I give the chips 5 stars, the warm salsa 3 stars, and the food 2 stars. I ordered chicken enchiladas and they were mediocre. It seems like they use canned red sauce and has no flavor. The service was rushed but I get it, it was during the lunch rush and it was busy. The woman taking the order was not patient for my slow order, but it was my first time here, so I didn't know what they offered. Geez! Waited for the check that took forever. Went to pay and the same woman with no patient and no humor helped me again. Ugh! What's up with this town...? The ambience seemed very rushed. Don't go during the lunch rush. My wife had some huevos rancheros with green Chile and that was a major winner too. I was born and raised in Las Cruces so I've been eating here since I was a little kid. I want to Nopalitos for the first time and was definitely not happy. I ordered two burritos. They were plain burritos no flavor. The price for two burritos was higher than normal. Especially because they were bean and cheese and Chile relleno. Poor customer service. Waited 30 minutes for 2 burritos. They supposedly gave my burritos to some else. This is my favorite Mexican spot every time I head back home. Now living in CA I crave it, and can't wait to head here the first chance I get across NM state lines. For the beginning of this review, I will be channeling my 12 year old because this is his favorite Mexican restaurant. He likes it because: 1. It doesn't take very long for the food to get to your table. The servers are very nice. 2. The food is really good, and it's impossible to not eat it all up. His favorite is the ground beef burrito. 3. It's extremely cheap and a good value. Taking the mike back from him, my take on Nopalito's is that it's a pleasant place for a quick lunch or dinner. The inside of the restaurant looks like a diner from the Mad Men era but it is clean, so that's OK. There are weird paintings on the walls like something from the Mexican school of Velvet Elvis Art. The best thing about Nopalito's food is the salsa. They bring out a little pot of heated green chile salsa. It is so good that I always just eat it with a fork. No chips, just salsa on a fork. The menu is pretty limited, but what they do, they do pretty well. read more

When I plan a visit to my hometown of Las Cruces, the first place I always make a point of visiting is Nopalito's. I have frequented this restaurant for over 2 decades. We love it so much I've brought friends from Los Angeles here and made my husband from Texas a huge fan as well. The food has always been incredible and I DREAM of their green chile salsa in my sleep. This most recent trip when I visited during my high school reunion was the biggest disappointment for me. Looked at the menu and realized the prices had gone up a bit. Not surprising considering demand, so not a big deal. But then to my amazement I found out that the first itty bitty bowl of salsa is on the house, yet any additional bowl is about $2. What?! I've always figured that chips and salsa are included in any Mexican restaurant, so to find out my favorite salsa was now being charged broke my heart. I feel like this change is going to upset many Nopalito customers like myself. Almost makes me not want to make a visit anymore when I make a trip home. read more

I really like the food and I enjoy going there with my family. The only problem is their posted hours don't line up with the actual service hours. Today we went to go eat at 7:00 PM because it said online that the restaurant was open until 8:30PM. (They also had a sign outside that said open as well.) Took forever to get anything we asked the waiter for, especially the check at the end. He spent most of his time talking to the cooks in the.kitchen. Nice interesting space. It's a converted church. It's very home like and the server are great extremely attentive. It was our waitress's first day and so it was a fun meal. Love the heated green chili. Did I say I loved it. I ordered the chili relleno plate and it was best I have had in Las cruces but not the best I have ever had. This was my third visit here. It always has been wonderful. Had a big group for a bday breakfast. Our server, Michelle, was always a step ahead of what we needed and the food was wonderful! I first went to the Nopalito on Mesquite street the week it opened. I left town after I graduated from college, but would try to get my Mexican food fix there every time I returned. When my dad moved to Good Samaritan several years ago, we were pleased to find the Nopalito on Missouri. it has become our go-to restaurant when we came to town. I was in town last week for a funeral, and was able to eat breakfast there before heading down to El Paso to fly out. My wife and I both had Huevos Rancheros, me red and her green. They were as good as I remembered. I especially like that they have meat in them. When the waitress found out we were flying back to Seattle, she packed a pint container of their green salsa to go. My husband and I have been going to this restaurant for more than 30 years. Over the years we've had good and bad service, which is to be expected, however the food was always good... until last night. It took three times longer than usual to receive our order, and when we did it was dried out. It was not busy, not a single order left the kitchen while we were waiting, and there was no easily discernible reason for the delay. We sent the food back, and it was obvious that the kitchen staff removed the enchiladas from my plate, put new beans and rice on another plate and placed the original dried out enchiladas on top of the new beans and rice. One incident like this in 30 years is not a reason to quit the place, but I will be paying attention to time and food quality on my next few visits. read more
