All that and no guac? Went to this location to celebrate a colleague's birthday. Prior to coming here, I came to the realization that not only am I a brussel sprouts and chocolate chip cookie connoisseur, but I can now add fajitas to the list as well. We'll start with the positive: -decent chips and salsa. Chips were sturdy but the salsa had little flavor. I'd give them a 2.5/5. -they were decent with the refills of water but due to it being so hot outside AND inside, the ice melted quickly. -we got a few pitchers of the wild berry margarita and surprisingly, it was really good. Unfortunately, due to the heat and us getting it over the rocks, it melted quickly. Room for improvement: -better circulation of air in the restaurant. I'm amazed at how hot it was and there wasn't one person in that place that wasn't sweating. AC in the Stl summer is a necessity, so beware if you choose to go. - this is the first time EVER that I've gotten fajitas and it didn't come with guac. Not even the little scoop that you usually get on the salad! NOTHING. The fajitas were pretty good; they had a decent amount of seasoning but the rice was relatively bland. Overall, I'd give it a 3 out of 5. Not the best but it could certainly be better. read more

Been awhile since coming here, but decided to have our (American celebration) Cinco de Mayo meal at El Maguey - although a chain, one of the more authentic restaurants in my local area; the food quality was excellent, tasty dishes served hot from the kitchen, well presented and with friendly, prompt service. Started with apps, Guacamole side and Ground beef cheese dip. Guacamole was creamy and flavorful. Liked the ground beef cheese dip as served with grilled onions and green peppers. Both were great with chips! Entrees ordered were Carnitas dinner, Pollo Michoacano (with Chorizo and cheese sauce), California burrito, and the Pollo with Veggies and rice dish. All were very good and this is just a sampling of their menu offerings. There are several Mexican restaurants to choose, but we enjoyed returning here for a nice and casual family meal. Ambience is relaxed, lots of good options for drinks and this location has been here over 10 years so they have a loyal customer base. Will be coming back again soon. Enjoy! read more

Years ago, we were almost weekly regulars at El Maguey on Olive before we discovered Mi Lupita in about 2004. We had never been to El Maguey in the Valley until now. We wanted something close and they just showed up on AAdvantage dining. This was lunch and as we are doing, we kept it light. Ms T just had a ground beef tostada and I had the tilapia platter. It was all OK, not remarkable but suited our needs. Ms T still likes Mi Lupita's ground beef the best of any that she eats (and that is pretty much everywhere). I did not substitute refritos for the rice with the fish because I don't need the fat in the beans and knew I would not eat the rice. I just don't need the carbs and besides the rice was pretty boring. I was happy with the tilapia and salad. There was plenty of fish, I took half home. El Maguey makes good salsa. It was well balanced between sweet and sour and has plenty of garlic. We liked that we did not have to pick out hunks of onion. I found the oregano a little bitter, otherwise very good. This place is so close, I see us returning for lunch now and again. I can get huevos in several forms or fish tacos or grilled chicken. read more

Went in to place a to-go order and they no longer provide chips and salsa with take outs. You have to buy them unless you eat there. I also ordered bean and cheese dip and was told I have to order chips to go with the dip??? I ordered almost $80 of food and still had to pay for chips and salsa and the salsa came in a very small container. The food was good but I can't understand why they made the change. read more

DH ordered a steak and shrimp dish sans sauce- it came with all the usual sides of rice, sour cream, lettuce, salsa. I got a burrito smothered with white sauce filled to brim with chicken and shrimp. Yes. I had the street tacos (steak, fish, fried pork, and chicken on corn tortillas). I'd rank them in that order. The steak and fish were the winners. I would come back for the attentive service and excellent happy hour: frozen margarita, 20 ounces for under six dollars; and the tortilla chips, which were fresh, light and hard to stop eating. The salsa tasted fresh, but was too mild for my taste. I was disappointed with the salad. The spinach greens were not fresh, and the overall salad just looked sad. I've always loved El Maguey, but the funniest thing is I had never been to a St. Louis location until now. I started going to this restaurant chain in Columbia, MO. The service was always fast, the food came out fast, and it was totally worth the price you pay. Also, in a college town, you could arrive in your sweatpants and no one would judge you. Nothing's changed! Although I wasn't wearing sweatpants...haha! I ordered the chicken chimichanga per usual. And per usual, service was quick. We got our chips and salsa, and shortly after received our entrees. Food was hot, flavors were on point (perhaps a tad bit salty for my palate), but I really don't have any complaints. I think one of the shining star ingredients at this place has always been their queso. And it's still soooo delish. Nice looking place and appears clean - always a plus. I had their signature dish which was a trio of shrimp enchiladas with cheese sauce over them and rice, guacamole & sour creme on the side. They presented a good enough looking plate that I snapped a picture to include with my review. The shrimp were nicely seasoned if a bit salty. The cheese sauce was your standard queso blanco. The rice had a good flavor and nice slivers of onion to punch it up a bit. All in all, it was good - not great - but good. The dessert flan was also tasty if similar to flan I've had in any number of Mexican restaurants where you can order by number without looking at the menu. Again, good but nothing spectacular. I suppose the best things that I can say about this restaurant are that it is clean, equivalent to most Mexican restaurants in the US and convenient to my house. read more

El Maguey 141 & Olive Location changed ownership a few years ago. My wife and went there weekly for 16 years under prior ownership and everything was always perfect in food quality, customer service and environment. Our recent visit was terrible as the food was not good and very small portions. The tables were dirty that they call clean, The Rest Room Dirty, They did not have the AC on as they are too cheap to provide customers with a cool comfortable environment. The employees are not clean and have an attitude like you are intruding on their time. I saw the employee pour chips from a table clean up into another basket they served new customers. That is disgusting!! The Health Department will be called by us as it is Horrible there now and they need to close their doors. We tell everyone we know NOT TO GO TO EL MAGUEY 141 & Olive. I posted on Face Book as well and will do daily postings to save people from what we went through. read more

About average for an el maguey. The place isnt the nicest looking but the food was good. The fajitas mix was on par with other mexican restaurants. Enchiladas were ok. Sauce was more of a salsa and pretty watery on the plate. Chips and salsa were good. read more

This is one of those instances when I should have gone with my gut but didn't. I don't love the El Maguey Mexican Restaurants but ended up at this one on a dinner date. They only had about 5 tables and I thought the service was a little slow considering but not agonizing or bad. The waiter was very friendly. I ordered the Tamale Deluxe (Handmade tamale topped with cheese dips, lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. Served along with rice, beans, ground beef, and chicken. Also includes 2 taquitos 1 beef & 1 chicken.) with no beans or sour cream. There was about 1 teaspoon of guacamole on top of a plate covered in queso. Holy queso. They were heavy handed with it! Under the queso was a decently mediocre tamale, 2 taquitos, and 2 kinds of meat. The price is reasonable and the service is decently friendly. The complimentary chips are fresh and the salsa is red and flavorless. El Maguey is your typical Gringo strip mall Mexican. I might be back but I'm never choosing it and it is what it is. read more

We were promptly seated and given chips and salsa. I almost immediately noticed a long hair mixed in--like totally weaved throughout--with our chips so I asked for a replacement basket. They took the chip basket but I had to flag down our server to get a replacement. I ordered the lunch steak fajitas which arrived a few moments later than everyone else's food. They were hot but the steak wasn't anything special. Just little bits of well done steak. I wasn't too disappointed as it was an inexpensive lunch, but I would've been disappointed if the steak had been the dinner price. They were fine when fixed up with guac and sour cream. My dad ordered the beef chimichanga, which is his go-to at every Mexican place) and said the beef was so salty he almost couldn't eat it. I'm pretty sure he didn't finish it. The food is decent but the management has much to be desired. They will do whatever the can to avoid accepting a coupon. And don't seem to care about their customers. We had a $5 off with the purchase of two entrees. We ordered two entrees, a coke, and a beer that was on special. When it came time to pay our bill, we were told we could not use the coupon because the beer was a special. I asked if they would have honored the coupon if my husband had ordered water instead of beer and was told "yeah, sure". We dined with another couple. They had a buy one get one entree coupon. It too was not honored. The reason was because one of the meals (the less expensive one) was on special. Okay.... It's buy one, get one. Who cares if it is on special? Before he swiped my card I said that I was very disappointed how this was being handled and that neither couple would be returning. He just shrugged his shoulders. This is one of my regular spots for lunch hour during the week. I usually go on Fridays around 1pm and get served quickly with plenty of time to eat and catch up with coworkers and still have time to get back before our hour lunch is up. My favorite is the chicken nachos. Everything tastes fresh. Big portions. The complementary salsa is very tastey. The waitstaff is friendly and efficient. The lunch prices are great as well. My boyfriend and I discovered this place when we moved to Chesterfield 3.5 years ago. Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the area. The food is amazing, service is always good, and the margs are delicious. We always consider trying something new and branching out but we somehow always end up right back at El Maguey in the valley. Oh man. I love El maguey. Specifically the one in ofallon. And I always get the same thing: fajita mix nachos, the half order. It comes with chips, queso, beef, chicken, shrimp, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. This location just doesn't make it very tasty. I dont know why, or how you can really mess that up, but the last three times I have been here, it has been old, and cold tasting. The service has been very lacking, the soda always tastes flat... I honestly don't understand the El Maguey phenomenon. I decided to give it a try with a friend out of curiosity (I mean I see them all over) The chips and salsa are just ok and while I don't overtly object to Americanized Mexican food, their food seems like no actual cooking was done. I feel like everything comes out of a can and popped into the microwave. I was hoping to be wowed by the margaritas at least but my strawberry and my friends mango both tasted like from the bag slushy machine drinks. There are a lot of other Mexican restaurants to choose from but if I want Mexican and El Maguey is the only option I would rather just go home and microwave myself an oversized tortilla with yellow cheese in it and call that my Mexican meal of the day. read more

We normally go to the Ballwin location, but we were in the valley and decided to try this location. Bad decision. We were seated promptly and our order taken. That was the last time we saw our waiter. After 30 minutes, we finally snagged another waiter to check on our food. Surprise, it was ready! It was lukewarm, but given the time it took to get it, we decided not to risk sending it back to warm it up. The Ballwin location is always fast and the food is great. Found this on Yelp when staying at Jellystone Park. Very nice staff & clean restaurant. Would give staff a 4 and the food a 3. Very good pitcher of margaritas. I had chicken fajitas which were slightly better than average. Husband had Rio Grande burrito. He said he'd rate it a 4. Kids had kids meals of chicken nuggets and cheese quesadilla both served with french fries. They were pretty typical and kids liked them. Server was very attentive and kid friendly.
