fact that the portions are huge and it is really inexpensive. The lunch menu offers a ton of food at a low price. Now me, It's ok, not bad, but to be honest, the food is a bit boring to me and the food lacks a bit of the quality that some other restaurants offer even though they may be a bit more expensive. I am more about quality than portion size but it's perfect if you want to go to a clean restaurant with good service and want to be stuffed and take out leftovers and you're on a strict budget. I had the garlic fish fillets, which were good (a TON of garlic). Came on a bed of delicious creamy rice that was topped with fresh chopped lettuce and ripe tomatoes and then the fish. This is my favorite Mexican place ever so far. By that, I mean your typical American-Mexican fare spot. This place is hands down better than any "Mexican" food hole in the wall in Memphis metro. I love Americanized Mexican grub. I love traditional Mexican food too. They're different, but they are both absolutely delicious in my book. Tex-mex is some abomination that needs to be stopped. But this is Americanized Mexican just to be clear. It's just simply delicious here. Everything I have had. I imagine anything on their menu is great. The steak is flavorful and not dry, overcooked, or tough in the least like most Mexican joints. The cheese dip is spot on. The guacamole is perfectly seasoned (simple is best.) The chips are the perfect vessels for all the above and their addictive salsa. I long for this food. I wish I had my own personal El Idolo next door. I would never get tired of it. read more

I was in the Bartlett area for professional development and we all decided that we wanted some Mexican food. Well this place was the closest and we opted to try it out. As we entered we were seated quickly and given water and chips. Which was great, however I will admit that without salsa their chips were bland. Although I thought their salsa was pretty good. We then all ordered from the lunch menu which was pretty cheap by the way. I ordered the burritos special which came with a chicken burrito, lettecue, tomatoes, sour cream, rice and beans. Food came quickly and was made fresh. It tasted pretty good too. I will definitely be back to this restaurant if I am ever in the area again. Yes! 20 reviews and 5 stars! This is so delicious! This restaurant is what was once pig n whistle. Same building just without all the smoke and filth. The bathroom was clean and chips were at my table before I sat down. My friend Anna came to eat with me. She didn't order anything though because she brought a brown bag lunch to work. She ate a peanut butter jelly sandwich and potato chips. And a pickle. Anna likes pickles. She had a lot of fun coloring while I ate. She even said how good my food looked. Back to the food though, the menu is great. I especially like the lunch deal where you get rice and beans and can choose1,2,or 3 items. I had mine with Chile rellano and tamale. They also have a Christian section on the menu. Something about Jesus and Maria, so thats good. The Chile pepper was just the right amount of heat and stuffed with meat. The tamale was covered in chili. The beans were very creamy I guess and somehow the best I've ever had. I normally eat just a couple bites of beans but I finished all these with my chips.
