Had a vegetarian chimichanga delivered. When it arrived it was still hot and delicious.

I was shocked when I saw the reviews this place got. It's probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in St. Louis. My family is obsessed with this place so I used to go here all the time when I lived in the Lou. My favorite thing here are the shrimp chimichangas. Huge, greasy, tons of plump, juicy shrimp and smothered in a delicious creamy sauce. As some people said, the beans and rice are a little bland, but do you really go to a Mexican restaurant just for the beans and rice? Sure, it might not be the most "authentic", but the food is delicious none the less. I say, ignore the reviews, check it out and draw your own conclusion. read more

Love this place. Great chips, salsa, and queso. Very casual. Highly recommend the quesadilla fajita.

Exterior: 1-2 stars (sadly). That said, I'm giving it 4 stars, because I don't want the stars to be a deterrent. The food is much better than I had expected. Great Mexican food. We go here all the time and you will find the staff very friendly. Try the chicken soup when the weather gets cooler!

Wait staff was slow and it wasn't a busy night. The waitress couldn't understand the drink order and we just ended up taking what we got. The food we got wasn't what we ordered either and when the manager was asked if it could be fixed he argued loudly with us going to get a menu and telling us we couldn't read. Bottom line food was good when we finally got it, margaritas were good but customer service is really bad. Probably won't be going back. read more

I started going to this restaurant a couple years ago and the food and drinks were awesome. At this point I have tried most of the meals but I would recommend getting the Jalisco special, the Durango special, or the 3 mini chimichangas. Pretty much anything with their cheese is really good. Their margaritas are huge and I recommend someone else driving home when you drink one. When you get the initial chips and salsa, I do recommend getting a side of the cheese sauce with it. You do pay for it but it is worth it. The service use to be really good but lately it seems like they had a change in management and the staff seems to be short handed. Also, the size of sodas have gotten smaller and the salsa is hit or miss. I still recommend giving this place a chance especially if hacienda is full. I do feel the food is better here then at the hacienda. read more

I was just at El Indio for lunch today and will never go back. I had a fajita dish that was advertised as covered with cheese. Well it was covered with cheese, however, the cheese was watered down and tasteless. I could not eat it. On top of that, when I mentioned to several staff that I could not eat it and it did not taste good, not one of them apologized or even asked me if I wanted something different. They gave me my bill and sent me on my way. What great customer service!! WOW, I never want to come back again. The service was terrible. Also their food was terrible and absolutely horrendous. I ordered the steak and shrimp meal, the shrimp was really salty and the steak was really old. I bet the chefs probably left the beef in the freezer without wrapping it. They gave me another piece of steak and it was really hard to chew. Also we asked for some ranch dressing and they never even came back. Also we had to go to the front desk to pay the bill. At least they charged us half the price for the steak. I was very unsatisfied. read more

Came in last night for a margarita and $1 taco, and was asked to give a second form of identification, in addition to my brand new valid non expired Missouri license. I am 22 years old. They believed that my hard license was not real and they were not going to serve me unless I had another form of identification, which already threw me off guard given I had just gotten that ID and that I am 100% of age. Luckily I had just gotten a new license so I had my paper one in the car so I was able to be served, but was treated with such disrespect by my waiter and other waiters at the restaurant. I was treated as if I was some sort of liar and was not given proper service after the Id swapping. I was treated differently for absolutely zero reason. My waiter refused to come to my table to serve me, even food so I had to get his attention many times. When he handed me my drink he practically threw it on the table and would not even look at me. When I got my bill I left the amount that was due plus 20%, which was more than enough considering the way I was treated at this restaurant, and was stopped so that one of the other waiters (that wasn't even my waiter) could count my money before I left because he obviously thought I would not leave enough. I've loved el Indio for many years and my family has been coming for 10+ years, but I can say I will never go back again. Unfortunately the waiters had to ruin my love for this family run restaurant by making me feel completely uncomfortable and treating me as if I had done something extremely wrong when I was just coming in to enjoy with my friends. Our favorite restaurant for years! We've sent friends as well and never a bad review! Staff are a little cranky at times but the food is always awesome. Authentic Mexican with authentic prices. Aside from the strange tabletops the decor is homey as well, and you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The green enchiladas are top notch, and they will put fresh avocado on anything for you. We eat here at least once every week. read more

Not a fancy Mexican restaurant, but always good food. The chips and salsa are good, the queso cheese dip is fantastic, the margaritas are not very strong, but still good. El Indio serves fine food. It's fine. It's cheap. But I've never craved it the way I've craved other Mexican restaurants.

Came here with six friends, drinks were great(a little expensive), food was very good mexican with some tex mex as well. The only complaint is the lack of seating for a group that size- there was only 1 six person table- but the service was still fine. read more

Another Friday night favorite of ours! Yummy complimentary chips and salsa. I know salsa is made in house b/c the heat varies from time to time. But it's always good IMO. We also love the queso and the house "smooth' guacamole. My son and I ALWAYs get the "special" Tacos Al Pastor. They come 3 to a plate and are very good and authentic to Mexican street tacos.(marinated pork with onions and cilantro) I usually make it a platter w/rice and beans added (extra cost). I also recommend the Steak Arrandas, chopped season steak tacos with queso...so good. Hubs likes the mini chimichangas. And if you have room...try the desert sopapilla...OMG, a fried tortilla drizzled with chocolate, honey and cinnamon served warm and topped with vanilla ice cream and whip cream....Every thing is fresh, quick and very reasonably priced.
