Outstanding Again! El Meson has been revived by new owners Bertha and Freddy. This is one of my go to places for Mexican food in the metro area (and it is just down the road from me). Service = A+ The entire team at El Meson is warm, inviting & friendly. You can't help but smile and enjoy yourself. It comes from the top down --- Bertha and Freddy have hired and managed well! Ambiance = A+ A lot has changed in just the last 6 months. For starters... a brand new expanded bar with lots more table top seating (+ the bar itself was handmade). They also added lots more seating, including brand new booths. New lighting and decor rounds out the list which has really transformed this place into a cozy neighborhood restaurant. Food = A+ Of course the classics are outstanding (tacos, street tacos, burritos, & enchilada) --- but there are some new tastes I have discovered. My new favorite is "Pechuga rellena" -- stuff chicken with bell peppers, mushrooms, onion cheese, etc... all in their signature chipotle sauce. We went with high hopes after a neighbor recommended this place. We're always up for a great Mexican food restaurant, so we set aside our 'date day' to check these guys out. It's in an odd spot, between a tire store and a liquor store, but that's often where you find some of the best places to eat. We walked in and it was a nice, clean space, which just built up our excitement. But the actual highlight of our visit was the host. He was friendly, attentive and just a delight to talk with. We told him it was our first time and he did his best to look after us. Unfortunately, after that is where the visit began to disappoint. We ordered a combo plate to share, figuring we'd be able to try a few things and not break the bank. As we looked deeper into the menu though, we realized the only meat options that came with it were shredded chicken and ground beef. Anything else was a $3 upcharge, but we wanted to try shredded beef, as ground beef shouldn't even be on a Mexican menu in my opinion. Food came quickly and was presented well. Refried beans were the highlight, but the Mole on the enchiladas was just a tomato sauce with no depth at all. The chicken was almost flavorless, premade hard taco shell and the smallest Relleno I've ever seen. Very disappointing. We did enjoy the salsa and chips, which helped to make the meal decent, so we asked for a refill on both. Definitely not food we'd go out of our way for. Already not too impressed, we got the bill and saw they charged us for the chips and salsa, without saying a word. We told our waiter/host and he apologized that we weren't aware, then took it to the owner. So we waited another 5-6 minutes to get an adjusted bill, only to stand around waiting to finally have the owner come to us, acknowledge it was our first time, 'scold' us about how other customers waste food, tell us repeatedly that it says there's a extra charge somewhere on the 6 page menu, then charge us anyway! Perfect way to tell a customer you don't care if they come back. Nearly $40 for a shared meal and 1 soda!?! So, we won't be back and sadly don't recommend others bother to try this place. Money is too tight and there are far better places to spend it. read more

I like to go into a restaurant and ask them what they cook the best. They usually say everything, but if they say this is what we do best, I will order it!! I have never ordered Carne Asada; Freddie says the Carne Asada is good. I ordered it and loved it! My wife had the Stuffed Poblano with Chicken. Finally a spicy marg that was spicy enough for my taste. The Chile relleno was amazing. I love their salsa, it's got a kick. Nice staff, but this food is NOT good. We live very close and decided to satisfy our craving for Mexican here. The staff were all so nice and accommodating and told us about some of the specials they have. We ordered a queso dip and each got a three-taco platter, which comes with rice and beans. Chips and salsa were fine; salsa has a good kick but not too hot. The queso was not what I was expecting and was stringy and gooey, not as melty as it perhaps should be. We received our meals quickly, and they were piping hot, so that's great. It wasn't too busy on a Sunday afternoon and they have a few TVs for watching sports. Unfortunately, the food is just not good. The tacos were less-than-mediocre, dressed with shredded cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The crispy shells got soggy fast from the meat, which was pretty bland and greasy. The staff here are really great, but there is much better Mexican out there, so I can't recommend this spot, which is a shame, because I could literally walk home from here. read more
