I had tried El Mambo several years ago and enjoyed my meal so when I was visiting Cape Coral again I went again. The restaurant is nothing fancy, but the staff and food makes up for that. The menu is quite extensive and has everything you would expect in a Puerto Rican restaurant. I ordered the Cuban sandwich and the CHICKEN MILANESSA. Both were very good. The chicken dinner came with two sides. I chose sweet plantains and yucca. All tasted very authentic. Next time I visit Cape Coral I will surely return. read more

I stopped in El Mambo to pick up a Cuban sandwich to go. The restaurant has been remodeled inside since our last hurricane. Everything was new and clean inside since my last visit a few years ago. We were staying with locals and they suggested take-out from this nearby Cuban joint. We ordered all of the Tuesday specials, in addition we ordered a Cuban sandwich, tamales and additional sides of black beans, sweet plantains, etc. We also ordered some flan and tres leches cake for dessert. The ground beef Picadillo was very good. The arroz con pollo and carne con papa were also good as were the tamales. The Cuban sandwich was great. The desserts were delicious as was the mango milkshake. The gal running the counter was very helpful. When we came for pick-up she showed us each container so we knew we had the right order. Definitely the most popular / known Cuban spot in south Cape Coral. Although prices recently went up (I guess they had to eventually) they still have some of the best breakfast and daily specials you can get. Service is always good and staff is friendly. The food can be a bit hit or miss but you will always leave stuffed or packing leftovers. The dishes that I think they consistently do well are the Ropa Vieja, Lechon Asado, Arroz con Pollo and Tostones. The Vaca Frita is also a good choice here but can sometimes come out a bit tough and not as crispy as it could be. Also, really recommend the breakfast if you're looking for some great value. The only thing that I really don't recommend is the Cuban Sandwich as they don't put any roasted pork in it, so it's essentially a ham and cheese on Cuban bread. read more

Absolutely the laziest staff I have experienced in a while. I walked in this morning for a cafe con leche (Cuban latte), and the woman (didn't get her name) served me a cappuccino from a gas station instant coffee maker. I requested that she make it with the Cuban espresso machine and she declined to do so and argued with me that there was no difference between the Cuban espresso maker and the gas station machine. She continued to tell me in Spanish that all the "gringos" like the coffee from the instant gas station machine and there was no need for her to dirty the Cuban espresso machine for me. Lol. Mind you I am Cuban and there is quite the difference between instant coffee and Cuban espresso. I can honestly say that I will never walk into or recommend this establishment for anything. Not even for a glass of water. She may give me water straight from the canal behind the restaurant. p.s. don't argue with customers when they request a specific item that you clearly have but don't want to make because you have to clean it afterwards. read more

Sadly, this place was El Yucko! We started off with a beef and a chicken empanadas. The shell itself was bland at best. The chicken was devoid of any flavor. The beef was good, but the shell kind of ruined it. I had the whole snapper. Here again, it was bland. It came with two sides. I had the tamale and the sweet plantains. The tamale was terrible. After two bites, it sat there. The sweet plantains were not only not sweet, but were cold and flavorless. The wife had their Cuban sandwich. Is was Ok, but nothing special. I actually felt a bit sick to my stomach after this meal. The only reason I gave this two stars is because the servers were excellent. I should have known better when we walked in and the place was empty. Seriously, take a hard pass on this place. read more

Del Prado Blvd is not Calle Ocho. This busy Cuban diner offers food that is good filling cheap and no doubt authentic in some sort of way, but not the way you want when you're not Cuban and you go to a Cuban restaurant. (Or maybe even if you're Cuban IDK.) Biggest complaint: no roast pork in the Cuban sandwich, just good Cuban bread, cheese, mustard, pickles, Oscar Meyer luncheon meat ham. "That's the way it's supposed to be," the waitress said when we asked her why there was no roast pork in the Cuban sandwich, "it's the way we do it." Okay then. It wasn't bad for a toasted ham sandwich, but it didn't taste as good as it would have with roast pork, and so to me I felt like I hadn't gotten a Cuban sandwich. So be it. A lechon asado lunch special was a good value st $6.99, with a large portion of pork (studded with a couple of nice crispy greasy pieces of pig skin), with a choice of two sides. We chose white rice and black beans, which tasted just fine even though the cups of beans was really a cup of liquid with the odd bean. A side salad at $2.99 was a bit of lettuce and sliced tomato, no dressing. A café con leche was tepid and not the Cuban coffee of your dreams, but it was of a piece with the porkless Cubano. Authentic Cuban? I'm not qualified to say. The best Cuban food I've ever had? Decidedly not. The best cheap, filling lunch to be had on Del Prado Boulevard on a rainy hot summer Sunday? I ordered Pollo Empanizado (breaded chicken). I'll start with the worst part of the entire meal. Plastic fried into my chicken. It tastes like the oil is repurposed for a whole month. The three foam containers of beans were stacked melting the plastic top and spilling it all into the bag soaking the three appetizers. I wasn't as pleased as I thought I'd be. The black Moro rice is okay, the bistec palomilla (steak with onions) came a yellowish color and wasn't so appealing nor tasty. (I actually got a stomachache) the chicken had a weird taste to it. We ordered a white rice with grilled chicken and beans and they forgot the beans... the lemonade was weird it wasn't natural lemonade it had a lime green highlighter tint to it, and it didn't even taste like Minute Maid or country club it was a a weird lemonade. The worst part a group or us ate here and most of us had a tummy ache with diarrhea. There is limited parking at front and at the side but there is ample parking in the back side of building. We had breakfast here several time and we love the fresh squeezed orange juice, Cuban coffee with our eggs and sausages! I came alone during late lunch break after 2:00 PM. There were only 6 tables of customers! As you enter, Lucas announced, today they have three specials, Arroz con Pollo (Chicken with Yellow Rice), Carne con Papa (Beef with Potatoes) and Picadillo (Ground Beef). I had Rabo Encendido (Oxtail) and Lechon Asado (Roast Pork) at this place and they were excellent. Today I opted for Picadillo (Ground Beef) with white rice and Red Bean. They were huge portion and delicious. Add a little Chili Willy hot sauce and you are in Seven Heaven. Instead of my regular Guava Shake, I ordered the Mango Shake. Unbelievable, the bill is only little over $10! The waitress is always smiling, pleasant and never rush! BTW, Mambo is in my lunch list in Cape Coral! read more

Cuban food is a scarcity back home in DC. I'm in Florida, so naturally my husband and I want some Cuban food. My parents took us here because it's one of their favorite places. The decor, etc is basic, which doesn't bother me. I'm there for serious food anyway, not some fancy plated thing. Everything on the menu is inexpensive and generous in portion sizes. I had a mango shake and a steak sandwich, while my husband had the cubano and a double cuban coffee. The shake was good, and my steak sandwich had onion straws in it that provided a satisfying crunch. The steak was a little thin. My husband wasn't particularly impressed with his cubano. He felt that the bread wasn't impressive, and that he could get a better cubano back in DC, as scarce as they are. In all, the meal was GOOD, but it wasn't EXCELLENT. I guess the reason I'm so critical is because we're in Florida, and the abundance of available Cuban cuisine means that you gotta stay in your 'A' game. I really liked the steak which I cannot remember the name of exactly. It was charro something or other. Now I'm am not one that likes tropical style food but this place is good. The beans and rice where typical but honestly the steak was amazing. Small family place with charm. If you like Cuban sandwiches they make a great one too! The quality of the food is high, but let me mention the prices. We each ordered the Breakfast Special for $2.99. It included 3 eggs, Cuban bread toasted, a large helping of bacon, sausage or ham AND cafe con leche. Amazing, really. We also ordered two empanadas at $1 each, a meat and a ham & cheese. The total bill for the two of us, including tax but not tip was a ridiculous $8.46. There was so much food, we took home part of the meal.
