My husband I took my parents out for their birthdays and anniversary on Saturday. Since we were seeing a play at the Main Street Theater in Rice Village we decided to try something in walking distance and we all love tapas so we decided on El Meson. It was an early dinner (5:30). The restaurant was clean and well appointed so we had high hopes, especially since we'd been drooling over the menu for the last couple of days. We had nice booth near the window and received service promptly. I had a 1/4 litre of a nice chardonnay, my husband had a La Fin du Monde, my dad had a maker's mark, and my mom opted for margaritas. While she really enjoyed the first, the second one was not as good. As for food, we started with the following tapas: ESPÁRRAGOS COJONUDOS - white asparagus from Navarra with mayonnaise vinaigrette ($12): Now - maybe I should've done research before ordering this because this was just 4 big spears of canned asparagus with a mayo concoction on top. It was terrible. TORTILLA ESPAÑOLA - Spanish potato omelet with olives ($8): This was pretty good. I love tortilla espanola so much that i was determined to learn how to make it when we returned from Spain. While this one was okay, I wouldn't say there was anything exceptional about it. Also, the olives aren't anything special and all of the olives had pits. JAMÓN Y CHORIZO IBERICO DE BELLOTA - free range, acorn feed Iberian ham and chorizo aged 36 months, Manchego cheese ($16): That was not iberico. It was flavorless. I did like how thinly the manchego was sliced. It was made it very easy to eat and i'm sure it's very cost effective for the restaurant. The chorizo was quite good, though. FOIE GRAS - seared foie gras, caramelized apple and pear ($14): The foie gras was SO over done. It tasted burned and there was no unctuous quality to it. It was depressing. The "caramelized apples and pears" were 3 teeny pieces that got thrown in to the pan for a couple of minutes. For entrees, my mom chose the shrimp nachos, dad had the Salmon al Romero, husband had lechon asado, and I had the fish special with goat cheese mashed potatoes and spinach with pine nuts. My dad's salmon was simply under seasoned, but cooked well. He enjoyed it. My husband's lechon was pretty good but nothing to write home about. My fish was over cooked, the potatoes had no goat cheese flavor at all and tasted like instant potatoes that they'd mixed a few potato chunks into along with lots of butter and salt. The spinach was so salty I didn't eat more than a couple of bites. My mother's nachos were the best thing out of all of us. Even though the food was severely disappointing given the price point, the service was spectacular and our waiter took care of every need and brought out a complimentary slice of tres leches cake for the birthdays and it was delicious! He was prompt, polite, got all the orders correct, and was very congenial. We won't be returning to El Meson. It's just not a good value. I don't mind paying higher prices for higher quality food but I think we were just paying for a Rice Village rent. read more

Stopped in to El Meson to sample a few small plates: We ordered several small plates and were thrilled with them all. The service was warm and friendly, very attentive. Park in the garage across the street or take advantage of the valet option. Gazpacho - not what you might expect, this is a smooth combination of cucumber, tomatoes and red peppers. No chunks because this is Gazpacho the way it's made in Seville. It's delicious! Cool, smooth and very flavorful! I would order this again and again. Gambias Al Ajillo - Shrimp with Garlic and EVOO. These were perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Don't forget to soak up some of the juicy goodness in the bottom of the dish with the bread that comes with it. Piquillos de la Tierra - small red sweet and smoky Piquillo peppers stuffed with lamb, raisins and pine nuts. Astonishingly fabulous! Can't wait to go back and order these again! I love this place! The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is great. You have to kid around with the valets and you will see they have a great sense of humor. We always take them a mint when we leave. We really hate the parking in this area but we got over it! We usually get the Tapas. The Pork Belly is awesome and I rarely eat pork. We have also had the Patatas Bravas, Pinchos De Solomillo and several others. We have never had a bad meal. read more

I used to go there often but had not been in a while. Went with my sister in from out of town last June. It is still very good. The talkative, blond blue eyed burly server told us he was a Spaniard. He gave great service and even flirted slightly my sister. Anyway the food! They have the best sangria! I love their wonderful black beans and maduros (sweet plantains).Years ago I had their masitas which was tangy, garlicky sauteed pork, Cuban Style, ropa vieja which is a shredded flank, brisket or skirt steak in a tomato sauce base. Really good enchiladas too! This is a Cuban/Mexican cuisine restaurant after all... First time visit, love this area. Not bad inside with Hispano music. It is evident the people working here don't like bing there. Everyone kept passing by. Eventually a young waitress came by to take the order. Started with two mojitos. They must have been a shortage of mint. Had to ask to bring more. Possibly the worse mojitos ever. We've eaten here before, I'm not sure how I've missed doing a review. I guess I just looped out. We have enjoyed El Meson every time we've been in. The food is consistently delicious. The entrees are wonderful, I cannot pick my favorite. Paella here is a bit pricey as you have to order at least 2 orders and it's about 25 bucks an order. I can do this at home and be just as happy, so I skip the paella. What I really like are the tapas. They don't have as huge a selection as some other places, but what they do have is TASTY. I believe they are serving some of the best Serrano ham in town. It actually melts in your mouth. Other places serve ham flavored shoe leather and tell you it's Serrano. I also particularly love the little lamb meatballs. They're soft in texture and huge on flavor. Sop up all that sauce that comes with them. NOM. Lastly, El Meson serves morcilla, the Spanish blood sausage. Yes, Americans, it sounds gross but it is VERY tasty. Other places seem not to carry this treat. The wine list here is very good and the waiters are knowledgeable. Tell them the wines you like and you will get a good recommendation. Apparently the wines are a passion for the owner. Good thing, too. Service here is spot on and enjoyable. I think that if you give them a try, you will be more than happy with your experience. read more

I'm still wowed by the food from here. That, and I'm counting down until lunch time so I can finish up my paella leftovers. Seriously, it was that good. So, I get off of work on Friday and since I had to work late, I didn't get home until 7. I was hungry at 5:30. Since I happen to be a fabulous wife, I decide not to cheat and snack before dinner and we head off in the general direction of Rice Village since I have a craving for Chinese. I see the restaurant that we were originally going to eat at, but it is packed to the max and has a line outside. At this point, I'm ready to gnaw my hubby's arm off. We see El Meson looking crowded, but not packed and since I'd been meaning to check it out for years, we decided to give it a go. Yes, they have valet that costs money, but if you circle around a few times, there's plenty to be found on the street. For some reason I thought this would be a somewhat dressy place and we would stand out, but we saw people wearing baseball caps at the table, so our fears were alleviated. Sure, there were people a little more dressed up and on dates, but since it is Rice Village, there were no suits to be really found. The moment we sat down, a bowl of warm, homemade salsa was put in front of me and I devoured the whole thing in about 10 minutes. And then got some more. The sommalier came by our table and I knew we were in for a pricey night. She was GREAT at her job--and cute to boot, so I knew the hubby would be a sucker for whatever bottle she recommended. We originally were going to start off with individual glasses, and then it got bumped up to a half bottle, and then a whole bottle. All while being sweet and not pushy at all! Yep, she was a pro! We had our wine which was delicious (though the sangria looked killer!) and chips, so I was a happy camper. We finally took a look at the menu and saw that they had a cheese plate. Predictably, we went with that as an appetizer and though it was a bit overpriced, it was phenomenal. I'm not a fan of paella, but I decided to go in with my hubby on the paella de tierra (he's allergic to fish and I'm hyper nervous about him getting sick again). The paella must be ordered for at least two people, so keep that in mind. The portions are huge and at $20 a person, you're actually each getting about two whole meals apiece, so it works out to be about $10 per meal, per person in the end. The paella is served table side and they did a great job ensuring that we got equal amounts of things. There was plenty of duck, chicken, chorizo, veggies, and who knows what else for each of our plates that we weren't fighting over who got more. Paired with the saffron rice, it was fantastic. With all the flavors infused together, even the pickiest eater won't be taking out the veggies that they don't like. We ended the evening with a dessert wine that was great (again, sommalier makes the hubby spend money), and our check was actually lower than we anticipated. For the price point, I think this food was a little bit disappointing. I got the ropa vieja, which was pretty good. My fiance got some tacos... Two tacos, rice, and beans. $18. We can go down the street and get the same thing for $5. Our waitress was really awkward too. I understand that I'm under 30, and that you have to card me, but you don't need to start talking about how you look like you're 18 (you don't) and that you're about to turn 29. Also, when my friend asks for a food recommendation, for chicken or pork, it's not very personable to say, "I don't eat pork because I'm a lady." I just ordered beef. What does that make me? Went to this restaurant on Mother's Day, at the suggestion of our daughters, who had made a reservation in advance. Was very pleasantly surprised: not a Tex-Mex restaurant, but a Spanish/Cuban restaurant. Excellent service, and an overall very enjoyable experience. For appetizers, I had the Sea scallops wrapped in serrano ham with asparagus, and we all shared the Assorted artisan cheeses served with olives, hazelnuts, and quince paste. As an entree, I had the Cod, jumbo shrimp, and crab meat in parsley and white wine sauce. I can easily see paying twice as much for El Meson's filet mignon and being just as tickled at how awesome it is. Perfectly seasoned and cooked to the prettiest pink, the meat melts in your mouth and chewing becomes completely optional. Before our entrees, the lovely Kat (who is the fantastic Sommallier), offered up a tapas sampler and I even tried the octupus (with ink sauce, eek!). There were Marcona almonds with blue cheese and lavender infused honey...yum, the sweet and salty combination alongside the crunchy/creamy textures was heaven. The red snapper ceviche was delish and completely refreshing along with the fruity Sangria. There's even a sangria margarita (I know, right?), I'll have to try that next time. Now, my only experience with Cuban food comes from eating at El Rey, so I cannot attest to the authenticity of their "Cuban-ness," (I was under the impression it was Spanish while we were eating here, so that shows what I know). Regardless, I loved the food. And thank goodness, the menu as a whole is very moderately priced, which means I'll get to eat here more often. read more

Meh. The red snapper ceviche is stellar, but the rest of the tapas menu isn't very exciting. I just ate there, and I honestly have no recollection of what else I ordered. Obviously not very memorable. Paella isn't quite al dente enough and it lacks the delicious, slightly seared rice at the bottom of the pan. All of the meats/seafood were dry except the pieces of dark meat chicken. It's better than the tapas place down the street, but don't get your hopes up. I have been to El Meson several times, but it had been a couple years since I moved up to Spring. I was in the area today with a friend and thought I would revisit. We sat outside, ordered a margarita and we both ordered nachos (chicken & beef). The nachos were $19 each, so I expected a plate full of nachos. I received 6 nacho chips, with chicken and cheese on each. Same for my friend's beef nachos. I asked where the guacamole and sour cream were. The waitress brought out a 1/2 cup of guacamole and a 1/4 cup of sour cream. These were an EXTRA charge. The 1/2 cup of guacamole was $6 and the 1/4 cup of sour cream was $1. So now each meal was $22.50 (or $3.75 per nacho). When I inquired with the waitress as to the lack of food we received for the $, she walked away saying "I'm NOT talking to you about this". I'm horribly disappointed as I have always enjoyed this restaurant. Sadly, I will not be returning. read more

When I come across a restaurant which bills itself as having more than one type of cuisine I usually get worried. Nobody wants to eat Thai food made by someone who is used to cooking Indian. Not so with El Meson! This place has Tapas, Cuban, or Tex-Mex portions of their menu, and the flavors remain distinct, prepared true to the origin. Seating was comfortable, they have a few large booths as well as tables. I would recommend checking this place out. We left full and satisfied. read more

First restaurant that we ate at while my girlfriend and I were in Houston and it was not a bad way to start off our trip! My aunt and uncle's business partners were quite fond of this place and made sure that we got a little taste of what it had to offer. El Meson is a family-owned Cuban restaurant, and my aunt and uncle's friend seemed to know them pretty well. The daughter and granddaughter of the original chef still works at the restaurant and will check up on all the customers while they're eating! Definitely a +1! We started off with some Chardonnay and appetizers. All of which were done very well. The chips and salsa were alright, but it's typical for these to be filler foods. The item that really wowed me was the calamari in a garlic butter sauce. I don't know how many spoonfuls of that squiddy goodness I scooped up. Not only that, I dipped my bread in the sauce when it was all out! The crab cakes were interesting, but not really my cup of tea. I chose the Chilean Sea Bass for my entree and I felt that it was a great choice! I highly recommend it to anyone having a hard time choosing the right entree. The bass was sweet, as expected, and really juicy and tender. It really was cooked perfectly. It did not take long at all for me to scarf down the whole meal! read more

My family has always been obsessed with Cuban food . . .We have been to pretty much every Cuban restaurant in Houston, and this restaurant is definitely not the best place. However, unlike other Cuban restaurants in Houston, this place has good waiter service, and while it is still considered a casual restaurant, it's a little nicer than the other ones. The prices are also higher. Their Ropa Vieja is the best thing on their menu. The Palomilla is good too. For appetizers I usually get the Nachos Cubanos, which uses fried plantains instead of tortilla chips. I totally dock points for the chips and salsa that they serve (which has nothing to do with Cuba), and their salads are pretty bland. However, I am going to continue to come when I want decent Cuban food at an establishment that won't leave me smelling like garlic and pork for the rest of the day. read more

What happened to El Meson? Didn't this place used to be pretty good? The hubby and I went for lunch recently, and I was kind of surprised to see the same menu as the evening menu. Especially considering it was D-E-A-D inside. I think I counted a total of three tables, yet outside was bustling with shoppers. The service was good, but man, the food fell flat. I ordered the chicken soup and it was pretty thin. Just a few sad looking little potatoes and a couple of carrot slices served with two small bone-in chicken pieces. The hubby ordered the picadillo, which came out slightly watery and short on flavor. I've made better and I can't cook. Overall, I think they're overcharging for sub-par food. Love this place! The Sangria is fantastic and refreshing but has quite a kick. I found myself catching a bit of a buzz after a couple. For light bites sample from the Tapas menu. The Pineapple Crabcakes are to die for, I don't think I have ever had crab served so delicious. We also ordered the mushrooms sauteed with Serrano Ham, it was delicious. The bone in chicken soup was comforting and I can see myself ordering it the next time I have a cold or flu. Giving a place one star is not something I take lightly. A waiter making me wait 15 minutes with an empty drink is also not something I take lightly. At no point should customers be wondering where the waiter is. Everyone knows the secret to being a good waiter is to get your customers drunk! The menu was so large that I was kind of overwhelmed but the food ended up being fine except that the queso tasted like nacho cheese from a baseball game. Not to mention of course that it took him 30 minutes to take our order. Then after we ate, we waited another 20 minutes just to have to FLAG DOWN THE WAITER in order to pay. Not to mention that everything is overpriced. I really don't have anything good to say about this place except that the valet was only $4. read more

I guess I was under the impression this was a Cuban restaurant. It isnt. Its Mexi-Cuban. The salsa and chips they serve are pretty good, but I was expecting fried plantains and chimichurri sauce. The mojitos tasted premixed, no muddled mint and no sugar cane. I have come to accept that you only get a real mojito in Miami! The strangest thing was that the typical Cuban dish consisting of skirt steak criollo, black beans and rice with plantains was no where to be found on the menu! Enchiladas, tacos, chicken, skirt steak with toppings. But no typical Cuban plate. We asked the waiter if they served that and he said they could make it for us. The steak was prepared diferently than I expected but it was tender and delicious. The black beans and rice were nothing special, and the plantains maduros were good but I wont be running back anytime soon. Parking situation in the Village is horrible. read more

Absolutely love this place! I visit here any chance I get! They have Cuban, Spanish, and Tex-Mex options on the menu. The atmosphere is nice and cozy and the staff are always friendly. They offer a wide range of Tapas, all of which are very yummy! A few of my favorites are -Bacon wrapped Dates -Champiñones Al Ajillo -Pork Belly -Croquetas De Jamón Y Pollo I am personally not a huge Caesar salad fan but I do enjoy the one they have here. It's not too overwhelming like some Caesar salads I've had in the past. Paella is also very good, keep in mind you have to order a minimum of 2 orders of the same kind of paella. I'm allergic to shellfish so the only seafood item I have had was the salmon, really nice flavor! It's hard to pick one entree that I like the best lol. It all depends on my mood for the day For Chicken I love the Pollo Al Ajillo, for Pork it's a tie between Lechon Asado and Masitas, You also can't go wrong with the Ropa Vieja ! Most of the entrees come with a dinner salad before the meal unless it's one of the Tex Mex options. Definitely recommend the Sangria and if you love wine this is the place for you! The wine list has an amazing selection and the staff is very knowledgeable in helping you pick the best wine for you! They don't have an actual children's menu but they do offer child's plates you just need to ask the server what they have for the kids. I recommend this place to everyone. I've never had a bad experience and the staff is awesome. It might be best to make a reservation for Friday and Saturday nights but even if you don't you can always grab a drink and wait at the bar for your table. Enjoy! read more

My boyfriend and I made reservations for dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant was about 75% full so not needed if you've worked up an appetite from shopping in the village. Ambiance was casual - "couples retreat" meets "where do I take 2 sets of in-laws visiting". They also have a private room that looks to hold up to ~30. Wine list is extensive but waitstaff was happy to provide recommendation. Meal surpassed our expectations. We had ceviche before the meal - delicious. I took a queue from other Yelp reviews and ordered the Ropa Vieja - I wish it was a person so I could marry it (don't tell my bf). He had the Cuban-style skirt steak and all but licked the plate. Many courses going on here and they bring out the food fast (almost too fast) so come hungry - albeit starving. What a wonderful hidden gem El Meson is...until next time. read more

I think it could stand to be a bit cheaper, but definitely a good place to check out. I haven't tried the tapas, only the entrees. I went for dinner on a Thursday night and must say I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and flavor of their food. I ordered the Bacalao (cod fish) with rice, beans and sweet plantains. My meal was delicious! My boyfriend had been there before and ordered some type of fish, which he seemed to enjoy. we also ordered the hand shaken margaritas and I must say they were good, just not strong enough! They needed to be stronger for 5 stars. The service was good and the ambiance was nice and laid back. I love the taste and quality of everything I've eaten at this restaurant. Very unique items well prepared. The food keeps bringing me back. The hostess was very kind and attentive to our special needs. The service was decent today although it started out a little rough. The last time we ate there the seevice was very bad. Our waiter ignored us for a very long time while he served other tables that were seated after us. My problem with this place is the lack of ambience and decor! This place needs to have a total overhaul, and a make over from top to buttom throughout. It's uninviting, lacks charm, appeal and direction. A restaurant with this kind of prices should have white crisp tablecloths instead of the bare ugly cheap tables and dented scratched chairs. The bathroom doors are a sore sight of decades old scratches and lack of paint. Inside is even worse. A gas station has newer, cleaner equipment and fixtures. Absolutely horrendous. read more

We went here on a friend's recommendation with no real expectations. What a great place El Meson is! We started with several tapas and they were all delicious. We started with Pork Belly-AAA MAAAZZ IIINNG! The pork bellies were cooked with a sweet sauce and pear slices. The sugars had carmelized on the top and made them all the more delicious. The Serrano Ham with Manchega was amazing. The plates also had imported olives and candied fruit. The last tapas we tried was the Red Snapper Ceviche-- I am not a big fan of ceviche, but this was wonderful! Then came our entrees. They were VERY large and FULL of FLAVOR. My hubby ordered the Solomillo Empanizado. It didn't look very good, but the first bite was HEAVEN! The pork was cooked wonderfully and the plantains were sweet and tasty. I had the Ropa Vieja. It was a stew like meal with beef in a red sauce. Both dishes were very delectable. The servers were very friendly and the whole feel of the restaurant was laid back. The prices were very modest in comparison the the amount of food we received. And, all the dishes were presented beautifully. We will definitely add this to our list of places to come to next time we are in Houston. read more

I've been eating here for 22 years and it has never once failed to impress me. Good service, amazing food, really great margaritas. They renovated the restaurant a couple years back and it now also has a great atmosphere and interior. I'd recommend the masitas, the pork is perfectly cooked and seasoned and the plaintains it comes with are always the best texture and sweetness. read more

Extremely nice servers and everything was delicious!! The flan was the best one I have had in a long time, 10/10 experience.

I visited this restaurant again, after writing my first review, and I'm glad I did because the service was much better, like in any other good establishment and the food was great, as usual. Me and my wife had identical dishes - Enchiladas Al Gusto with their wonderful cheese enchiladas. What impressed me was the tortilla 'puff' covered with chile con queso which they serve in the first part of the dish, along with guacamole and small salad. I could find such puff only at the few Mexican restaurants and I'm glad they they serve it there, too. Their sangria was great, as usual, one of the best sangrias in town. All in all, a very pleasant dinner, indeed, and the upgrade to 5 'stars' rightfully earned. read more
