I'm from a town about 40 miles south of Bowling Green and I had a great meal at a Los Mariachis location there, and I thought since that was so good, let's do it again; El Mazatlán is probably just as good, and the reviews are positive. I get seated and look at the menu. I munch some chips and salsa. The salsa is thick, which I like, but it also had big leafy pieces of cilantro in it. Those taste soapy to me, but maybe you're one of the people that taste it normally, so that isn't a big deal. Anyway, looking over the menu, I knew I wanted enchiladas. The cheese enchiladas I had at Los Mariachis were the best ones, so I decided to get the Enchiladas Rancheras from El Mazatlán--three cheese enchiladas with red sauce, peppers, onions, zucchini (??), and shredded pork over the top, with lettuce, shredded cheese, diced tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole on the side. The guy brought me another Coke before my glass was a third of the way empty and took my order. Service was not above average nor below par, it was what you'd expect. A guy brings you a menu and drink, takes your order, brings your plate out and refills your drink as necessary. It's not rocket science. The food arrived relatively quickly. The plates were hot. Again, no complaints here. It wasn't super fast, but it wasn't slow, either. And yes, people describe this service as super fast in comparison with a steakhouse, but it should be faster than grilling a steak. All they need to do is roll some combination of filling inside a tortilla and blast it with heat. The bulk of the cooking is already done, that's why it's fast. The food looked pretty good on the plate. The chunks of pork were tasty. The peppers and onions were a little thin, but that's standard practice with most Mexican restaurants I've been to, and the zucchini I thought was odd, but tasty nonetheless. Where the dish utterly failed was when it came time to cut into one of the enchiladas. The enchiladas were small, to the point of being hard to see under the sauce, veggies and pork, they were flat from the cook being stingy with the cheese, and the ends of the corn tortilla had no filling at all. This is in stark contrast to the cheese enchiladas I got from Los Mariachis only days earlier--filled with a generous amount of perfectly melted Monterey Jack cheese. On the side, the lettuce was fresh, the tomatoes were fine, the small big of cheese scattered over the lettuce was to tiny that it makes me wonder why they bothered at all. It added nothing, and they could have at least added that miniscule amount of cheese to the inside of my enchiladas. The sour cream was fine, but the guacamole was lacking. It could have really benefitted from some salt and something to give it some zip, maybe a scoop of pico de gallo mixed in, but it did taste fresh. I also ordered a chicken burrito ala carte. The burrito was better than the enchiladas. It came stuffed with chicken, covered in red sauce and sprinkled with cheese. The chicken was well seasoned, and you could tell it hadn't just been boiled in water and pulled apart to be stuffed into a burrito. Overall, the big wad of chicken made the burrito a tad dry, in spite of the sauce on top. I'd call it fair. Nothing to write home about. If the burrito for $3.99 was the only thing I had to base this review on, I'd probably give the place three stars. As it stands, though, I cannot award El Mazatlán more than two stars. Maybe some of the other dishes are better? I don't know. When I think about how truly bad those enchiladas were, there's no way I'd ever want to find out. I've had better cheese enchiladas from a $1.99 microwave meal in the Save-a-Lot freezer section. read more

Just last night my wife and I had only 30 minutes to eat before a meeting and we were trying not to spend much money, she ordered 2 quesodillas and I ordered 3 shrimp tacos. We were served and had more than plenty of time to eat and our bill was $12.36. There is absolutely no better place for a couple to eat for less than $20.00 with a tip! My coworkers and I also eat here on a regular basis. I would say on average I eat El Maz at least twice a week... and I don't mind a bit. The wait staff is extremely outgoing and super fast. You are served chips and salsa immediately after seating. My wife and I have not tried anything we haven't thoroughly enjoyed yet. The meals are always consistent and delicious. The rice is always fresh and moist, never dry. El Maz is our favorite place to go no matter how much time we have or don't have, or how much money we are trying to spend. read more

The only reason not five stars is that this place's prices have shot up to the highest of any Mexican faire in Bowling Green besides Garcias. $33.00 for two and not including tip. Service was great, food is too; do not think I have to pay that much for rice, beans, and chicken, though. read more

Here you will find the best wait staff in town! Their menu is just fabulous--the largest Mexican menu in town. I know fajitas are a boring dish these days at s Mexican joint, but you have to consider that El Mazatlan makes the best in town. Their salsa is a bit of a disappointment, but everything else works well. Recently renovated, you'll find the bar inviting. Go and enjoy if you haven't already. read more

One great thing about this place is that every dish doesn't come slathered in cheese sauce. They have awesome quesadillas--lots of meat (if you're into that) and vegetables, and crispy. The staff is very friendly, they have decent salsa, and a wide variety of things to choose from on the menu. I've been there twice and will definitely go back. read more

I absolutely love this restaurant.This restaurant looks amazing since it has been remodeled.The staff is friendly, and the food is exceptional.I enjoy the food here and I visit frequently. After I ate here I can say that this restaurant has the best Mexican food in the area without a doubt! I love it because there is a large variety of food at a reasonable price.If you have not tried the fajita Mazatlan, nacho fajitas, or the Cesar quesadilla then you are missing out. Our 2nd time visiting on return trip from Florida for vaca! this place has great food and great drinks and all very very reasonably priced! Wish they had one in the Chicago area!! We may take a 135 mile ride one Sunday to the closest location in Lincoln, IL. Love it! see you this time next year!! read more

What a wonderful find in Bowling Green! Wife and I ate here last weekend for the first time and completely enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. A very extensive menu made it hard to choose a dish, but enjoying a Dos Equies and margarita while making a decision was a great way to start the meal. Excellent selections, large portions, delicious food, good service all at a good price. We will be back. read more

Food for a family of four runs about thirty dollars, and is ready for pick up in about ten minutes. The food seems kind of Americanized as it's covered in cheese and less spicy. But it's still pretty tasty. I would recommend getting your food to-go instead of eating in, because the restaurant itself is a little kitschy and cheap-looking. read more

Good atmosphere, friendly quick service, and large portions. My only complaint is and this complaint seems to apply to a lot of Mexican Dinners is low quality meat. I'm not sure if its the way they treat the meat or what but I could be eating chicken and the texture is not chicken. Tonight I order cuatro de mares which is a Mexican seafood soup, it cost me $17.00 for a bowl that was a Lil bit more than I thought, but again advertised crab and ended up with imitation crab. I know financially cutting cost and increasing profits is good business, but if I ever came across a Mexican place that had quality meat I would be their customer for life. Now to be fair it did have a couple scallops, some small chunks of fish, and a couple of shrimp, but then there was this giant Chile in it, I mean 3-4x the size of my spoon. so i went here after i had a concert with some of my friends, yeah don't ask what we sang. i wasn't super hungry and i had an extra meal plan so i didn't want to go spendo kablamo and get a taco salad fajitas even though it's my ABSOLUTE FAV. anyway, the chips were a little stale, but the salsa was good which is muy importante if you ask me. since i wasn't starving my brains out, i simply asked for a kids cheese quesadilla meal to hit the spot and the waiter said it would be an upcharge and i said h*ck no i don't even want those crusty fries so i just got a plain kids cheese quesadilla with nothing. the quesadilla was honestly barfaroni in a greasy tortilla, but then presto! my friend next to me gave me his oversized steak quesadilla which was sent to us from the heavens above. honestly, i wouldn't even consider it a quesadilla because it had so much meat but thats just my opinion. i only had to pay like three dollars even though i had a lot of meat. but don't get the kids cheese quesadilla unless you want to disappoint your children. read more

the locals know the elmaz has the best mexican in town..the chef special has become a classic which is now ordered and all the mexican restaurants in bg. good margaritas and chimichangas. they have slacked a little bit since their renovations and prices have gone up, but they will always be one of my favorites. read more
