This restaurant is fantastic. We walked in the door sat down not 15 seconds we were served warm salsa chips and dip. Good location clean and very good service so far. This is my new favorite place. Not just because the food came hot, tasty and in under 8 minutes, but because the decor is lovely and the boothes are comfy. The seating is situated in a way that provides a little bit of privacy, which makes it perfect for a date or if you're eating alone and don't want to stand out. Plus you are given your ticket to pay at the front, so there's no waiting. The only bad thing are the restrooms, which could use some work and are seriously outdated. read more

I like the layout and the idea of a guy and his guitar serenading the diners. However, the music is a tad annoying, the food isn't great, the drinks are wrong and our waitress disappeared. To my understanding, a house margarita uses sweet and sour mix. A Texas style margarita nixes the mix and replaces it with fresh lime juice and adds orange liquor. A top shelf margarita uses lime juice instead of sour mix and upgrades the orange liqueur to Grand Mariner. I'm no bartender, but I'm certain the top shelf and Texas do not include sour mix. The waitress assured me that they are exactly the same and do include a sour mix base. I refuse to believe this! Aside from that... I ordered two pork tacos. The pork itself was tasty. It was served with a dish of pico that looked to be only diced tomatoes and onion. The waitress was spot on for a bit but disappeared for what seemed like an hour. The bad part was that it was after someone in our group asked for her check. She was finished eating and had an empty glass. Once the rest of our glasses and pitchers were empty, we asked the hostess to find or replace her. All in all, I would have had a better time at a different restaurant! read more

I can't even tell you how awful my tacos were. I ordered two crispy tacos. One chicken which had a paste of something pink, one wilted piece of lettuce. If there was cheese and tomato I didn't find it. Then they wrapped it in foil and it ended up being a steamed soft taco. Just awful. The beef was equally bad except I could tell it was meat. Fortunately the rice, beans, chips, salsa and cheese sauce were very good. My husband ordered three shredded beef tacos and though there was nothing much in his either, they were in a carton and not as soft as mine though not really crispy. Very disappointing. read more

This is the best Mexican in Memphis. Not this chain, but this particular location. They are on a different level. Service is perfect 9 out of 10 times. Food is consistently great. Combination #5, chicken cheese n rice, and the fajitas of any kind are my top 3. I want to add to my review since I went there yesterday. The prices keep creeping up bit by bit. $32 for a small plate of fajitas, chicken cheese n rice, a water, and a coke is a little on the high side for Mexican food comparatively. Completely forgot about this great little spot, but remembered since El Porton closed to move across the parking lot. Food was fantastic and service was great. Drinks were also excellent. Empanadas (beef) were fantastic. Also enjoyed arroz con pollo and the quesadilla Mezcal which was packed with fresh seasoned vegetables. I went here last night for a late night craving for churros! They pretty much ruined it. I just wanted plain churros with cinnamon and sugar. They didn't tell my boyfriend that it came with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Which got soggy pretty fast and the churros were also cold like we got the left overs. I've been to almost everyone of there locations and always had great experiences and high expectations because the food is always good. But on this Sunday I had a waitress that sat down after she took our orders came back for the check and ask my daughter if she wanted a refill. Never asking me or my mom if we wanted more tea or coffee. I reported to the manager and he advised he would speak with her and that was all. Absolutely worst Mexican I've had anywhere. I went for lunch and ordered queso fundido and the Dinner Plate. The food was cold and the meat tasted like canned Hormel corned beef hash. The waiter brought me my check and asked if I wanted a box. When I said no, he just left. I had eaten virtually nothing but chips and salsa. I got up, went to the register to pay, and the woman asked me if I enjoyed my food. I said, "Not really ..." My bill was $19.83. She kept looking down, handed me $.17 and walked off without a word. The food at El Mezcal is very plain, not very much flavor. The only reason I keep going is because my guy loves the nacho fajitas here. So far I had tried the chicken with rice and that is literally all you get which isnt enough if your hungry. The chile poblanos have a refrigerated taste, I do not care for. The quesadillas are soggy, but the steak with shrimp dish is so far the only thing I really liked. The shrimp were ok tasting but the steak was really good. I picked up takeout at lunch to see if there was good Mexican in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I guess I will have to keep looking. I have been to a few other Mexican restaurants in town, like Las Tortugas,Taqueria la Guadalupana, Swanky's Taco Shop, On the Border, Blue Coast Burrito, and El Porton (listed in descending order of satisfaction). I would put El Mezcal at next to the bottom of these for food. (Since I didn't eat in, I can't speak to the dining atmosphere.) I ordered a number 1 lunch, which I believe was supposed to be a taco, fried beans and chile rellenos. First, the chile rellenos were served swimming in soupy, refried beans. The taste was off, like plastic. I tried the one bite and stopped eating. The beef taco was served in a hard shell corn tortilla with lettuce and was a little greasy on the outside. I also had a bite of the shrimp quesadilla. This was a flour tortilla with shrimp and cheese folded over to look like a big taco. Didn't care for the freshness of the shrimp. Didn't think the shrimp and cheese flavors worked well together. However, the refried beans and rice were enjoyed by my preschool-aged child when served with sour cream. Disappointing. I would say the lunch "deals" are not bad if you are hungry and have to subsist on something, but I would not go for the enjoyment of the food. Maybe I ordered the wrong choices, but if a Mexican restaurant can't make a good taco, what can they do right? read more

Worst experience ever tonight. Sat at the bar and ordered a "top shelf" patron margarita. The guy pours it from a random jug. As you can imagine it tasted like garbage. When I asked him if he was sure it was Too shelf Patron, he responded "I don't know I didn't make it". Didn't offer to make it right or give me another drink. I've been a frequent customer and have had varied degrees of food and service some good and some just okay. Today was different. The server was pleasant and very timely. I ordered cheese enchiladas and my wife had taco salad. The taco salad was not up to par. The lettuce appears to have been washed but not allowed to dry and made the salad runny. However, I'd like to say our server was Excellent. Highly recommend for white cheese dip , appetizer the chicken wings (order dry) , cheese enchiladas, and the pollo chicken with cheese sauce. The Marquita's are 8 out of 10 beer is cold. Give them a try. read more

Their menu didn't mention the mushrooms either, and I hate anything with them, so it was a very unpleasant surprise. It was our first stop at a Mexican joint since moving to Memphis from Colorado. The best part of the meal was the side of pico and the chicken soup. The chile rellano and chile poblano were not edible. Both dishes completely lacked flavor. I am not even sure what cheese they used...it tasted like plastic. The batter on the poblano tasted like it was frozen for months on end or was made from play-doh. There was also abundance of oil running across the plates. I've been going to El Mezcal for 13 years. I haven't found a Mexican restaurant I prefer more than this place. The food is always great, and if you're ever unhappy, the staff always makes it right. Everyone there has a great attitude and they understand that the point is to have a good time. Guava margaritas are wonderful and I can't find a better taco salad anywhere!
