Today I really didn't want fast food, so I checked out yelp and found this place. There was not a clear menu available on here and the menu on google was outdated. I called and ordered over the phone and picked it up. The owner was super nice and the place was clean. The food was beyond what I expected. The combo was great. Today is Mother's Day and I chose to take my mom somewhere good. I thought we would be taken care of. They didn't take care of us at all. For forty five minutes we waited and watched people that walked in 15 mins after us getting served. When we brought it to their attention the server rudely replied "there were people here before you!" I've been there before with "regulars" and the service was great. Guess you have to know someone to be treated well there. We left and came to Lisa's. They treat everyone the same. Look up Lisa's you will see my great review for them. Side not: I'm not one to place a bad review. I dislike doing it. The truth is there are plenty of good places to get Mexican food. What sets a place apart from the competition is the service. This little place is a gem! It's good homestyle Mexican food in a casual setting. It's a seat yourself when you walk in type of place. There are a limited number of booths, a few tables, and some outdoor bench-style tables surrounded by some plants to make it feel somewhat more private than being exposed to Irwindale Ave. The menu has all your basics that you'd expect from a Mexican food place. My go-to is usually a two item combo plate, always consisting of a hard shell beef taco and one other item that I feel like that day. But their breakfast menu is served all day and the chilaquiles are divine. The taco meat always has a lot of flavor with a balanced helping of lettuce, tomato, and cheese inside. The meat is homestyle; aka like my mom makes her taco meat in a crockpot and then shreds it and tastes JUST LIKE IT! Going through all the other items you can get with the combo, they are all good and pretty standard. None of them stand out specifically as they are neither amazing nor below standard. Whatever you are craving, it should hit the spot. The salsa served with the chips is spicy and very flavorful. My mom has even pointed out that it tastes home-made. Again, I can stress enough how homey all the food is here if you grew up in a Mexican household. For service, they are always quick and speedy. After seating yourself, it only takes a minute or two before they come for your drink order and drop off the menu. You can get in and out of here in under an hour no problem! And you can either pay at the table or walk your bill up to the front counter - you pick. read more

I just happened to be in the area . Was hungry so I went on Yelp . This place had 4.5 stars. I am sorry El Matador but no this is not a 4.5* restaurant. The decor is kind of 50's 60's DINER but I don't rate for decor... but for a 4.5 star I feel I had to mention. I ordered the fish and shrimp in a sauce with mushrooms, bell peppers and onions. Food came out in about 20 minutes which is okay, I assume it means it all made from scratch. Had my dog with me and we appreciated the outdoor seating. Oh yeah I ordered a side of guacamole and the waiter kinda forgotten even though there were only 3 people on the restaurant. So I reminded him which is still okay. So I was munching on that till the food came. Food: needs more flavor, more salt or something, rice was over cooked beans okay not impressive. THE Fish was very fresh , no smell, shrimp seemed fresh as well... so that's a plus. Maybe I just ordered a dish that is not their strongest one? While I am writing this I am hoping the waiter comes back to take my credit card. $18.97 + tip later I am not impressed. I will not come back , most likely because I am not going to be around here but first of all I rather try another Mexican place. I give them thumbs up for finding a huge bucket to give water to my little dog ( I asked for a bowl LOL...). I have been to so many mom and pop's places in Hollywood, Glassel park and Highland park and downtown that I just cannot give it a 4* and feel right about it. Because this place sits off the main street in an industrial complex, it would never occur to me to look for a restaurant in it's current location. Although I only had the chicken flautas, I thought they were good, even though I know that item doesn't necessarily test the full capabilities of the kitchen. As other reviewers noted, this place is small and it does tend to fill up as noon approaches. The service is friendly and attentive, and I like the large number of menu items that they offer. When you find the place, you don't think much of it... It is small and seating is limited, plenty of parking. You should get there early if you go in a group for seating. Most people order to go. Went there for the first time with my gf. Food was very good and arrived quickly. Wet Burritos are very good size and all the right stuff. Taquitos are very good and the Mole Enchilada is very tasty as well.
