I went in to get a grilled chicken burrito and the person scraped the chicken out of the bottom of the container that ended up tasting like it had been under the heat lamps all night. The first time we came here, the service was pretty awful. The waitress was nice but she neglected to take our order and follow through. We were finally served our dishes and she was very apologetic that the kitchen got my order wrong. And she didn't provide napkins or flatware. The enchiladas are sweet, not spicy. The pozole was watery, but they did do a good job of limiting the meat, which I requested. The second time we visited was at 5 pm on a Saturday and the place was packed. We found 2 seats at the bar and ordered right away. The mango shrimp tacos are a favorite of my companion, though they are just sweet to me, and could use some heat. I ordered the Barbacoa and at the second bite encountered a huge piece (like literally 2" long by 1.5" wide) of gristle. The bartender offered to replace, and did remove the taco from the check. El Jefe is modern inside with a simple outside seating. I heard from a very reliable source a couple of weeks ago that their menu is worth checking out. Especially one thing that I am fond of: Menudo! It's confirmed. Their menudo is the best around within my driving limit for food. And I have none:) it's loaded with meat instead of lots of hominy. The best! It comes in a medium bowl and the smell is pretty strong which to me signals a dish made by someone who loves it like me. This is a go-to breakfast burrito stop for me! Great food and very consistent. Since staffing changed recently, they have taken a hit. It turned this 5 star breakfast burrito place to a 1 star real quick. I sat on hold for 6 minutes where the employee never muted me and I could hear her helping 5 groups of guests and taking an Uber eats order while I patiently waited. I understand the restaurant industry is taking a hit right now but she then picked up the phone and hung up on me. I called back and she asked to put me on hold and I said yes but you did just accidentally hang up on me. She proceeded to yell that she is only one person before slamming the phone down to "put me on hold again". I then waited another 24+ minutes before finally giving up. It's one thing to be busy and another thing to avoid the phone. If she was too busy, she should have not answered. We live across the street and could have walked there in less than 5 minutes Again, great food but it DOES NOT make up for the shit service. read more

Our family loves this place! I have written a goid review for them in the past, but I feel the need to write another one today. During this COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home order we made a promise to only have takeout from local businesses, and are very happy to support El Jefe. The breakfast burritos are wonderful! Huge pieces of smokey bacon, and the green chili is amazing! This is the only breakfast place we eat from, I swear it is my husband's second home when I work at the offce. Used to have pretty good breakfast burritos but I can't speak for anything else on the menu. Lately however they seem dry and mostly potatoes. We were still getting them anyway on a weekly basis because they're an easy go to but lately the counter person has been absolutely horrible. The old girl was always polite and professional to us but this new one needs a lesson in manners! No matter how many people are waiting her FaceTime phone calls with friends always take priority. She yammers away with them the whole time she's "working." Very unprofessional and rude not to mention how much it slows things down. I wonder if she would still have a job if her boss knew how she conducts herself in his business. Maybe we'll try again in a few months and they'll have new staff and better burritos again. Food poisoning. Took both of us down, painfully. Chicken burritos. Two days after nearby Arvada West High let out... leftover meat or sauce too old or improperly stored? The only other food we ate for more than 12 hrs before/after were known good bagels and cream cheese. Calling health department. Be warned! ---------------------------------- Update 6/11/19: Jefferson County Health Department inspected this location of El Jefe Taco's and Burrito's on 6/5/19 and found five violations. The most serious is that employees were observed handling raw meat then touching tortillas to assemble food without either changing their gloves or washing their hands. Ewww! My illness was likely caused by cross-contamination from raw food onto prepared food. El Jefe staff also failed to properly cool freshly cooked green chili, which can turn it into a bacterial swamp. There were three more minor violations. I want to like this place, as it's close to home, and it's a taco dive! How can you not like a local neighborhood taco joint, well... This place has a little tiny bit of hope, but needs to really look at the quality of what they are making? I have ordered carry out from here on three occasions now, twice for tacos and once for a burrito and a solo taco. The tacos is where they have a chance to get it right, but they need to make sure all their ingredients are fresh and the meats need to be moist and hot. I ordered a burrito and a taco to go. The burrito was shredded beef with beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese, etc. Tough to screw up right, not! The beef was old, which is how all their meats seem to be for me. The beans are what wrecked the burrito for me, as it was like bean soup, and they put so much in. There is no way you could eat it with your hands, as it was a tortilla in bean soup with some old beef and old produce in it. It was also very bland, no flavor. Don't be thrown off by the randomness of the decor. A quick observation reveals the remnants of the previous establishment, likely a yogurt joint. There still lingers the nonfunctional multi-dispensing yogurt machines opposite the entrance, and I'm assuming the current establishment still utilizes the colorful high stools that surround 4 or 5 tables. The randomness of the decor continues with old school arcade machines. But when you consider the fact that there is a middle/high school down the street, it kinda makes sense, but then again, do the kids today even know how to operate such old school games. Aside from the decor, the food is awesome! I came in to order street tacos at $2 each (cilantro and onions) but they did not have any onions!! So I had to settle for regular tacos (lettuce, cheese tomatoes). I ordered 4 carne asada and 4 chicken tacos. All were super delicious. The bf and I would definitely order from here again! Took my first trip here based on yelp reviews. We have been struggled to find new decent mex place in Arvada and have vowed to try some new ones. Definitely a bit of hole in the wall feel. We really enjoyed our food, us parents and the kids really liked it too. I tried my first torta (mex sandwich) and loved it. I probably should have set my expectations lower for a Mexican restaurant in the Arvada suburbs, definitely not the top of my list for tacos.dislocation seems like it used to be a frozen yogurt shop or something like that, which is kind of strange. The service was decent, but de carnitas were very fatty, any carne asada didn't have much in the way of flavor. The toddler did however, eat almost all of his beans and rice, so that's a positive.
