We went in for a late lunch and were greeted with an incredible smile by whom ended up being our server. The restaurant was cute and the menu extensive. We got the lunch combo #1 which was a taco and enchilada with either rice or beans (cheese enchilada and shredded beef taco) and a shredded beef chimichanga with both rice and beans. The salsa that came out was delicious and fresh; same with the chips. Best salsa and queso in the enchilada that I have ever had. The shredded beef was tender beef cubes with an amazing flavor. I tried this for lunch today and it looked promising. The atmosphere seemed authentic staff got orders out quickly. Food was below average. I am not a refined palate, but honestly the food I have at Taco Bell was better than what I consumed. Chips were warm, salsa was probably a mild- medium, meal was very hot. I had enchiladas supremas. It was a mix of bean, cheese, chicken, and beef enchiladas. It was slathered in salsa with scant other toppings or sides. I had a soft drink, cups were large size but wait staff never offered to get a refill which menu said were free. Price for meal and soda was below $14. It was unclear if I was to pay at table or up front. I was the only customer on entering shortly after 11 a couple came in behind me, so things were not busy and I hate to say staff was lackluster in service. I hate to be negative. Maybe this is not typical service and meal quality but this is the experience I had today for lunch. read more

First impression was that the chips are made in house and didn't come out of a bag. I ordered the green enchiladas and was immediately impressed with the hot plate. The rice was very hot and that is rare in a Mexican restaurant. The enchiladas were excellent with white chicken in them and just the right amount of cilantro. I had previously eaten at Rapidos and liked them but from now on I will eat at El Maguey. Best Mexican food and great service too. read more

I met a friend that works in Platte city here for lunch the other day. I can't stop dreaming about the burrito I had. I'll be back soon! I can't even remember the name of it- I typically love burritos so I asked the waiter what he recommended. He recommended this big delicious burrito with chicken and shrimp, smothered in white cheese. Absolutely perfect for me. I am not someone that can handle much spice, I didn't even have to tell him that. Staff was nice and helpful with pronouncing menu items. Their chips came out hot and fresh. Very nice Mexican restaurant. Ordered the Burrito Mexicano with shredded beef. The beef was amazing, cooked perfect and tasted great, topped with their red sauce and garnished with lettuce, tomato and sour cream. I was very pleased with the food and everything tasted great. I've been here a couple times now and this place rocks! Let me start by saying that the staff really helps make the place as great as it is. A thing that I genuinely enjoy is being legitimately welcomed and that is exactly what these great people do; it's a very comforting feeling to know that you are welcomed and wanted to dine here. The food is great and always comes out quick. Upon request, they have a house made "extra spicy" sauce which has a great burn. If you are familiar with my reviews, you know that the way to my heart is by spicy sauce. I got the three taco side order for right around six bucks, a bucket of beer, and a tequila. El Maguey, being a chain , can be hit and miss sometimes. This location still deserves my visits from time to time. The location is fairly easy to get to from the airport, and is in a strip mall. I recently found a somewhat strange burrito, that I was, at first bite, in love with. Maybe it has a bit of nostalgia that draws me in, or the flavors may remind me of something, but I order it almost every visit. I do deviate from this only for a quesadilla. The Burrito Macho is listed on their lunch menu only, but can be ordered at dinner as well. This behemoth of a burrito is filled with scrambled eggs, chorizo, cheese, and cut up french fries. All of this is topped with more of that " white" queso that all of these places have. Guys. Before you wrinkle that nose up...TRY IT. TIP ALERT: Ask for hot salsa. The flavor of the peppers they use in it will blow your mind. read more

I ate here a little over a year ago and got very sick. My husband eats here sometimes for lunch so I decided to tried it again last weekend but this time my dad got very sick. Saturday night found us too worn out to make the trip back into KC from the hotel we were staying out down the street, and with limited options, and it getting late, we settled on El Maguey. It's a small place in a strip mall, and was about half full around nine 'o'clock. The service was quick, and friendly. The food was about what I expected, and was filling. I had a Chimichanga that was tasty, although served with lettuce/pico etc. that tasted like the fridge it was in. My girlfriend enjoyed her three enchiladas. The cheese sauce was good with the entrees, but didn't really hold it's own just with chips (pretty mediocre tortilla chips) before the meal. WOW! This was fantastic. Born and bred KC native here, but lived the last 5 years in Seattle. Seattle is great, don't get me wrong, but they just ruin Mexican food for me. Stopped here on the way back to Sioux Falls. Just off interstate 29 in a strip mall. It looked small from the outside but that was deceiving, it's actually quite large. It has a sectioned off bar where smoking is allowed and it was very busy with what appeared to be the local crowd. Plenty of televisions with just about every sport on in the dining and bar area. I chose to have the 3 hard shell fried corn tortilla tacos, beef, pork, & chicken. All cooked to perfection and the meat was juicy & tender. It came with rice and refried beans of course which were also quite tasty. My companion had the carne asada dinner which also came with rice & beans. The carne asada meat was seasoned to perfection and cooked with onions, green peppers, & tomatoes. Definitely pass up the taco bell and enjoy some real Mexican food at this place! read more

The tacos de carne asada here were pretty good. They serve a decent size portion of meat and it has a nice smoky flavor. Not spicy at all though. The tacos for the taco Tuesday special were just okay. Kind of dry. The refried beans are the bomb! The soda glasses are huge which is great. We liked the chips and salsa. We received a coupon "Buy one Entree, get $5 off the Second" so we decided to try it. The food was typical Mexican food that tasted the same as 90% of most Mexican restaurants. Nothing special but not bad. When we went to pay they told us that our coupon was no good. Our bill was only $23.00 and the coupon required at least $25. The coupon did NOT mention a price limit. The sodas they serve are large with free refills. The staff is friendly and helpful and our food always arrives quickly. I took my 9 year old daughter here for dinner tonight. First she laughed from the parking lot saying we were eating in what looked like a gas station to her. i told her dont judge a book by its cover ..i swear I can't stand children ya'll...we get in then she is suddenly impressed with the decor. Best chile rellenos and tamales I've had in a long time. I love that you can order both a la carte if you're not feeling like eating a massive meal. Try the shrimp nachos, too. Trust me--they're life-changing! As far as drinks are concerned, the piña coladas are the bomb!
