Being from San Diego, I know good Mexican food, and this place had THE BEST tamale I have ever had in my life. The mole sauce was incredible, and the masa was so soft and flavorful! I saw Instagram foodie Festus try Mexican restaurants in the Santa Rosa and Sonoma County and he stopped by El Molino. I've been looking for a go to Mexican restaurant in the North Bay and decided to give it a try. I got the same two dishes he ordered, Beer Battered Fish Tacos and the Chicken Enchiladas. The guacamole and sauce in the tacos really made the dish! I can see why Festus likes wearing gloves while eating because it was tasty but messy as the tortilla broke cause it couldn't support its contents. The Chicken Enchiladas were delicious and you got to check out the nice cheese pull it has. The service was friendly and great. The seating is in the back and there were several bench patio tables. The temperature was good, the quantity was enormous and the taste was just ok. I was hoping for better. I think the mole sauce needed some salt. The chips are too thick. This place is soo good! I feel like it's an institution around here since it always satisfies whenever you eat here. On my most recent lunch date I came here with a work friend and we ordered to share. Portions are HUGE! We shared the chicken mole tamales and fish tacos. Both were exceptional, I'm sure others have shared the deep joy one gets when eating the mole here. I swear angels sing when you eat the mole sauce. It is so robust in flavor. Just exceptional. What I got: two tamales covered in green salsa (not mentioned on the menu) and a three pickled veggies. The veggies? Delicious. I wanted more. The tamales? Dry, tough meat, and flavorless. The red sauce inside was all heat, no flavor. The green salsa on top was super salty and spicy--two bites in and my nose was running. I couldn't finish it. Maybe other dishes are better, but this one was a no for me. Zero stars for the tamale, five stars for the pickled veggies. Service was a bit lackluster. The male cashier didn't greet us or smile--maybe just a bad day? There's only one indoor table (occupied by staff), so we ate outside at a picnic table in the gravel parking lot. You order from a small menu inside and then find a spot on the covered patio out back. Some of the best mexican food in the Sonoma area. There is a reason why this spot was so busy on a Saturday evening. My husband and I waited about 10 minutes to order, another 10 minutes for chips & salsa to arrive, and a total of 35 minutes for our entrees to come out. We're rarely in the town of Sonoma but happened to be driving through after a quick trip to Napa. Husband located El Molino Central on Yelp, their reviews looked good and their menu looked different and inviting. We know that they're listed in the Michelin Guide so we were really excited for an amazing meal. Sadly it was anything but. Parking is tricky, they have a tiny lot but the hardware store down the road a bit has a larger lot that they allow for public parking. You order at the counter and then find a seat out back. Water is self-serve in a cooler outside with plastic cups. I was glad the weather was nice. All the tables seemed to be super wet, perhaps from morning dew (we arrived at 11) but we were able to find a dry spot at a high table under an awning. My husband ordered the chile relleno de picadillo, I got the crispy chicken tacos, and we asked for chips and salsa (not complimentary, $7). They brought our chips and salsa shortly after we found a seat. They're generous with their salsa portion. The chips are way too thick and crazy hard/crispy. I honestly was worried about chipping a tooth! They had good flavor though, they're obviously made in house. Our food arrived after maybe a 15 minute wait. Plates were super hot. My husband was quite dismayed at the presentation of his chile relleno (I mean seriously, just look at the photo) whereas I thought mine looked nice. The flavor of both dishes were a disappointment. My husband took one bite and said he didn't think he'd even be able to eat any more. He managed to power through because he was ravenous but he clearly did not enjoy it. In hindsight he wishes he'd just sent it back and gotten something different but again, he was so hungry he didn't want to wait. The chicken in my tacos was dry and bland and the tortilla was thick and hard just like the chips. I liked the crema and whatever the red sauce was that they pour over the tacos. The "guacamole" which seemed more like just smashed avocado tasted off- like the avocados were past their prime (you know how they kind of get that waxy, weird flavor). On the menu, it stated that my tacos came with escabeche, which they did, however it was simply a sliver of very soggy jalapeño, two sad carrot coins, and one tiny string of onion. They had good spice but wow the vinegar was strong. Beans were okay but heavy on the salt. We both left feeling very disappointed and even hours later, my husband says he still feels a little yucky just remembering the flavor of his dish. I have to say it was a chile relleno like I've never seen before- little to none of the fluffy egg batter that I would expect. Everyone does it different but this was just... a letdown. No one really checks on your during the meal, if you need anything you either have to get up and go back around to the front of the restaurant to ask or get lucky enough to flag someone down while they deliver food to the tables. Clearly others have had great experiences and maybe we were just there on an off day but we have zero desire to return. read more

Karen Taylor opened this restaurant in 2010 and this restaurant has been amazing for Sonoma County! I came here after several people recommended it to me and I'm so glad that I did! I always order the fish tacos and they are so flavorful and tasty! The ingredients are really fresh, which I also love! The food is what really has me coming back whenever I'm in that area and my husband loves this place too! I find that the prices are well worth it because the quality is so high. The service is excellent here and people here seem genuinely happy to work here, which I love and think it has to do, in part, with this being family owned and not a corporately owned restaurant. Everyone is warm and welcoming and our food came out quickly. The ambiance is vibrant and has a relaxed vibe to it. There are picnic tables outside and umbrellas over them. The parking lot is small so you may need to park across the street and walk over if it's full. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in Sonoma because it really has it all: amazing people that work there, great prices for the quality, flavorful and delicious food, and it's locally owned so you know that you are supporting locals and not a restaurant corporation. There wasn't a single person not satisfied with their meal. The quality of the food shines through. I personally had the fish tacos. The fish was so crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth tender inside. And holy moly the tortilla is soooo good. I also had quite a bite of my baby's tamale and was so impressed by how moist and tender it was (I hate a dry tamale). The portions are great and we were able to take leftovers home. All the seating is outdoor on the backside of the restaurant! So you just place your order and help yourself to any open table. They'll call your name as they walk out with your food. First time coming to El Molino Central. I typically don't give negative reviews but this is going to be one. Today we were passing through Sonoma and were very hungry so we stopped here. The menu looked interesting. I had the CHILE RELLENO DE PICADILLO. Niman ranch pork picadillo stuffed chile, beans, guacamole & tortillas. Unfortunately, I have to say it was not good. As soon as they set the plate down I knew it was not going to be great. I mean, look at the picture . The pork was gamey and there was some herb or spice that I could barely tolerate. I almost spit out the first bite. But as I was starving, I ate most of it anyways. The batter on the chile relleno tasted really strange. The guacamole had that funky taste that avocado gives when they start to turn. Not sure how they wound up in the Michelin guide. The vegetables in escabeche (which is one of my favorite things to eat) was so bad I did need to spit it into my napkin. Also, chips and salsa are not complimentary. Pricy but delicious Mexican food in Sonoma! We passed by on our way back from some tastings nearby. We stopped by Sunday around 7 pm and it wasn't too busy. The way it works is you order at the counter and then walk through the kitchen to their seating / patio. Then they bring the food out to you when it's ready. I shared the fish tacos, which run $16 for 2, as well as their vanilla soft serve for $5. The fish tacos were BOMB!! Maybe it's because I was a little tipsy, but they were some of the best I've ever had. I killed my taco in seconds, it was so good! I tried some of the the guac and chips as well as my friend's crispy potato cheese tacos and both were solid as well. Overall we really enjoyed our meal here. Greeted immediately by a friendly female cashier and later served by a lovely young lady. We had the green nachos and also got a side of habanero salsa. Amazing!!! We each got the chile relleno en nogada which is my all time favorite item here!!! It's a winter item so get it while you can. I lived in San Diego and love authentic Mexican cuisine, if you do too this is the spot for you. Great beverage selection too and some grab and go options in the fridge. Finally made it out to El Molino Central! We've had it on our list to try as it's received such great accolades. The service was good, and everyone was very friendly and attentive. The building itself is really small, and the bathroom you have to go through the kitchen to use (seems a little unsafe and unsanitary). Parking is very limited. Seating is outside in the back. Now, for the food. Salsa was pretty thick, but it was fresh and flavorful. Chips were very thick and hard (also cost $7!). The fish tacos were not that great. The batter wasn't cooked all the way through. The best dis we had was the chicken enchiladas. Flavor was great. The onlyyyyy downfall to this is I think they put the whole plate in a broiler before serving and the refried beans were EXTREMELY hot. The entire roof of my mouth was burned. I did really like the flavor of the beans though (from what taste buds I had left). Overall glad to try it, but won't be back as it's pricey for what you get read more
