We love El Loro. We are in the area often so this is usually our go to place to grab lunch or dinner. We go so much that some of the staff knows our orders, lol. Regulars. It's rarely busy when we go but every now and then it gets packed. They almost always seat everyone on the bar side of the restaurant. I have tried multiple things on the menu over the years, but I would say my go to is the burrito ruleta & a cup of horchata. The food is always good and fulfilling! The staff are always nice and very attentive. There's an extra charge for using credit cards so it's best to pay with cash if you have it. read more

The menu has a wide variety of options and good lunch deals, but I was not impressed by the lunch special (2 chicken enchiladas with rice and mole sauce). The mole was not good at all and had too much chocolate while the rice was bland and crunchy. I would have liked to receive beans and rice with the meat. I did appreciate the friendly staff ready to greet us and being served the chips, salsa, and other dip quickly. The second dip was almost like sour cream with some sort of spicy seasoning. It didn't look like it had been dipped recently and instead was sitting in the fridge in the serving dish. I give them three stars for the friendly staff and decent prices, but the restaurant did not seem clean and we had to wait a while to get our bill. read more

Located in a former Wendy's building, this is a hidden gem in Burnsville. The access is not convenient depending on which directions from which you are approaching. Solid three stars here. I kind of believe that places like this are a dime a dozen and a standout place is pretty atypical. Therefore, little touches and quality of service define them. Came in with a party of four others and were seated almost immediately. I ordered a horchata (no refills) and the "El Gavilan", which is steak, chicken, and chorizo mixed with grilled onions and bell pepper, topped with cheese sauce. Basically a poor mans fajitas. I omitted the peppers from my order and chose corn tortillas. The portion was pretty generous I thought and the meat had nice flavor to it. The refried beans (you can also choose black) were pretty creamy and I thought they were some of the better beans I've had. The tortillas were terrible. They came out wrapped in foil but were cold and tasted like they were cheaply made. Be careful if you ask for extras. I didn't...but a side of sour cream is $2.50... Service is very friendly. Various staff members came by and made sure people had enough of their beverage and refilled the chips happily. I'm not this far east very often....I'll try another one of their locations for comparison's sake. read more

Ate here last night and it was an extremely disappointing experience. The cheese dip we ordered was watered down. They have Chilaquiles was basically nachos with cheese and meat. The fajitas had no flavor or seasoning and tasted like they were cooked from frozen. The salsa is so bland they had to give us bottled versions you can get at the grocery store. I'm a little bummed with our experience from El Loro, but after reading a few of the reviews I think I could've saved myself from some disappointment. We've been meaning to try El Loro for a while now but just haven't gotten around to it. For Yelp's National Night In we decided this was the perfect opportunity so we ordered quite the spread of food, paid a little higher price than we probably normally would've with the delivery and tip and waited anxiously. Delivery after placing our order was rather quick, somehow though half of our food was already cold which was a little disappointing. I ordered all beef for my three different meat options, as other reviews have said the beef was not cooked well and in my opinion could've used some seasoning. However, I did opt for the cheese sauce which helped save my meal a bit. I had thought about going with chicken but switched my mind last minute, don't do what I did, go with the chicken! My fiance loved his food however, so a three star experience from us for now. read more

Been here quite a bit. But, this was the first time on a Thursday night. I'm not sure if it's a regular occurence just on this night, but the live mariachi band is a nice touch. The food here is decent and about what you'd expect from a chain Mexican restaurant. The service is *usually* good but I've had a couple slow, unattentive waitstaff in the past. I would also advise against anything with shredded beef unless you prefer it to be very charred and tough. I like to order the el loro especial (tamale with two flautas and guacamole salad) or the chilaquiles when I go here. read more

Great place, been there several time when visiting for work. I actually drive down from Bloomington it's so good - much better than the Mall of America local fare. They have a couple great dishes with tons of chorizo sausage, including nachos and a cheese dip - love that. While the salsa you get with chips when seated isn't spicy, they have two bottles of my fav habanero sauces - red and green - on the table, which are plenty hot (use with caution) which I use to spice up the salsa and other dishes. Generous portions of very good food on hot plates, free ice tea refills (not on all drinks) and very good service make this one of my favs in the area. A couple times it was slow to get my check and pay it, but otherwise service is great. You can't go wrong at this El Loro. read more

Mexican Ranch This wasn't my pick but I'm willing to go with the flow. The chips were plentiful and included what they called Mexican Ranch - it tasted and looked like tartar sauce sans relish. I diverted from my standard tostada to try some cheesy goodness with their ranchera quesadilla. Perhaps I've been tainted by kids quesadillas where you take a tortilla and put stuff on half then fold it over, but these were served with a tortilla on the bottom, cheese and everything in between, and another tortilla on top, and cut. Totally impossible to eat with your hands, it became a mess on the plate. Huge menu, slow service, paid with cash the the server had to fumble around to find change as the register was empty. Very pleased with this place. Server was professionally pleasant. Restaurant was pretty clean with good ambiance. Complimentary house recipe salsa and white sauce were outstanding (never seen white sauce this far from the East Coast); however, the food took a little while to come out, so having our own bowls would have been nice. Restaurant Review Great food, poor service. Maybe because we did not order alcohol, but my pregnant wife and I (the driver) did not splurge on margaritas and were given the cold shoulder by the wait staff. This was sort of off the beaten path restaurant we found on trip advisor for a mexican meal. The food itself is not amazing sort of run of the mill mexican food with average prices. I can't say that I had a memorable experience and our waiter visited our table a total of 3 times (took our order, dropped the food off, and with the tab). 1st Food is Great!!! 2nd but the treatment by staff sucks! They rushed through my phone order and of course messed it up charging me almost 20 bucks extra (total order was only 30 bucks). When I asked about my bill I was made to feel like I was bothering the staff and they made it clear they were not happy fixing my order. When staff make a mistake they should not make the customer feel like it's their fault and unfortunately it wasn't till I got home that I realized how bad they messed up! This is my second time trying this restaurant. The first time I left after being ignored for an extended period of time at the bar with an empty restaurant. Today the service was quicker but the food and drink terrible. The House margaritas are just kept in a machine, nothing fresh about it and you couldn't even taste any tequila. Then I ordered nachos, which were quick to come out and absolutely soaked. I lifted up a couple of layers of chips and there was actually liquid on the bottom of the plate. I got two dishes to go through Suit and Tie Delivery. I ordered the seafood enchiladas, which were smaller than I expected them to be, but tasty. I also got the tilapia and shrimp with tortillas. Huge shrimp and lots of flavor. I think they give too much rice. You do get chips, salsa and a mystery sauce with all orders. I was disappointed though, because I ordered a side of pico de gallo to go with my tilapia and shrimp and it was not in my order. So that was a waste of $3. read more

After a long day of shopping, all that my family and I wanted to do was have a nice meal and then head home. As we pondered where to go we did not consider the date at all. Keep this in mid and the type of restaurant that this is when I tell you we went on May 5th! Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! As soon as we walked in the door we could tell that it was Cinco de Mayo. Despite this the wait for a table was not awful at all. The hostess was very kind and kept on top of open table and as soon as they were cleared the next party was seated. The area that they have for you to wait is very small and filled quickly. This caused an inconvenience for both the staff and the customers. In the meantime though it made for great people watching while we waited. Once seated the normality of a very busy restaurant hit. Our server was obviously very busy as it took her awhile to come and take our beverage order. By the time she got there we put in both our beverage and our food order. We were served our chips and salsa that all tables are served at the same time that we got our beverages. Our food came quickly after that but as soon as we got it our server left and we had no silverware. We ended up having to flag down another server to get us some. They were very kind about it and apologized profusely. I did not find that to be such a big issue. They had extra staff constantly circling the restaurant that would refill your beverage and see how your food was. The food was awesome. Having lived in Florida now for several years I have had some amazing Mexican food. This was not as good as some of the restaurants that I have been to down there but considering that it is in the middle of Minnesota it was very good. The prices for the portion sizes were fair and they have happy hour everyday! Half price appetizers and $3.99 for a (lime only) margarita! I will definitely go back! Also we told our server that we loved the shirt that she was wearing and we wanted to know if we could buy a couple. (they were so cute they were black with a pair of neon sunglasses and a hot pink mustache on them. Of course they were an advertisement for Jose Cuervo but who cares?!?) she said that she would go and check and when she came back she told us that they did not have any of them to sell but she gave us three free shirts (They were for Dos Equis)! read more

The other location was decent but this experience was terrible. Some friends and I came in to grab a quick lunch before heading home and it turned in to an OVER 2 HOUR experience for a bad lunch special. The restaurant wasn't crowded and the bar was mostly empty. We sat down to papery but fresh chips and really bland salsa. It took 20 minutes to get a glass of water and we didn't see our server for another 40 minutes +. ... that's not a typo. That's over an hour wait to place an order. The food came out pretty quickly after the order was placed and the burrito ended up barely being bigger than an enchilada. It was soggy, bland, and small. The rice was actually really good though.... After we finished eating the waiter came by with a refill for water (that had been empty for a while) and I asked for my check. 20 minutes later I walked up to the register and just told them what I had so I could pay, leave, and hopefully never experience service that bad again. If the food was good I'd come back to give them another shot. Maybe it was a new server. But, bad service AND bad food and I'll happily support someone else read more

Do you like poor service and a waiter who tells you you're wrong? Do you like to be served poorly thought out dishes that make you wonder what in the world you're eating? If you like one or more of the questions above, El Loro is your place to go. Simply put, the food is terrible. I can forgive Americanized establishments like El Loro knowing that I don't live in Mexico, but the service here is truly awful. My friend ordered a chicken quesadilla. It looked more like chicken with cheese sauce stuffed between a folded tortilla. Our waiter was incredibly rude as well. I hope you enjoy waiting 15 minutes for water or having to beg another table's server because that's what we ended up doing. The mole sauce was just a foot north of redeemable but the chicken was dry, the guac bland, and the ingredients, cheap. It's like they decided to go shopping at Rainbow, buy the cheapest, nastiest, ingredients, cook with it, and then charge us $10. Don't go here, avoid it like the plague. read more

I came here the other night for their Happy Hour to celebrate my new job, lol. It actually occurs twice a day, during regular HH time and after 8pm. I haven't been to the Eagan location, eventhough it is closer to where I live, but the Burnsville location just screams Mexican restaurant as soon as you walk in. You are greeted with bright yellow/orange walls, posters of Modelo and Dos Equis, sombreros, and on the night we came, even a mariachi band! Definitely unexpected on a cold night up in the North, haha. The prices here are very reasonable, and during HH which serves drink specials and half-price appetizers, they are downright scary. The most expensive, and best, item on the appetizer menu are the shrimp fajita nachos, which are originally $12. If you try anything, try these. The Mexican-style Shrimp cocktail is an amazing value as well (I got the regular size and it had no less than 8-10 huge shrimp swimming in a pico sauce inside a margarita glass), and I went ahead and got a few enchiladas ala carte just to round out the experience - 1 beef with the regular red sauce (ok) and 1 chicken with tomatillo sauce (good) - they didn't have a sour cream sauce, which was pretty disappointing. The service itself was excellent - I was never once out of something to drink, and they kept the chips and salsa coming. The waiters seemed to work in teams and a couple of them came to check how I meal was coming along and asking if we needed anything else. She said it didn't matter; there were only 2 servers. I totally understand the shortage of workers, but man you need to treat your paying customers better. My friends and I frequent El Loro in Burnsville frequently, as we love their street tacos, margarita's, chips, salsa and white cheese sauce. Everything there is good. So we had to go for Cinco de Mayo, right? We arrived early, which was a good thing as the place was packed, people waiting for tables as it was such a busy night. As always, even under the pressure of a packed house, we had FABULOUS service, great margaritas and our food was served quickly, warm and delicious.
