Traditional Food from Michoacán and Southern Mexico. There is no TexMex here! They recently celebrated their 30th anniversary. You can still find Mom and Dad cooking in the mornings. From Green and Red Mole to Quail topped Enchiladas and Handmade Corn and Flour Tortillas. The food here is phenomenal. This place is so close to our house & we had been wanting to try it for a while on a recommendation from a friend! Please be advised the building is a little worse for the wear but don't let it deter you from trying the fabulous food. Upon entry we were greeted & advised to sit wherever we would like so we chose a corner table by the window. The place was pretty quiet but there were a few other patrons inside. Our server offered some drink options & we ordered straight away. I had the Chicken Flautas atop Bandera sauce, with a side of refried beans. The flavor medley ever evident within the flauta plate is spectacular. I highly recommend getting the bandera sauce which consists of red sauce, green sauce & white sauce (sour cream). The rice is so full of flavor & complimented my dish very well. The beans I will say are so creamy but lacking a little bacon flavor. My fiancé had the Beef Fajita taco plate which came with rice & beans. He found that the flavor of the beef was lacking a little something as well. Perhaps the addition of salsa would have added to it, which is very delicious. The salsa has just the right amount of spice to not overpower your tastebuds & the chips were amazingly fresh & crispy. The food is great, the free salsa and chips are delicious. The chips always come out warm/fresh.. the salsa is the perfect blend of flavor and spicy and I don't really like too spicy so this one is perfect. The lemonade is the best and natural lemons are used. The tortillas are hand made/fresh everyday. It's not easy to have hand rolled tortillas de harina and maíz fresh on the daily so I applaud them for that. Overall, the best Mexican restaurant I've been to in Austin. read more

My sister has been telling me for years that I had to eat at El Michoacano the second I get into Austin from Denver. Since we traveled toget5her this time, we stopped. (twice). First for lunch and breakfast on the way home. And she bought two dozen tortillas to take home which in hindsight was a bad idea as they don't do well in security. She had a combo platter and I had a carne asada taco for lunch and breakfast was the best breakfast taco. And at breakfast we were joined by two more siblings who are local to Austin and had never eaten there. I think we have some new regulars. Our waitress was the owners daughter and she was so nice telling us her favorites and family history. They have been opened for 22 years and I think that says it all. read more

Since I've been here in TX I've had the pleasure of getting my fill of tacos. I love tacos! My boss brought me in a couple of breakfast tacos from here, and I must say they were so delicious. The tortillas were soft, and so fresh. The hot sauce which I believe to be one of the most important ingredients to a great taco was fresh & had the perfect amount of heat. Very poor quality Mexico City style food. Tortillas crumbly, too thin and under cooked. Service was spotty, staff watching tv rather than tables. Shredded chicken tacos included shredded bone splinters. Beef taco was course grounds of beef, not much larger than ground pepper. Likely due to fatty content, very oily. Corn tortillas crumbled, but flour tortilla was adequate. Margaritas were syrup flavored without much tequila flavor...not worth the price~and we weren't notified about happy hour pricing, but we just wanted to flee the joint. read more

El Michoacano serves tasty cheap Tex Mex. Homemade tortillas are used to make great tacos. The salsa is good.Mexican coke is available. Great lunch specials. A killer Mexican juke box. For breakfast or lunch near the airport this was one of my spots. When you find out your best girl is doing your best friend she is no longer your best girl. The problem is lard. Lard has always been a part of Tex Mex cooking.In the old days people bought fresh lard or made it from pork fat. Today the hydrogenated lard containing trans fats is common in Tex Mex. El Michoacano uses the cheap trans fat lard. Sold in large tubs it will last forever. After Texas is destroyed in a nuclear war you find only cockroaches feasting on hydrogenated lard. Lard may be an important part of Tex Mex. So if you want to eat lard make it the fresh kind. read more

Oh boy! Teacher work day! We get to go out to eat like real grown-ups! The only problem with working way out here is...where the heck do we go? El Michoacano fits the bill for very tasty tex-mex in this culinary twilight zone around the airport. As an employee in the Del Valle ISD, I know how hard it is to find good eats around here. And what's up with that, developers? Hardly any place to eat around our airport? Hmmm. Our (fab) principal picks up big, yummy breakfast tacos for our faculty meetings; every combo imaginable, best homemade flour tortillas in Austin, excellent salsa so hot it makes me sweat. Perfect, in other words. Fresh, crisp chips that taste homemade, too. Very little English spoken, which is always a good sign, divey atmosphere complete with a spanish-only jukebox, spanish language newspapers, a small kitchen and a friendly staff. I've had the enchiladas (creamy, gooey goodness), sampled lots of breakfast tacos, and that's about it. They have your typical tex-mex variety of food, four caldos, entrees inlcuding puerco en salsa rojo/verde; seafood dishes, barbacoa and the like...all very reasonably priced. There are two things you need to try here: the flour tortillas - homemade and yum! any taco here is pretty tasty because of the flour tortillas. i especially like the chorizo and egg breakfast tacos. the chile relleno , it's probably the best chile rellno I've had in Austin or the surrounding area - fluffy, eggy batter deliciousness. avoid the front room, it is not air conditioned well/at all. avoid the queso! it is just horrible, watery and strange. you might get an authentic waitress that doesn't speak english, so brush up on your basic ordering skills en espanol. read more

If you are a vegetarian there are so many other places in Austin to go. I advise checking out a different place. If you don't have dietary restrictions then this place is great! I was invited out to lunch after a big meeting and they wanted to go here because it was close. I don't live in Austin so I just went with the crowd. Unfortunately this place had no idea why I wouldn't want to eat meat or eat beans that were cooked in lard. When I first walked in everyone was already sitting at a table so I joined in. There wasn't a large table - just a bunch of tables shoved together so we could all fit. No problems with that. The issue was that some of the tables were different sizes and heights and they wobbles and I was worried that my food would fall into my lap. The salsa was spicy and amazing on the chips! The waitresses were very nice. They brought the drinks out quickly but I did not see a menu so when she asked what I wanted I jumped to my go-to for mexican restaurants. Veggie Fajitas. She was so confused. She asked "You mean beef fajitas?" and I replied with "yes! Beef fajitas with no beef" and she stood around so confused. I then asked if they would be able to do that "Can you grill vegetables - peppers, onions, tomatoes, whatever without meat?" and she smiled and said she would check. She asked if I wanted beans and I asked if they were cooked in lard. She said yes so I politely declined. When the food came out the plate was full of grilled peppers and onions so I was happy. Plus I had some yummy rice with guacamole. The tortillas are hand made and tastes sooooo good! I love hand made flour tortillas. I am pretty sure they grilled the vegetables on the grill where meat had been used previously. They tasted a little .... greasy and it definitely upset my stomach. You need to know the menu to know what to order....I guess. I had the huevos rancheros plate. If you told me they opened canned beans and a bag of potatoes I wouldn't be surprised. Waited an hour for my food to be room temperature. I am giving it a star because of the tortillas and the horchata were pretty good. My boyfriend had Migas and wasn't pleased with it as well. I was dropping my man off at the airport for a work trip and since we were early, we decided to stop somewhere close to the airport to grab a beer and a snack. This place is pretty authentic, but very run down. It's very small on the inside and pretty ghetto looking - on both the outside and the inside. We had a couple of modelos and split some tacos. The tacos were tasty, but the shells looked like they were from the Old El Paso taco kit. The chips and salsa were decent - the salsa had a kick to it which I liked. There was a whole back room that was filled with Christmas stuff that the restaurant could visibly see, which I thought was hysterical. Not a terrible place to grab a snack and a beverage. I certainly wouldn't take a 1st date here, but overall, not too shabby for a quick stop. read more

Was just here on 19 Feb before flying back home. My BFF and I grabbed a few cold Dos Equis and breakfast. It is not a great looking establishment - in or out - but it is directly across from the airport and the service was very good. We were attended to frequently enough, with warm smiles and care regarding our food & beverage emjoyment. The menu is entirely authentic Mexican, so if you are looking for 'Chili's' (Blech, what's wrong with you??) then this is not your place. I think we were the only two people in the place who needed to look at the menu to know what they offered, and we were the only non-Spanish speakers (sorry, BFF, I know you've had classes, but you still don't speak Spanish very well...YET!) but it didn't matter as we were treated with equally good service. Its a simple place with good food and great service. Oh and the beer is nice and cold, even on Sunday mornings. A GREAT alternative to eating inside the airport before you catch a flight (and by the way, the airport doesn't serve any beer until after 12 noon on Sundays, so there you go...). read more
