I hadn't been here in a while and it's not a place I would usually pick as a first or even second choice to eat out. Circumstances beyond our control lead us there. Here is my opinion. This place has always had a rabid local following. It is crowded on certain days and evenings and a great place to grab a bite that is reasonably priced. But is it a " good or great" restaurant? I would rate it fair. Foods OK. Service can be hit or miss. Last night we had excellent service but there was hardly anyone there and parties were leaving and it was 30 minutes before closing time. Mexican food is not my first choice. But this place is quickly changing my mind. Their tacos are un freaking believeable. I had one shrimp taco and one chicken and one wahoo. What can I say but every one was better than the next. Fresh and authentic. The rice and beans are spot on. They served us a cup of chicken tequilla soup that was so good I got weak in the knees. Stopped here unexpectedly on a recent trip to the area. LOVED the vibe, and Teresa, our server, was an absolute delight. if there was a 0 star review, that's what they would have gotten. service is poor, we were treated as if we were an inconvenience to them, our server acted as if she never worked here before and said she didn't know anything. it took 10 minutes just to get our menus, no one asked what we wanted to drink for awhile after that. the lady got mad because we called the "beef" tacos carne asada then dropped the plate in front of us laughing. we asked for 1 salsa and received 2 and they never told us it cost money, and also asked for 1 chicken plate of tacos and received too. WOW!!!! If I never came back here... I wouldn't care! Food was good but came out so hot that it burned my tongue. I guess you can see that as a plus but a warning would have been nice. We had made a reservation on Taco Tuesday for 7 and when we got there, they told us nobody had made a reservation for 7 and that we needed to wait. Well what's funny is after we talked to a different lady, the lady who told us to wait copped to it saying she did get the call. I was more than beyond pissed off. We went out back and saw a table for 6 and I suggested that they put us there and pull a chair over. They refused! Then after 10 more minutes of waiting, they did exactly like I told them to do earlier! What! The best part of this was that we rarely got checked on and that when the group wanted to split the bill 2 ways. They asked ME to divide it by 2. My family has been eating here for 28 years and until this evening it has been a top pick for south Orange County Mexican food for us. My wife and I ordered; 2 potato tacos for her and a potato taco and shrimp taco for me. I tried to order something that is not on the menu but for all these years they were happy to make. A shrimp burrito. They have tortillas and shrimp so what was the big deal this evening?..... Well the owner this evening was waiting our table! When she put the tortillas and hot sauce down there was a left over piece of onion on the rim of the hot sauce from another meal. When I asked for another, well that put us in the dog house. She was perturbed and let me know it. Each time she filled a soda it was evident she was doing us a favor! Although they appears "normal" for a Saturday night the owner seemed like the wheels were coming off. As for the food; damn nasty! The potato tacos usually to die for had a funky flavor and the shrimp tacos were terrible. There was a spoiled odor coming off the plate and shredded lettuce and we never saw the owner for the last 15 minutes of the meal while trying to get the bill. Advice; run. It will be a long time if ever we return. After without exaggeration over a hundred visits the past 28 years what a shame. Bad food is one thing. Poor service on top of it double no no. My experience here is an odd one. I am a san clemente native so I have eaten here several times before the food always being good and a bit overpriced. I was craving some of their chicken tortilla soup so I looked up their menu and called in to order some soup which said it was 4.45 and then a wet bean and cheese burrito which stated it was about 6 bucks. When I went to pick it up the lady told me 18.80! I was taken aback like nearly 20 bucks for some soup and a burrito?! I would feel terrible leaving the food I ordered without paying so I felt I had no choice, I paid. The wet bean and cheese burrito was really yummy and I was craving another one so I called and ordered this time I asked how much the total would be over the phone and she said (same lady as before) 6.75! OOOkay so why was it 18.80 last time? When I questioned her at the first purchase she told me the soup was 6...okay not as advertised...and the bean and cheese burrito was 6 plus 3.50 for enchilada sauce...but somehow the second time it was 6.75? The sweet pineapple complemented the saltiness of the cheese and created such a unique and unexpected flavor. I shared my tropical quesadilla with my dad that night for only one reason- he shared with soup with me and I couldn't help but eat most of it! The unforgettable tortilla soup was good enough to order two just for myself if I was planning on eating only that for the whole night. Once the steam stopped billowing from the cup I immediately asked my dad for a small taste. A small taste soon turned into, "Can I have the rest?" The soup wasn't just good for its flavor. The vegetables were soft and give a great overall flavor and flair to the soup. The soup's texture was mainly given by the stringy chicken that was mixed in among the veggies. The array of flavors makes it one of the best appetizers at El Patio by far. My favorite part is crunching chips into the soup to give it the ultimate texture. I always let them soften a little bit in the creamy broth before I dig in, it gives it that final touch making the soup complete. It is one of those things that can make a good meal great! I stopped in to have dinner on a whim. I had never heard of the place, just saw it driving by. I am rather picky when it comes to food. Although I am not a professional cook I am a very good cook and love complex flavors. Of course the first thing I notice is the flavor of the salsa. Salsa here was very basic and not much heat. The flavor was ok and at least it wasnt watered down so you could at least pick up some favor. The chips were standard,cold, pre cooked fare.I almost always try the standard beef taco and cheese enchilada combo plate on my first trip. The beans were nicley done and the mexican rice wasnt bad. The taco was fair to good, however the shell was not crispy. The shredded beef was ok but didnt have really a whole lot a flavor. The thing that stood out for me was the enchilada sauce. I really like a traditional style enchilada sauce made with chilies, chicken broth and lard. (Much like you get in Arizona, some call it Sonoran style) This was the closest Ive found in Southern Ca. to this type of flavor. I dont like the usual tomato based fare most CA based restarants serve. My guess is I will try this restarant again just for the enchilada sauce. Place is a little on the high price side for what you get. My thought is if there is something that you really like here its ok, I just dont think its good enough to be your goto Mexican restarant on a weekly basis. read more
