We were traveling from North Carolina to our home in San Diego. We looked up places to eat and were tired of "road trip food". We found Herencia and took a chance. We know good Mexican food, as we are from San Diego, and wanted to try the southwest fare. WHAT AN AMAZING CHOICE! The lovely hostess was charming, engaging and sweet (wish i had her name) and our waiter (Edgar) was authentic, personable and fun to chat with. We had been at a movie and had eaten a bit too much popcorn so we did not order a lot. The three of us shared the free blue corn (not fried) chips with three salsa samples. Very expensive Mexican food with small portions. Food was good but not worth the price. They took the food too artsy and shrinked the sizes too much. Service did not match the price. Server didn't check on us too often and let someone at the table run out of water for 5 minutes until we asked for more. I had the pork al pastor ($26). It was cooked well and seasoned really nicely. Lobster enchiladas were nice but unique just to be unique. I asked for recommendations and all of the options were the most expensive on the menu which was odd to me. If they have a cheaper lunch menu it might be worth trying, but I think the dinner isn't worth it for the price. Four entrees and a soda was $130 plus tip. read more

Best restaurant that I had in Albuquerque. The first time I visit this place I tried the lobster enchilada and it was amazing. After almost 4 month, I visit the restaurant for the first time and it was just as wonderful. I met the owner Enrique who was hospitable and the food is truly authentic from Mexico City. YUM! This Mexican food restaurant on the eastside has clean delicious and unique eats. We stopped in on a Thursday afternoon for my birthday and got a nice seat on their patio, as I usually do now with the stroller. The waitress who attended our table was so nice and attentive. They brought chopped blue corn tortilla and salsa to our table- tortilla, not tortilla chips. It was pretty good, tho I do prefer chips as they help me forget I am eating entire tortillas before my meal. I got the crab enchiladas which were loaded with fresh crab, and the cream sauce... excellent! I sampled their mole from my fiancé's plate which was rich and flavorful. Took a friend for her birthday. We ordered the chicharon (sp?) and guacamole for an appetizer. Crunchy bites with great guacamole! I was there for a Saturday lunch, and we were given a brunch menu. I had 2 eggs over easy over a tortilla with chorizo underneath and a bean cake with plantain chips and beans on the side. Fantastic! Eggs cooked perfectly! Good kick to the chorizo! The ambiance is pretty great on the inside considering it's a strip mall. It has a cute patio and dogs look to be welcome, we saw bowls. The service is outstanding, very friendly. I forgot the name of the dishes because honestly I forgot to review it . Me and hubby visited Herencia last summer for lunch. As we walked in we were immediately greeted and seated. The restaurant was nice, clean and welcoming. When we were first seated they brought over a starter that had some tortillas pieces and 3 salsas to taste. I honestly can't recall the taste of the salsas but I thought it was odd that the tortilla pieces were cold and not crispy. I do recall ordering 4 empanadas that all had a different filling inside and I remember enjoying 3 of them very much. Hubby's dish was absolutely stunning. I remember him giving me a taste of his beef and it tasted as if it had been cooking for hours to achieve the flavors that were deeply infused into it. It was absolutely delectable alongside with the rice and squash it came with. The owner did stroll by our table and asked if everything was to our liking. You can tell he is very proud of his dishes and with flavors like these - he should be! I do remember it being kinda pricey for lunch due to the small portion sizes but you are paying for quality here so just keep that in mind. Came in from El Paso to check out the area and had a great meal and time! Our server was great she made great recommendations and pairings. It was a packed restaurant but we sat immediately, everything was super fresh and they first served heirloom blue corn tortillas with salsas. My steak was amazing with the cheese sauce, not spicy just the right amount of flavor! My husband loved the meats, he's said it was the best Al pastor he's ever had. Great wine selection as well! They have a patio with tables but it was really cold outside. Great place, we believe it was the owner or maybe manager, but he came to everyone's table and thanked us for being there and asked us how everything was, which was phenomenal! First the business hours listed on their yelp page are incorrect so don't go by that, we had a great dinner on Thursday night. This place is refreshing the service is punctual and kind. The water is served chilled ice cold without ice, small detail but a good sign for you water drinkers like myself. They play classic lounge music and Frank Sinatra the decor is very pleasant, and the plate presentation is great. The food tasted great. Well prepared, not your typical Mexican food and a very good change of pace. My husband and I went on a Saturday night and did not have to wait long to be seated. The service was good but slow and they seemed to forget us at times. Henrique is sweet and came around to all the tables to check on everyone. The food was good. My husband had the taco appetizer which consisted of 4 mini tacos which were all delicious. I had the mole which was good, however after being spoiled by a particular Santa Fe restaurant and their mole, I have high standards for mole. My other issue was I asked for a tortilla which didn't come until we were ready to go. I thought I was getting the soft ones my hubby had but instead got the blue corn ones which were very hard and not made to eat with mole. The veggies and rice were yummy. I have been with some girlfriends for lunch another time and my food was better at that visit. We will go back and try other items. Tried the new place based off of the reviews from Facebook. Presentation wise, the restaurant and food looks amazing. It's trying very hard to be "posh". If you want pretty, fine dining, smaller portions of food, this place is for you. If you are really hungry, go elsewhere. That being said, the chips and salsa are interesting. I enjoyed the variety of the three flavors for the salsas. Wasn't a fan of the soggy chips. I tried the crab enchiladas (2) and the sauce was incredible. Ordered lemonade, real lemons/ lime you can taste in the water, not powdered or syrup. Along with the ensalada de invierno + chicken. Amazing. Great flavor! Mom ordered costilla de res, great flavor as well. Awesome arroz and yummy squash with carrots and queso fresco. What a pitty we don't live in ABQ, this would be our local favorite. Since we're not big on sending meals back, only ate half the enchiladas and 2 bites of rice were consumed. No to go container, we won't be back. Overpriced "high end" Mexican food!! The restaurant has beautiful wall art and if it wasn't so cold outside I would have enjoyed their cute patio. The owner is there greeting all the guests and talking with them. The food was amazing and will now be our go to spot for Mexican food. I had a pork chop that was cooked to perfection. Just the right amount of spices . My wife had the medallion and it was also delicious. But the best part, the Pecan Flan, I don't even like flan and this was fantastic. We were finally on this side of town and decided to give Herencia a try due to all of the favorable reviews. Definitely glad we didn't cross town for this spot. Pros: The chef/owner greeted and seated us himself and was very kind. There is a changing table in the women's restroom (in the accessible stall). The restaurant, bathroom and patio were all clean. We ordered the taco platter for two. All the meats were well prepared and flavorful. Presentation of taco meat was beautiful. The umbrella over the patio table was amply large and provided good shade. Growth areas: The summer salad was beautiful but low in flavor. Service was sparse, despite there being only two other tables in play when we arrived. I had to go to the counter to re-order a drink that never came. They only have wine margaritas. I understand there's a significant cost for a full liquor license, so that's not the issue. The issue is that the margaritas are not labeled on the menu as wine margs (much like the lobster/langostino misrepresentation). I happened to ask her upon ordering of it was wine or tequila. I would have been upset if I found out only upon tasting the drink. Blech! The wine margs are overly sweet and syrupy (tasted one that my partner ordered; he didn't finish it). The limeade was bland and tasted premixed. The limes served with the tacos were dry. Waitress did not understand English well and made several errors due to this. The inside dining area and bathroom have an overpowering aroma of cleaning products (fabuloso or something fabuloso-adjacent). Overall: Pretty lackluster. Big bold Mexican flavors were not what we experienced today. read more

So excited to try something new, so disappointed in the result. My husband and I made a reservation, indicating it was a birthday dinner, and went to Herencia. First impression is that the dining environment does not match the menu prices - you'd expect something much more upscale when advertising $45 entrees. The birthday reservation proved inconsequential and was not even acknowledged. Typically, a special dessert offering is made but there was no acknowledgment of the special occasion listed on the reservation. We were looking forward to the two lobster entrees, enchiladas and tacos, and much to our disappointment, these ARE NOT LOBSTER. We addressed the staff that we thought there'd been an error and were profusely assured that the content was lobster. However, their entrees are clearly made from langostino, which is a crustacean similar to a hermit crab that is not a true lobster and tastes / feels nothing like a lobster. Herencia should take note that Red Lobster was sued and settled, for falsely claiming they were using lobster when they were using langostino. Herencia's menu clearly states LOBSTER. This is false advertising. Langostino is regulated by the FDA and must be specifically labeled on the menu as such - Herencia is in violation of this requirement. Additionally, they charge a real lobster price - appalling. The food came out almost instantly indicating pre-preparation. The avocado was quite brown and accompanying vegetables were virtually non-existent - maybe two forkfuls. The flan was very poor. The texture was clunky and it was buried in unnecessary fake whipped cream and an off-putting (due to texture) caramel sauce. A good flan stands alone and doesn't require accompaniment. After having flan all over the world, including some small mom & pop's establishments here in Albuquerque, this was the worst. The waitstaff were prompt and very friendly. A full bottle of water at the table is nice. This was our most disappointing restaurant visit in Albuquerque. read more

Sitting in the middle of the plaza, between four other food venues...and in a town loaded with many great New Mexican choices, Herencia is a extremely pleasing new option for authentic, nueve-leon family cooking...or at least I hope I got that right. That said, the service and atmosphere is nothing shy of top shelf. From the moment we walked in to the gratuitous thank you, after our meal...everyone treated us, and the other guests, with just a true sense of warm gratitude. I was watching the Owner, prepare a tableside Caesar salad for one of the table sitting next to us... And he looked like he was having so much fun. Not to mention, the salad looked amazing! We came down to visit this new restaurant a few weeks ago on a Wednesday night and we were warmly greeted by a server who quickly sat us at the table of our choice (being super new they weren't yet swamped). While we were reviewing the long menu, the owner himself greeted us and told us the story of the wall art, which features his family who inspired all of his recipes. This restaurant is STUNNING so I particularly enjoyed the backstory of the mural and its connection to the food we were about to enjoy. Instead of the typical chips and salsa, we received a trio of salsas (including a mole!) and soft blue corn tortillas to dip with them. Sooooo good. Following that opener, we all ordered tacos. My husband got tacos al pastor and I got them with carne asada. Both were fresh, full of savory meat, and just exemplary. Our margaritas were strong and equally tasty. It's a pity we didn't save room for dessert, but we will definitely be back. This is a proud, heritage-based Mexican restaurant that we look forward to returning to over and over and over. read more

Was greeted by a nice hostess as I met my friend who was already there. Our server was so attentive, friendly and helpful! This place is what great service looks like. We shared the Grilled Panela Cheese appetizer and it was flavorful and delicious! I had the Bacalao a la Bilbaina. The presentation of the plates is superb! Our dishes looked beautiful. I was hesitant at first because cod can be hit or miss but this was a hit! I loved how every part of the dish like the "side" items (rice and vegetables) were not sides at all. They shined just as much as the cod and complimented one another and were cohesive. My wine paired perfectly with my meal, loved their wine selection as well. The owner even came and checked on us to make sure we enjoyed our meal and our experience, and was warm, welcoming and kind. I cannot wait to visit this gem again and try other dishes.
