Great food, pleasant atmosphere but front desk staff attitude could use some tweaking.

The decor and style itself makes a strong first impression, but then the food comes out. The interior is well-decorated and fun. Lots of lights and color. I thought the chips were good. Fresh. I liked how they brought all four of us our own salsa without us having to request it. But the main courses....UGH. The ground beef "crispy" taco had no seasoning, onions, or sauce. No flavor. The grease from the taco meat made the tortilla just limp out and fall apart all over my plate. Definitely wasn't crispy. The cheese enchilada was honestly the worse thing I've eaten in a very long time... it came drowning in queso that tasted overly processed, cheap, fake plastic-like slime rather than something fresh or authentic. Imagine the cheapest jar of Velveeta queso. There you have it. Inside the "cheese" enchilada was more of the thick plastic queso. No real cheese was to be found. If you look at the picture of my meal... the tortilla looks limp, pale and let me tell you, it tasted the same as it looked. Gross. My cousin got the same thing, but also with a burrito but he said there was hardly any beans. Both were drowning in the same plastic queso. The rice and beans were just ok. So disappointing. Food was served fast, but too fast! We ordered and within 5 minutes we had our "fresh" food. So that let us know it was all pre-prepared. The waitress could hardly speak any English which made communication a real struggle. She messed up our order due to this and we had to repeat things often and speak slowly using hand gestures to try and help communicate. We were never were offered refills on drinks, chips or salsa. There was one other table being used and approximately six waiters and waitresses just standing around watching us, talking amongst themselves and it made it just feel awkward. We felt "on display". Being watched from afar because they all seemed very bored so we were their prime source of entertainment I'm guessing lol. Unfortunately none of us enjoyed our experience at all. It's great to have a restaurant right off 121st west of Memorial! The location is great for anyone who lives in the area. The parking lot is plenty big as well. This location is a step up in decor from the other locations. It's El Maguey "Prime" on the sign. It's spacious and clean inside with soft cloth booths (not cold pleather!). The bar is nice with chairs and TVs as well. Food - White queso is great! - Salsa is mild and flavorful, not bland. - Quesa-Birria is their birria taco platter. If you like birria, you will like their version as well! The meat is incredibly moist with a delicious dipping sauce. - Tortilla soup is delicious! It's not in a XL bowl like other places, but still ample. If you are starving, get something with it. - Fiesta Bowl with grilled chicken was delicious. It was more rice and beans than lettuce. Their chicken is grilled nicely with a tasty flavor, not bland. Drinks - The Patrón Rita is good and strong, only needed 2! - The Flaming Margarita was fun too. It was rum-based, strawberry, and had a vodka bottle added to the top of it for a kick. - They have a nice variety of margaritas with and without the standard mix. I love without the mix as it's easier on the stomach. Staff - Our server, Mr. Lopez, was kind and attentive, but didn't rush us to order like many similar places. We took our time and enjoyed it. The only other downside besides the margarita mix is the outdoor patio. They have the land space for a large outdoor patio, but it only fits 5 tables. And here it is, the season finale of the El Maguey restaurant tour; the cartel's newest operation El Maguey Prime, in Bixby. With the name "Prime" expectations were set high. It is a new modern building, roomy, well-lit by a combination of natural light provided by the many large windows, and the numerous very attractive ornamental lighting fixtures. Bright decorative artificial plants are scattered throughout the restaurant including a large artificial tree, draped with colorful tassels. Fronds of ferns and creepers of ivy hang from the ceiling. The effort creates an ambiance of evening dining outdoors. The Chilaquallies. Not my usual Mexican menu selection. The picture looked fabulous. Mine with grilled chicken. Chips and chicken all covered with a mild fresh tangy sauce, decorated with a squiggle of creama, a little pickled purple onion, and a sprinkle of cilantro. Two sunny side on the side. Drag those big bright huevos over on top. Spice the whole meal up with the restaurant's salsa picosa, break the yoks and Bam! That was delicious. Look at that picture! My wife ordered the California Burrito. Really, a California Burrito. I questioned her judgment. She raved about it. I tasted of it. I must admit, it was damn good. Professional, attentive service. So, here are two meals that I would recommend to any of my most discriminating, Mexican food eatin' friends. Overall, a very enjoyable Mexican restaurant dining experience, in Bixby. Easy five star! Ever since this place opened, me and my family have yearned to try it. We finally had the opportunity to go and we had a great time! The food here was excellent. I really loved their chips and queso. The salsa was also good too. I was a little adventurous and I tried the tacos de la Calle (street tacos). They were amazing! The rice and beans on the side were great too. I was impressed by how clean the inside was. The bathrooms were very clean too. The inside of El Maguey was very nearly decorated. I enjoyed seeing all of the plant decor they had. The service here was amazing! Our waitress, Sofia, was very kind and helpful. Overall, great place and I highly recommend it! read more

We've eaten here one time in the restaurant and it was fine. Good service, but nothing to write home about. We hadn't really thought about going back, but today I called in a large order or guacamole, queso, and chips for pick up. This was $28.31. I'm not even sure the pictures show what a small amount this is but it's absolutely not $30 worth of food. I will say the guacamole is at least full and there are a pound of chips that we don't have enough dip to use. read more

The food was disappointing. The chorizo queso tasted like watered-down Velveeta rather than real, flavorful cheese. The signature margaritas were overly heavy on the sweet-and-sour mix and very light on tequila -- if there was any tequila at all, it was hard to tell. Service was lacking. The staff seemed unhappy to be there and almost annoyed to be serving us. We sat at the bar, and the overall energy felt gloomy and unwelcoming. The atmosphere felt sterile -- not light, bright, or modern. I had heard this place compared to Mexican food in California, but it didn't come close. In California, Mexican cuisine typically uses real cheese and fresh lime juice in handcrafted drinks, which makes a noticeable difference. read more

The food is wonderful and the staff is very nice, however, we went there because they specifically say on their website that they have a gluten free menu and they mention being aware of allergies so it looked like a great option for my family. We have family members with celiac disease and going out to eat can be very difficult. I really thought this would be a good experience based on their website but once you are in the restaurant the staff just looks confused when you ask about gluten. They do not have a gluten free menu even though website says they do. We have given them two chances. The first time they seemed knowledgeable and assured us that the chips were safe. Last night we went and were told they are not safe - they are made in a shared fryer. The last time we went we were told the rice wasn't safe, last night we were told it was. This is very stressful and confusing. We only chose this restaurant because they seemed to be aware of allergies and ready to be helpful and while they are very nice, they just seem confused and give conflicting information on what is safe to eat. It is important because this is not a preference, it is a real medical condition. read more

We loved our experience at El Maguey! My husband and I visited for a late evening dinner, and we loved the ambiance and our food was fantastic! Our server gave wonderful suggestions for food choices. My husband had the Quesa-Birria and I had the Tacos El Maguey on corn tortillas. We will definitely be coming back very soon! read more

Good service. Never trust "decor". Chips and dip ok. Hot plate BUT: red chili enchilada had no flavor and the refried beans were lackluster at best. Not fried let alone refried. Flavorless food. The restaurant itself, and the decor were impressive, so I was hoping for a great meal. Sadly, the food does NOT match the upscale decor. I ordered nachos & they brought out this "stuff" on a plate. It was chips covered with grilled chicken, and it was swimming in this queso blanco (white cheese) stuff. Who makes nachos like that??? I asked if they forgot to add some other ingredients. They said they would bring the "premium" nachos. These were blue corn chips, with the grilled chicken, jalapenos, etc but still covered in this queso blanco. My friend ordered enchiladas, and again, hers was literally swimming in that darned white cheese crap. What the hey??!! I've noticed that white cheese stuff being used more and more lately in other Mexican restaurants too. There are plenty of good Mexican places to eat that do not drown their dishes with white cheese sauce. It's not that good, a little goes a very long way, and seems to be a cop out for real flavor & seasonings. The service was ok but that wasn't great either & the place was pretty empty when we were there. We won't be back. read more

This was a disappointment. The chips and salsa were good but went downhill after that. I got the beef enchilada's ground beef. It is just ground beef with no seasoning on it and rolled up. I had high hopes for this place being only 3-4 min away read more

The food is really good but don't sit at the bar. They really need to hire a bartender. Even though they have people working behind the bar, the waitstaff took our order. We waited 20 minutes for the bar staff to pour two beers. Then watched the bar staff set the beers on the side of the bar for the waitstaff to finally come by, pick them up and walk them two feet to us. It's a horrible system and we saw several drinks sit and get warm. read more

Atmosphere was wonderful staff friendly, but food is terrible! Queso was very runny average. Salsa was different. Didn't care for it. Had a lot of oregano in it. Fish tacos had really fishy and weird flavors.. I order fish tacos almost everywhere I go and these were disgusting.
