I got the tacos pescados which were tasty, but a bit overpriced for the size. At $17 I expected more than 3 teensy tacos with just halibut, shredded lettuce and guac. I could have easily made that at home for half the price. The chipotle sauce was good but again not mind blowing. My friend had the carne asada plato which was actually a decent entree size for $17. Overall the food was good but not worth the price tag. Then again it's upper Queen Anne so not totally unexpected. I have been to Mezcalaria Oaxaca's other locations for their strong margaritas, so this was my first time actually coming in for food! My friend and I were craving tacos, and this place definitely satisfied that need. We both ended up getting the Carne Asada street tacos, which was about $8 for 3 of them, while a little pricey it was so satisfying! The service was decent and decor was nice. It was a little weird that we were seated right next to a row of kitchen sinks - they should cover that area up. I'll hopefully visit again in the future, to try their other food out! The chips and guacamole here are definitely on my Top 5 list. The chips were served fresh out of the fryer, and when I dipped them in the fresh, not-salty guacamole, they melted in my mouth! Do not skip the chips and guac here!! I ordered the chicken enchiladas, which were more like taquitos! They were okay, but the refried beans topped with queso fresco was the real winner on my dinner plate. I also really enjoyed the salsa bar here, which is a rare thing for me to say about most Mexican restaurants in Seattle, or even Washington. The spiciest was a red salsa, which was nice and smoky. The pico de gallo had huge chunks of jalapenos and the salsa verde was spicier than it was sour. The mild red salsa was the only one that was lacking. We'll call that a balanced four-star; using that terminology, Mezcaleria is not a balanced four-star in the slightest. Its food is fairly mediocre: the only time I've eaten a meal here, I ordered the enmoladas, which were served in a mole I would charitably describe as "lacking kick" and crema Mexicana that made the rest of the dish soggy. The margaritas go a little too heavy on the tequila and a little too light on everything else. The ambience in the back room, where you'll probably go if you're either eating a full meal or going with a party of four or more, is similar to that of a Mexican restaurant in which the dishes cost half as much as they do here. But the chips. Holy mother of God, the chips. Mezcaleria Oaxaca's chips are the best tortilla chips I have ever had. They are so far above and beyond any other chip that it's hardly fair to even include anything else in the same sentence. These are manna from the heavens. These are Michelangelo's David, if David were made of processed corn instead of marble and served with guacamole. These are "Mr. Brightside" played at a party after four drinks. A reader might scoff at how something as perfunctory as tortilla chips would single-handedly save Mezcaleria's rating; said reader would without a doubt change their mind after even one piece of their delectable, perfectly-salted heaven. I would not recommend Mezcaleria Oaxaca for a normal meal: chips do not an entree make, no matter how transcendental. I would wholeheartedly recommend Mezcaleria Oaxaca for a happy hour. I was not impressed...with how long it took to get seated. In fact, my friends and I waited over an hour (after we had been told 20 minutes), and we watched every single party get seated before us (including people who came in after us). At the point I was ready to blow up at the host, we decided to just sit at the window on stools (which had been full when we arrived) instead of wait for a table any longer. But, I was able to forgive that nonsense because the food was THAT GOOD. After I ate about a bucket of chips with salsa, I ordered the chicken mole, which is FANTASTIC. I licked my plate clean, and that's not just because I was super hungry. Whatever they use in that recipe (I suspect crack), it definitely works. The chicken was tender (you can also opt to get ribs), and the mole was thick and delicious. It didn't look like a huge portion, but it was definitely filling. Margaritas are also quite delicious, but I would stay away from the spicy one, whatever it's called. It's TOO spicy going in AND out. It's only street parking in Queen Anne (what else is new?), and the wait can be long, so get here somewhat early, especially if visiting on a weekend. Hands down the best mexican food i've ever tasted in my life. I don't even remember where I got my mexican food cravings fixed before coming here. You can tell they use high quality beef for their dishes. The taco carne asada was tender, flavorful and juicy. Their enmolada was also super juicy and nice. As an avocado lover, I had to order extra guacamole and chips. Their guac is the best in town. They put more jalopenos than other places, and it brings out refreshing, spicy kick to creamy guacamole. They bake their own chips at the restaurant and it taste really good. Most importantly, I was glad to find as health concious mexican restuarant. If you put a little effort in choosing the menu, you can easily have a healthy meal packed with protein and less sodium compared to other mexican restuarants. This restaurant is great if you have a late night craving for tamales. We came here around 10 p.m. and the traffic had kind of died down. We and along with another two couples were here. The restaurant is spacious and I think it is pretty nicely decorated. The salsa bar is fantastic where you can get your own different types of salsa. We ordered guacamole and chips and they were terrific, though the portions are on the smaller side. The chicken tamales were delicious. It was a little sweet and savory and the masa was terrific. The corn shell was so yummy where it kind of melts in your mouth. It is on the more expensive side when it comes to Mexican food but to sit down at a nicer restaurant, it is well worth it. read more

True fact: Writing an entertaining review of an excellent restaurant is challenging. So I'll just say this -- I like this place a lot. The cocktails are excellent. I had the Michilada (nice and spicy, one of the better Michiladas I've had and certainly the best I've had in Seattle so far) and one of the Mezcal cocktails that I can't remember the name of, though I do remember it had tamarind in it. Good stuff. My friend got the sangria, and that was underwhelming. Skip the sangria. I ordered the red pozole, and I loved it. Guys, I'm a pozole snob after having eaten delicious homemade pozole for years, but this place gets it right. It's got a kick too, which I appreciate. The tacos looked good too, though I didn't try any. Tortilla chips and guac was good, though not too memorable. I ended up eating a bunch of the chips without the guacamole. I think I prefer my guac more avocado-y than what was given to us. The servers and host were super nice, as was the bartender, though it was a very busy Friday night and she looked like she could use some backup. Large portion sizes for only $11 with a perfectly seared steak, handmade corn tortillas, and a robust sauce. Their salsa bar in the back is so much fun and each are perfect. Great, fun, friendly service, fun atmosphere, good music that is not too loud. Nothing on the menu is more than $15. The bar is well stocked too with a lot of Mezcal I would like to try. The food from Mezcalaria Oaxaca brought me back to sitting in a restaurant in the city of Oaxaca de Juarez eating a delicious meal while staring out at the beautiful old buildings made from green colored volcanic stone. I haven't thought about Oaxaca in quite a long time but fond memories began to surface with each bite. When I think of food from different regions of Mexico, it's not often I've come across food from the state of Oaxaca. If you've never been, Oaxaca is in southern Mexico between Guerrero and Puebla to the west, Veracruz to the North, Chiapas to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the south. I remember having some amazing tamales with mole while there but I wanted to try something different. I was going to save the tamales for another time when I was more hungry. We ordered our food to pick up over the phone. The staff on the phone were very nice and told us that it was okay if we ordered some of the items from the dinner menu and others from the lunch menu. We ordered their chips salsa and a side of refried pinto beans with it. It was delicious. They had several types of salsa at the salsa bar as well so we could try some different kinds. The chips were warm which is always nice and the salsa was tasty and not watery. We ordered several main dishes and shared them so we got to taste everything. The Tacos Carne Asada are small tacos with sliced beef served on a corn tortilla, with onions, cilantro and salsa roja. Put cilantro on a taco instead of lettuce and you have me for life. The meat was cooked perfectly and it was juicy. The Gringas Oaxaqueñas is made of barbecued pork served in small corn tortillas with quesillo, pico de gallo and salsa verde. I really liked the salsa verde and thought that added a great flavour to the meat. With both of the tacos dishes, the tortillas are small and may not be enough for one person depending on your appetite. The Carne Asada Plato is made of thin sliced beef steak, served with rice, beans, pico de gallo and tortillas. This was very tasty and most of us liked this the best. The pico de gallo was fresh and there was a fair serving of rice and beans. I liked the taste of the beans as well. They have a huge menu of Mezcal to try including flights. Some of the drinks looked amazing but we were working, so I will have to try them one day after work. Travel and Leisure magazine named them one of the best Mexican restaurants in the country a few years back so that's saying something. I liked the food and will definitely be back! read more

I'm going to go with 4 stars - because the food IS good and the options for Mexican food on Queen Anne are dwindling with Tenoch and Jalisco gone and now I hear La Luna is for sale). The pluses: Food seems more traditional in that they're not all laden with cheese and refried beans. Everything we've had was good - the ceviche, the mole, the tacos, the enchiladas etc. The Mezcal options are super; I guess Mezcal makes everything better. Portions aren't overly large - a plus for my diet, but also a minus... The minuses: as you're seated you're asked if you want chips. If you say yes, you just spent 6 bucks. Would you like more tortillas with your relleno? $2 bonus on your bill. The nickel and diming runs rampant here. The food is not cheap for the portions you receive. If you're seated in back, it can get crazy noisy. There is nothing to damp the noise and if there are families back there it can be hard to hear your own tablemates. So I guess the bottom line for us is that we'll go here when we're really in the mood for this type of cuisine, or have a hankering for mezcal and we're feeling flush in the pocketbook. read more

I went for dinner tonight and was a little disappointed with the service. I think our server's name was Karina. We got seated at a long community table and then another couple sat down next to us. We were in between two parties. I was kind of hesitant with sitting at the long table when the server asked us when we arrived. She later comes back and asks the couple next to us if they wanted a two person table and they left. I was just confused as to why they got seated after us and yet still got a different table when we were first. A different two person table opened up and I asked if we could take it. She said another party was already waiting. It was just too loud sitting in between two larger parties to actually hear the person across from me so I kind of had to shout. Bummer city :/ I was just disappointed that we were kind of overlooked. The party next to us also had their checks ready for some time before a server came by. This was only one bad experience out of the few times I've gone. I hope they can continue to improve in their service because I really do love the food. read more

Got the Barbacoa de Cabrito (slow roasted goat), Gringas Oaxaqueñas, pork mole and chips. Chips were nice an fresh. Salsa bar (seemed odd to have such in a "classy" bar restaurant) was stocked with forgettable salsa. Goat was very tough and largely bland. Pork was also tough, served lukewarm and overly sweet. Mole - I've had better from a jar. Caddy margaritas were Good. Ambiance is bad. Sitting at bar is the best bet. Front dining room has every seat next to high traffic areas. Rear dining room is like sitting in a shipping container - there are no windows. Rear dinning room is also popular with families (this is cool). On a weeknight it was about 60% full. Service was fine. I don't get the hype. Sure it's different than the typical retried beans & cheese enchiladas places. But it's nothing to write home about. read more

Wow! Sister restaurant impressed me tonight. Loved loved loved the Gringas Oaxaquinas. BBQ pork tacos - so so delicious with the pineapple slaw. We also had the Carne Asada Tacos and Enchiladas con Mole. The Enchiladas were paired with a skirt steak and it was delicious. I think I prefer the regular pork mole with beans, rice, and tortillas to the enchiladas mole, but they were still tasty. Margaritas are always done right at the Oaxaca restaurants. Good tequila... Always love the salsa bar as well. The decor was similar to that of the Ballard location, but the lighting was cooler her... A very long restaurant with cool shadow boxes that lit up our side table. I have to say, besides the great food, Oaxaca has great service that strives on teamwork. There is always someone to take care of you. If you want to enjoy some authentic, delicious Oaxacan food - Mezcaleria is for you. I'm stunned by the number of negative reviews based on the reviewers inaccurate perceptions that Mexican food is a singular category of food without regional differences or styles. Or worse yet, that Americanized Mexican food is the measure of authenticity. As a native California girl, I grew up on Mexican food and the refried pinto beans here are heaven sent. The "white" rice is fried and very tasty. My favorite dishes are the taquitos (baked enchiladas) and the halibut tacos. Bonus points for the exceptional fresh homemade tortillas. The service is always warm and welcoming. My husband and I have been here for date night, brought the kids earlier in the day and often get take out, too. They also have gladly accommodated my son's food allergy. It's a small restaurant, so not the best place for a large group - but that's hardly a ding. 5 stars! read more

There are multiple tables outside in a covered space out front and a few more in back, as well as inside seating. Tables are always clean, and they check in frequently to make sure you've got everything you need. Tortillas are hand made and always fresh as are the salsas. I really wanted to try La Carta de Oaxaca in Ballard, but I was super excited to find out that they have a sister shop in Queen Anne, score! We stopped by late, around 8pm, on a Friday night. We were immediately greeted by a host who advised a 30 minute wait. We were seated at the window in less than 5 minutes. It took a minute to be greeted by our waiter, but the host noticed and immediately sent someone over. The decor is really cool for a Mexican restaurant. There are really awesome pictures hung around and it is very modern. No gaudy sombreros here. Of course we started with the chips and guacamole. I know a few people are upset that you have to pay for chips, but honestly I would want their guacamole anyway so I didn't mind. We also enjoyed the salsa bar, which was basically 4 large bowls of salsa at a small station in the back of the restuarant. We enjoyed all of the salsas and the chips were hot and delicious as well. I also quite liked the guacamole, it was a bit salty which I appreciated. I would have loved a bit more lime, but I am a lime whore when it comes to mexican food. I had the Gringas Oaxaqueñas, which were little barbeque pork tacos. They were quite delicious and I was tickled with the lime that came on the side (as previously mentioned). My husband had the Tacos Dorados which were pork filled taquitos. They were smothered in black beans and guacamole. They were very crispy and had a bit of a rootbeer flavor, it was very interesting. Would I dine here again, absolutely! The portions are a bit on the small side, but you can try a lot of different dishes that way. My boyfriend and I have been here twice now. The food is good! The chips come out fresh and HOT. Guacamole and salsas are super tasty - the salsa verde may be the best I've ever had (I like that it's a little spicier than most verdes I've had). There is a self-serve salsa bar in back that we only knew about from reading yelp reviews; the first time we went our server definitely did not mention it to us, even though we ordered chips. So far, I've tried the tacos al pastor and the enchiladas mole. The mole sauce was yummy - rich, and not too sweet - and the steak was cooked perfectly. However, I think I preferred the tacos I got on my second visit. On the lunch menu you get 3 for $7, and the tortillas look smaller than you'd probably expect, but they are filled to the brim, and the flavors are vibrant. I want to try ALL THE TACOS! They all sound pretty fantastic. Good selection of tequilas and Mexican beers. On both visits I got the "Tequila Caliente" margarita, which has jalapeno in it or something. I'll preface this review with the fact that my Mexican heritage and life experience have included a long history of amazing Mexican food so I am always a tough critic. But I stopped by this restaurant due to the amount of folks that were dining there on a Thursday night. Seemed like a safe bet. I ordered their self advertised house specialty, Mole with chicken, with white rice and two tortillas,cost $20. My order was mistakenly not put in and after 30 minutes, no food. I was seated near open cooking area. When I saw that they were starting to clean the grill and wash pots and pans I stopped a server who had walked by me several times and asked about my meal. She offered to take my order. She finally realized I'd ordered a 1/2 hour earlier. So, I asked for some chips while I waited yet again. They came 20minutes later with my food order. One small chicken thigh with white rice. The food was served cold. No server ever came back to send it back. So being famished by then I ate it. When server returned with my bill she asked how the food was- I mentioned the coldness of the food. She chuckled and said sorry. The mole was watery and flavorless. The rice steamed. Both mole, chicken and rice could have used a little salt. The owner was told about my concern and took five dollars off my bill and offered me a beer. I passed on the beer. The bill and included a $5 charge for a small basket of chips. So not a great experience and food was disappointing. I had the barbacoa de cabrito - the goat was tender and very spicy, but the dish is supposed to come with black beans and there were 0 beans on my plate, just a pool of black liquid where the beans should have been. The food came out extremely quickly (faster than our drinks, including water) and the service was good overall. Try them all if you haven't, I love the verde salsa. - I despise mezcal (smoked agave - tequila) but some people love it, especially if you love peaty flavors, so consider it for the experience. Now for entrees, I recommend: - Estofado con Pollo - Tacos al Carbon - Everything else, really... you can't go wrong. SERVICE The service here is always friendly, prompt and communicative. It's fun to note that the photography around the restaurant are actually all connected to the restaurant in some way. For instance, you'll see a photograph with smoke coming out of the ground -- that's how they make the mezcalaria, by smoking the agave underground. Whoa. PRICES Reasonable and affordable, especially for the quality of flavors you get. PORTIONS Don't expect the gigantic sea of refried beans and rice here on the side of your main dish. I know this restaurant as Mezcaleria Oaxaca based on the sign out front. My husband and I were close to regulars at MO, finding it an authentic Mexican spot in our neighborhood. We attempted to dine there last night, arriving at 5:52 pm to be exact, just before the end of Happy Hour at 6:00 pm. Our plan was to have one HH drink then roll into our full/usual dinner of guacamole, ceviche and pork tacos. However, the bartender refused to honor HH, claiming HH had already ended in his system. Whatever that meant. He didn't flinch at reality of what time it actually was, just kept repeating his rehearsed and bogus line about his system. Clearly, this was a first world problem, but our tab there is always $100+, and if a restaurant advertises HH till 6 pm, then last call should be at 6 pm and no earlier. We were so annoyed by this bizarre arrogance that we bailed and went elsewhere. This restaurant isn't all that, and it's far from an inexpensive meal. Guess our business wasn't important to them. Chips and salsa or guacamole are really expensive, and at their prices, they should have free refills on chips. The main foods to order here are tacos and/or enchiladas. This place does not disappoint. I've tried several items on the menu, and all are very delicious. The Entomatadas Verdes is my absolute favorite. The meat is tender, and the balance of heat of the tomatillo with the cooling crema is perfect. The staff is super friendly and quick. So it was an "interesting" dining experience. Food wasn't really memorable. Got chips and guacamole and toquitos. They only had communal seating for a table of four. So it was a little bit tight and awkward at first since the people next to us had their food spilling into our side of the table. Also, that type of seating confuses the wait staff, so we didn't get waited on for awhile since it doesn't look like a new party is there. Coming from California and the South, the food was nothing special. Not bad, but not great either. Guac wasn't super flavorful and the toquitos were crispy but nothing had much of a kick. read more

REVIEW BASED SOLELY ON GLUTEN CONTAMINATION FOR CELIACS AND THE GLUTEN SENSITIVE: We went here yesterday around 4/4:30PM because of the great reviews from Celiacs on the "Find Me Gluten Free" app. Unfortunately I can't add a good one to the mix... The environment is chill (a little Mexican-style hipster), and I was so excited to eat here. Since I was diagnosed (I'm very severe) over a year ago, we haven't had any luck with Hispanic foods--my favorites--but with the positive reviews from claiming Celiacs on the app, I was hopeful. We asked the server before ordering if they could handle a severe Celiac. She hesitated and I should've taken that as a "no", but she explained that everything was gluten free outside of flour tortillas which they do make in-house. They use the same pan for grilling tortillas (corn and flour) but she'd note the allergy and it would be cleaned out. I went against my gut, but I'm glad I could make the delicious sacrifice to be able to write this review. So far it seems like a moderate contamination. With a family of 5, 2 of us are Celiacs, 1 is gluten-sensitive (migraines), and the other 2 we don't take chances with and order all GF for the table. With that said, I ordered the shrimp tacos minus Pico (can't eat onions), my children ordered cheese quesadillas, and my migraine-suffering partner ordered chicken enchiladas--all with corn tortillas. (Supposedly GF) Chips and tomate dip were provided for free. I tried a small bite of a quesadilla (possibly the contaminant) and the chips and dip, in addition to my tacos with rice, but I can't pinpoint which was the culprit directly, although I'm sure the quesadilla but was a bad idea... I gave it 2 stars because it is delicious, our server was kind and thoughtful, and I'm hoping it was a one-time mess-up in the kitchen. The server came out as they were preparing our food and let us know that the cooks cleaned all the surfaces and changed their gloves. My confidence was redeemed, only to now be in pretty severe lower abdominal pain with the worst yet to come... I hope my review helps a Celiac either avoid this place or make a smarter ordering choice if you dare to take the risk. Best Wishes, Sara read more
