One of my colleagues treated me to one of his favorite spots in ABQ, and let me tell you--I was in for a treat! From the moment we walked in, the place had a cute, comfy vibe with a warm, family feel. Since it was my first time, I got the full intro: menu breakdown, house favorites, the works. My colleague ordered the Carne Adovada, which threw me off because I know him as a vegetarian. But after reading the description, I had to try it too! I usually stick to carnitas when it comes to pork, but I figured it was time to level up my palate. Boyyyy, was it spicy! Like, *pack-a-punch* spicy. If you can't handle the heat--do *not* order this dish! I cooled it down with sour cream on each bite, which helped a lot. The plate came with beans and potatoes, which I didn't expect, but surprisingly, it worked--*very* well. Every bite was flavorful and hearty. I washed it all down with cold water and a margarita (because balance, right?), and ended the meal with a warm sopapilla drizzled in honey. Perfect little dessert cleanse. *Yummers!* Definitely a different experience for me, but I'm glad I stepped out of my comfort zone. Very nice restaurant that's also pet friendly, cozy indoor fireplace. 8 adults and 2 kids all ate here for under $200 witch was a big shocker considering lunch for 4 somewhere not as nice was the same price. Love their green chile enchiladas - the best in town. Plus their potatoes are super yummy and their sopas are delish! Too bad they jacked their prices way out of normal range of New Mexican food. Will still go, but not often. Service varies in wait time, so just go with pleasant company and enjoy the ambiance. The outdoor patio at this locale is very nice, and the indoor is far superior to the one near UNM (but the food is just as good!). read more

Great New Mexican food finally in the north valley! I have been going to there original restaurant by UNM since it opened in the late 70's and now it is right down the street from where I live. I've eaten there twice in the last week and the food is fantastic! There green and red sauce are both very good but I prefer the green. My favorite item is there meat and bean burrito with there perfectly flavored potatoes on the side. Certainly in the top 5 new mexican restaurants in town as far as I am concerned. read more

I went out to dinner here last Friday, my first visit and it was far from good. I tried the fish tacos and the shells were not cooked. I was with a group of 8 and none of their plates looked appealing. They have terrible sopapillas too. Disappointing because our waiter mixed up dinners and checks. I really wanted to like this place...tried 2 different times in the same week.. the first time I went by myself.. service was lacking and was never given the chips and salsa I asked for and the food wasn't that good.. 2nd attempt i sent a guy over to pickup luch for my crew.. I figured we would find at least 1 thing good on the menu .. everyone of my guys was dissatisfied with there food.. I really wanted to be able to give El Patio a better review. I love establishments that mostly only locals know about. The architecture of the building and the rooms inside are just what I look for because of their distinctive new mexican style. We went on a Saturday around 2:00 in the afternoon figuring the lunch rush would be over. However, when we got there it turned out there was a party of about 12 people at one table, and several other patrons scattered about in the other areas of the restaurant. I noticed a couple of tables were unoccupied but the dirty plates, glasses, napkins, etc had still not been removed. We were shown to a small table for two just adjacent to the entrance and were basically told that was our only choice. One of the specials offered that day was "Chips and Queso". We ordered that only to be told they were out of queso. Surprising, right? We then proceeded to order the green chile cheeseburger and the combination plate. To be honest the food was in fact tasty. (we were fortunate to get our food relatively quickly even though we ordered after the party of 12). Honestly, I was expecting to be disappointed because of how things had gone before ordering. However, in spite of the loud, crowded room, a somewhat overwhelmed server and unavailable queso, the entrees did deliver. The clincher for this being a 3 star review and not higher were the sopapillas. Although they were served right out of fryer - piping hot - they were greasy and somewhat doughie. Overall the service was adequate. Not great...not awful. Will we go back? We're not ruling it out. If we do, we'll be crossing our fingers that it will be a better experience - if it isn't, we'll be crossing El Patio de Albuquerque off our list. read more

We were really excited to see El Patio open in our neighborhood. I have been there twice, first time at lunch with my bike club food was very good, music weird and loud for a Mexican restaurant (pop radio), waitress was nice, got the orders mixed up a bit but all in all it was fine. I went back again for dinner at 8:00, restaurant closes at 9. The waiter was not exactly welcoming, no chile on my Frito pie although I did ask for it. Some of the food was very good and some was ok. We liked that patio, and the retardant is very nice indoors. For this place to survive they need to make the food better and more consistent, and the service friendlier. And ditch the pop radio. read more

Okay, I am really struggling with what I think about El Patio on Rio Grande and Griegos. I love the original, since 1977 it has been the gold standard for New Mexican food. Sure had it's ups and downs, but damn good most of the time. So I had high hopes for the new place. We decided to try it for lunch. It's housed in the old Geezamboni's building and it really nicely done. It feels comfortable and much larger than the Harvard location. Our waiter was a very nice friendly young man. I think he was new and perhaps not well informed. The menu was new and included many of the old favorites. It was missing my all time favorite and usual, carne adovada burrito plate, so I made due carne adovada served on a corn tortilla. On the menu it said it could be ordered stuffed in a burrito or sopapilla. I asked for the burrito, but the waiter apparently missed or didn't understand that. So my carne came on a corn tortilla. My wife ordered a chili relleno and quesadilla a la carte. The food was good. The chili was tasty. My carne was tasty but a bit dry. Not quite up to their usual high standards. And, this is a subjective thing, but the servings seemed smaller than I remember from the original. So I still have high hopes, but feel less confident. Maybe we'll give them a month or so and try it again. In the mean time there is the original. read more

I've been coming here since 1988 or 90. Some years it was excellent, some high-end average. Generally it was reasonably priced. Every year or so I visit when I come into town. No more. The sopapillas were pathetic, the uncrowded Saturday service slow, and the food low-end mediocre. How hard is it to make decent green chili enchiladas in Albuquerque? My daughter and I ate at the new location on a Friday night. The outside area was nice and clean. Unfortunately...the service was very bad. and the food was fair at best. The patio was not busy but our waiter was running around like there was fire in the kitchen. He barely took time to talk to us about the menu. It felt really rushed and as if we were an inconvenience to him. We asked for water, that never showed up. We asked for chips, that never showed up and the fish tacos were cheaply made. No sauce and 1 tortilla that was way to thin to accommodate the heavily bartered fish. I think we were supposed to get sopapillas, but we never knew, it was almost impossible to get the waiters attention. However, when a party arrived that seemed to know the owner/manager, they had all the attention of the waiter. The guitar music was VERY good and I can see the potential of this place, if they can focus in and rise to the quality we in the north valley are craving. Bummer. read more
