The staff welcoming and friendly. My partner and I had the shrimp scampi and the oxtail with rice and beans and sweet plantains. We also had the mixed salad. The pictures online do not do this establishment any justice. The shrimp scampi was like any other shrimp scampi. Tasty and buttery. No noodles. It came with rice and beans. The oxtails were delicious. Tomato based stew. Paired with the rice beans and sweet plantains was the perfect bite. It is greasy but it's delicious. The salad was fresh. They have oil and vinegar that you could add. But I used the salad the cut the oil in the oxtail and shrimp. I would recommend this establishment to pay for professional photos. I blew into South Florida on a late flight, the kind that leaves your back stiff and your stomach growling. By the time I checked into the hotel, the kitchen had closed up shop tighter than a bank vault after hours. A cabbie, the talkative type, said there was a Cuban café that might do the trick the next day. Said it with the kind of confidence that comes from knowing where to find a good plate when the city's asleep. I made a mental note. Next morning, after a half-hearted attempt at the hotel gym--arm day, always arm day--I followed my gut and my informant's lead straight to San Luis Café. Rolled in around 2 o'clock, give or take. The place was dead quiet, like the calm before a storm. The cook and the waitress were huddled near the door, deep in conversation. Didn't flinch when I walked in. I took a seat near the window, the kind of spot where a man can keep an eye on both the dining room and the street. Outside, the sky was turning the color of bruises, lightning slicing it open like a knife. Inside, it was another world--clean, calm, dry. The kind of joint that doesn't try too hard. Cuban flags draped the walls, old travel posters from Havana watching me like ghosts from another time. I ordered the ropa vieja, figured it was the safe bet. Comes with two sides. I went with black beans, white rice, and threw in some tostones for good measure. What can I say? I like a little crispiness with the storm. The food came quick. Hot, flavorful, and with enough heart to make you forget you're eating alone. The shredded beef was a touch salty, but nothing a can of Diet Coke couldn't handle. The beans were mild, just like I remembered from my last trip through Little Havana. Cuban comfort food--understated, steady, familiar. The plantains, though--that's where they got me. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, like a dame with a secret. Forget fries. These things could win wars. The waitress, friendly but not overbearing, checked in just enough to remind me I hadn't disappeared completely. When I was ready to vanish back into the wet streets, I paid at the counter and grabbed a medianoche to go. A little something for later, when the night got quiet and the city got loud. All in all? A satisfying, no-frills meal that didn't shake me down for more than it was worth. Stopped in just before catching a flight back home. A bit hard to find as it was kind of hidden in the back of a plaza. Ordered a Cuban sandwich which I was craving. Ambiance was on the empty side. There was one other person eating alone and one couple. Maybe I just arrived at the wrong time. Service was acceptable. Older man who I assume is the cook came out from the back on the way to the restroom and looked a bit on the grouchy side. But, we all have our days. Worst thing is that he left with his stained apron on and came back with the same one. He probably should have left it and or make it obvious that it was changed. I also ordered yuca con mojo which tasted good, but was super watered down almost to a mush consistency. I still ate it cause I was hungry and like I said, the taste was good. We have been going here for years. The food reminds of our hometown of Miami. It's a small place with basic Cuban food. My only complaint is being forced to watch CNN on the TV. Owner/cook has no manners when it comes to dealing with clients. I ordered a couple of cuban sandwiches last Saturday to take to a friend's house and you can't imagine my disappointment when I opened the wrapping and found stale bread, no mustard, no pickles, no cheese and some left over pork. When I went back to claim it with pictures I had taken, the owner/cook claimed it wasn't a sandwich from the restaurant when the waitress who had taken my order was standing next to him acknowledging my order. This great little Cuban restaurant is tucked in behind Saigon Paris Bistro. Though it,s a bit difficult to locate, many manage to do so. It is very welcoming and authentic. This is a breakfast and lunch place and we were happy to have breakfast there. While this place was hard to find.... Let's be honest, the best places to eat are usually tucked away. This one was worth the hunt. The staff was friendly even though there was an obvious language barrier. I didn't speak Spanish. I ordered a cafe con leche and a Cuban sandwich. The sandwich was plenty large and filled me nice. For a price of $8, very worth the price. The coffee with milk could have been a bit better. The coffee itself was great, however When I hear con leche I usually assume it's condensed milk. This was not. Not a big deal, just added a bit of sugar and was just as good. I ordered a pastry to go with guava and cheese. I have yet to eat it but it looks amazing. This small casual Cuban Diner is truly special. This food, especially the pork ripiado, is excellent. For sides I love the yuca in garlic sauce and Moro, a mix of black beans and rice. They're ok. I went there so I didn't have to go home and make my own breakfast, while out running errands. I'm from Miami, (I am very much used to Cuban food) and well, this just doesn't cut it. The café con leche was only satisfactory, not amazing. The tostada was also just passable, but the butter had a strange taste to it, almost flavored. Not a flavor that would go with toast or coffee. Visited Fort Myers,FL and had lunch at San Luis Cuban Cafe. It is difficult to find it, the numbers on the building are weird. I went around twice trying to find it and when I was about to leave I found it. I ordered ropa vieja with Moro. The food was really good, my favorite was the moro(congri) one of the best I've had. We stopped here after the beach early in the afternoon and we didn't really order much but I really wish we had ordered more. We weren't that hungry to begin with but we ordered yellow rice, black beans, and croquettes to go. Those croquettes were better than like 80% of those from Miami. It is hidden way back behind Outback and Saigon Bistro. You can easily miss this place! The ambiance is nice and clean with 12 tables. Right behind the Bar Area, ladies are busy cooking! My plan was to try the Friday daily special, Chilindron de Chivo or Goat on Sauce. Last minute, I switched to Palomilla Steak or Bistec Palomilla a la Pancha with black beans on white rice and sweet plantains. It was a lot of food for lunch and delicious. Perhaps next time try the breaded steak or chicken with yellow rice or beef empanadas. The waitress is helpful, courteous and friendly! Overall rating is outstanding. The empanadas are amazinggg!! I would go back to have a beef empanada any day. Everything else I tried was alright. The cuban bread could have been toasted a bit more but it was very tasty. The cuban coffee tasted like regular coffee. My husband also thought the croquetas were cold and not fresh. The server was very nice and acknowledged us very quickly and everything came out in a timely manner. Huge chunks of beef (mildly spiced) and potatoes in a great stew. For my sides I got plain white rice and the sweet fried plantains. The plantains were cooked perfectly, sweet and crispy on the outside with just a bit of chewiness to them. All in all, just a fantastic (and filling) meal....and only $6.99 !!!!
