Pretty stellar taco spot to visit when you're in Sayulita. They have street seating only, during the day before 4pm it's about five tables and after then it opens up to about nine tables. The waiters and busser are stellar, just the nicest guys. And if you go up and see the chef she will smile at you and show you what she is making. The inside of the spot has a grouping of grills and griddles where many different meats and veggies are cooking at any time. Fresh tortillas are on the griddle and salsas are prepping while the meat is grilling. They have restrooms upstairs, you have to ask and they are clean. The sink is a shared one and you have the turn the handle more than you think to get water. Guacamole and chips are hella tasty. you'll get two wood platters with salsas, grilled and fresh onion and lime for the table to start. We ordered all the meat tacos and the zanahoria ones also. Like all the meats. The tacos came out all together and we dove in. The carnitas were delicious, moist and crispy at the same time and full of flavor. The ribeye was tender and balanced and a chewy delight. The Milanesa table were absolutely perfect, chewy and soft with a pillowy tortilla. The zanahoria have a spicy touch from the chipotle and we're surprisingly tasty. Overall everything we had was delicious. They are really popular and are moving soon to a bigger place. This place is a foodies delight! The food is so yummy and the tacos are grilled to order. We shared a table with a couple of sisters who just got in from California, it was the first time there for one of the sisters and you can tell she was skeptical of her sisters ravings on the place. The hubs was in the same boat, but after waiting for what felt like a LONG hot time the food arrived and it was as good as I remembered from when they first opened in 2011. We ordered two ribeye steak tacos and a shrimp Itacate. For those who don't know, an Itacate is perfect if you love cheese and are gluten and carb free. It's literally grilled cheese that is used as a tortilla and stuffed with whatever you like. I opted for a healthier option with grilled onions, peppers and shrimp. The tacos are HUGE with tons of flavorful meat straight from the grill. On the table they place 2 wooden boats that contain all the condiments and salsas for your tacos. We loved the foil packets of grilled onions and white beans. Did I mention how cheap everything was. Two entrees and a beer came out to $230 pesos or $14 USD. read more

First of all the portions here are HUGE so order lightly and then get more if you need it. We had the Papas with chicken milanesa (basically a giant bowl of cubed potatoes mixed with cream cheese and bacon, piled with chicken milanesa, and topped with a giant piece of fried cheese), smoked marlin taco, an alhambra with steak, and a tuna taco. Everything was delicious and a huge value. The margaritas were just okay and felt overpriced compared to others we've had around town. Waited in line for the over hyped El Iticate last night to have some cold, mediocre rib eye carne asada tacos. The beans were flat out horrible as well. Yes they have a cool cheese wrapped burrito but, do yourself a favor and eat at Yeikame next door instead. Yeikame was incredible- see my review on Yelp or Instagram of Yeikame. This place gets rave reviews so they must be doing something right, however this is not our favorite. The staff is friendly and the menu is easy to understand but the food lacked for us. We thought maybe we didn't order the right things, it is know for their steak so maybe stick to the steak options. The good: the itacate- this was actually good 5/5 we ordered the cheese grilled burrito with suadero which is their namesake it was the best thing on the menu, highly reccomend. Ny steak taco 4/5 the meat was great, cooked well, the tortilla leaves something to be desired The bad: The salsas 2/5 there was no spicy salsa option, in a town like Sayulita where there are multiple spicy salsas at other restaurants it seems such an oversight to not have one. The guacasalsa is good but the other two are both roasted with very little heat. The mahi-mahi taco, 0-5 came drenched in a red sauce and was not good at all, we didn't eat it. The carnitas taco 2/5, chewy chunks of cartilage with very little flavor meat, no crispy bits at all, on a sad tortilla, and with no salsa to save it, an complete fail. I hate giving a bad review but I would not eat here again. The staff are great and speak English for those who need it, they accept cash only, and it might be worth a try for the Itacate because that was really a crazy thing to eat, but other than that I would skip this option and head into town for something better. read more

Second time here and was happy to see that it has remained open since COVID. These Itacate cheese burritos are amazing. Last time the seafood one came with fish and shrimp, this time it was shrimp. Stopped here for lunch not realizing what a treat we were in for! Between the 4 of us (hubby, 2 teenage boys, and myself) we ordered 6 tacos and an itacate de res, and we left there stuffed. So much so that my husband and I (1 taco each and shared the itacate) didn't even need dinner that night! The itacate was a new thing for us, and it while it was delicious, I'm glad we shared it because it was so rich I don't think I could have eaten an entire one on my own. We walked by this place and saw the cheese sizzing from the counter. We knew we wanted to go there, but didn't know what it was called after we walked by. Staff speak English and can interpret the menu. The options are simple and include mostly tacos and their specialty - itacate. The itacate is like a burrito but is wrapped in fried cheese rather than a grain-based tortilla. The beef and shrimp are the most popular options. Carnitas and the peppers with cheese were my favorites. The carnitas were out of this world, the best carnitas I have ever had. The pork was succulent and slightly salty. I remember my first trip to Sayulita, I heard over and over again, go to the taco place with the orange tables and get the Arrachera tacos... That place was El Itacate and it has become a staple for us on our visits to Sayulita. We, of course, love the Arracherra tacos (flank steak) but they do often sell out if you don't get there early enough. There are also tons of other incredible things on the menu. I can't remember what the name of it was but there was a stuffed backed potato taco that was really delicious. You'll have plenty of entertainment from street performers due to the location, which can be fun but be aware as they will definitely come around asking for money as most street performers do. The cherry on top at El Itacate is that the staff is awesome and even put up with some crazy antics from those who may have had too much to drink with a smile and a laugh. read more

I read a lot of good reviews for this place online so we gave it a shot. We walked up at about 8:10pm on a Saturday and it was busy. I had put my name on the list and was told to come back in about 20 mins. We came back at about 8:45 and still had to wait about 10 mins - I am not complaining, just be aware that this place is popular and there might be a wait. To make things better, there was a pedestrian fire show by some locals that walk around after for some donations - very entertaining and perfect timing. We also got to see the kitchen in action, super super cool, the food looked great, and smelled even better! We sat upstairs had the queso and nachos as an appetizer. Do i love cheese? Yes. Do i love fried foods? Yes. Do i love nachos? Yes. Was it good? Yes. Was it anything special? No. It was not great, it was not bad...just that it was not worth waiting for. Would I personally get this again? Yes. Next up the rib eye tacos. The meat smelled amazing as the server brought it up and it was perfectly cooked to medium/medium rare. Decided to try out a new spot in sayulita as I'd already eaten at my favorite place next door a couple times in a 24 hr span. That said, El Itacate was a great option and full of delicious tacos, salsas and service. A group of us decided to let our server order for the table so we could have a large sampling of everything. Seriously, I think we ordered everything on the menu! My favorite was the burrito where the tortilla/wrapper was made from fried cheese! Ha e you ever heard of such a thing?!
