This was our first time coming to this Mexican restaurant, and we consider ourselves to be Mexican food snobs! Ha! We love our Mexican food! The inside of the restaurant is classic industrial, cozy, super casual, and has a fun upbeat vibe. Everyone serving in the restaurant at all different levels is very kind and friendly. When we sat down, we were brought the typical basket of tortilla chips, along with their homemade salsa... And an extra surprise was there Mini bowl of queso dip. It was creamy and yummy. The salsa wasn't as spicy as we prefer, but it was decent. Our sever took our drink rider which were margaritas. They have a very long list of all types of flavors of margaritas... Are you in the mood, this is a place to go! They also offer three different sizes in the margaritas, plus a ton of other drinks as they have a very large bar. It was a Saturday night, so It was pretty crowded, but there was not a wait for a table. Our waitress brought back our margaritas, but it took her over 35 minutes to get to our table to even take our dinner order. At least they brought us three baskets of chips to hold us over! After a little over a half hour, she came back to our table and asked us if we were still waiting for our food... We explained to her that she never actually took our dinner order to begin with. We ordered street tacos and jalepeno cream cheese ans chicken enchiladas... black beans and rice. Everything was tasty. We were starving at this point because it was almost an hour when our food arrived. She apologized for forgetting about us in between the tables served before us... We visited for the first time. I had a pork burrito. My husband had carne adobada (may not be the right name). The pork on my dish wash very tender and flavorful. Loved the cheese they pour over. First time coming here. Very good! Really nice inside, think it used to be a pizza ranch. They give you a cheese dip when you sit down along with the chips and salsa so that was nice. Besides bbq I've struggled to find good food in the Kansas City area. I had a taste for Mexican and found El Potro on Yelp. I am so happy I found it. I ordered the chicken Laura's lunch special with black beans. They start each table with chips and salsa but also a white queso. The queso is delicious. My food came out fast and hot. Holy cow what isn't good here? Seriously, I've tried half the massive menu so far and haven't found anything yet that I haven't loved. The service is amazing, and you get chips with salsa and some free cheese dip as soon as you're sat. The cocktails are fantastic and I just can't get enough of the food. !!EXCELLENT!! Two+ years after relocating from the late great state of Oregon and the marxist city of Portland we finally found a Mexican restaurant that we love. We saw El Porto for the first time a few months ago and thought it had closed but no, they were getting ready to open. So we were in for the first time a week or so ago. Despite being busy we were seated quickly and just as quickly served complimentary chips (warm, light and crisp) and salsa (spicy but not too). They were great and kept coming without asking. My wife had a fajita quesadilla. She said it was one of the best ever and based on the appearance I believe her. It was chock full of goodness. I opted for their seafood salad. Big and plentiful, I had to take some home along with quesadilla. The service was excellent and although I asked our server's name it escapes me and I'm sorry because she was very attentive, personable, and energetic all while managing a very large table in close proximity. She did an excellent job. Did I mention they are the first and only Mexican restaurant we've been to in the area that offers black beans? Just a wonderful experience all around and we'll be going back just as soon as we start jonesing for good Tex-Mex. It won't be long. read more

I have a theory that large menus mean the food isn't going to be so great. I think the restaurant relies on premade foods which they heat and serve. Unfortunately this proved true with El Potro. The salsa was very generic. Not much spice and fairly watery. Our food came quickly (another red flag) and the portions were generous. That being said, it had no flavor - none. I'm not sure how you make chili rellenos tasteless but they were. My husband (who I have mentioned before standard for Mexican food is Taco Bell) looked at me and said Does your food have any taste? " I shook my head no. I will say that the wait staff are very friendly and quick to refill drinks , salsa, etc. The prices are also reasonable. Bottom line - we won't be back. read more

The only thing I will say is the complimentary salsa has a lot of cilantro which I don't love because I feel like it gives a soapy taste but everything else was great. Portion sizes are HUGE! This was our first visit since the new location opened in Liberty. The space is very big, and there are plenty of seats. It's a typical Mexican restaurant decor, but the food was great. Many choices and a lot of food on each plate. I like that they serve you chips, salsa, and queso while you wait for your food. We were unaware a new Mexican restaurant had opened in Liberty as my wife and I spotted it off the Hwy. It was a Saturday evening around 7pm the lot was pretty full the restaurant was full we figured it must be decent after all we are from Mexico and very critical about Mexican food in the U.S. We were served mild and hot salsa and noticed a third dip which was queso this never happens! We proceeded to open the menu and were overwhelmed with the options. In fact the waiter stopped by 3-times to ask if we were ready to order and we had not finished reading the menu. We started off with a Michelada which was great and a house margarita to check the playing field and it was not bad at all. We figured lets try the Fajitas Supremo for two the serving was like for 3-4 and reasonably priced with steak, chicken and shrimp. I love frijoles borrachos these had meat in the mix and it was ok I would have loved a bit more flavor but I still recommend. Overall we had a great dinner and excellent service and for fajitas for two and two tall alcoholic drinks it was still cheaper than 4- beers at GEHA at Arrowhead Stadium. read more

Decided to stop here for dinner on a whim. The parking lot was jam packed, so I thought we might have a long wait. Surprisingly they were able to seat us after only a few minutes. The restaurant was huge and was basically completely full during the time we were there. They took our drink order right away and brought us the chips, salsa, and queso. The chips were nicely salted and the salsa had good flavor, but was not particularly spicy. The queso was pretty similar to most queso, but it was good. I had the Mexico City Combination plate. Definitely bring your appetite if you go for a combo, there is a TON of food. The enchilada and tamale were both very good. With the enchilada I could've gone for a bit more spice, but the sauce was otherwise flavorful and they used good cheese for the inside. Unfortunately the chile relleno was not great. The breading was bland and the Chile itself had zero flavor, which was disappointing. My husband tried the barbacoa Burrito which he really enjoyed. We've been here a few times, but hadn't tried it since we moved up to liberty. Ordered some takeout to pick up. I do like that they have a drive up window so you can pull up to pick your food up. My bf ordered the fajitas Los cabos, which is a variety of meats and then has a cream cheese sauce on top. Our order did not come as it was supposed to have, he asked for no veggies but everything else was supposed to be on there. There was no sauce at all, it was essentially a grilled meats platter with rice and tortillas. I ordered the sabroso burrito which was steak and shrimp, topped with white sauce and sliced avocado. The avocado was missing on mine but the burrito was still really good. We both tried something different this time, I wish we would have been able to know what the Los cabos fajitas are actually supposed to taste like but probably won't order again online. We drove to Liberty, MO for lunch at El Porto today because we had heard that it was "the best " Mexican food there. I am not sure if it is the best in Liberty, since this is the only Mexican restaurant that we have eaten in there. But, I can tell you it was really good! When we arrived we were seated fairly quickly and our server was very polite and helpful. The ambience was like a cute Mexican cantina, and was very clean. They have huge food and drinks menus so it took us awhile to decide what to order. Our waiter was very patient. Meanwhile we went through a whole basket of complementary chips, salsa, and cheese dip. I ended up getting one of the specials which was crab and shrimp enchiladas with Spanish rice and black beans. It was so good, and the portion was so big, that I had to take quite a bit of it home. My husband ordered a combination plate with a pork tamale, chili relleno, and enchilada. It also came with both rice and a selection of beans as a side. He also had so much good that he had to ask for a doggie bag. Overall, the restaurant looks like a cute Cantina, service is good, the food menu, and the drink menu were both huge, food presentation was great, portions were big, and the food was really good.
