    Nachos
    Amy D.

Really wanted to love this spot. The decor is nice and the property gorgeous. Counter service was friendly. Nachos- the chips held up to the toppings and were yummy. Otherwise they were room temp, the chicken is bland, there's something overly sweet happening with the sauce (not a fan), and they don't have a salsa or anything spicy other than bottled sauce to help. The tacos come with double cold tortillas, again some kind of sweet sauce, and the chicken is still super bland. The fish taco had a solid piece of fish, which was fine, it just didn't impress otherwise. Fries were solid.

    Hola guapo and Fun-gai tacos

This is my second time at Pollo Guapo and the tacos were just as good the second round. My dad and I visited on a lunch date and found 1p on a week day to be quiet (so this is a perfect lunch spot if you're not looking for anything busy). The service was fine. The facility itself was decently? clean. There were four tables I passed up because they had a sticky surface, some weird residue, over the top. Otherwise the other half of the restaurant looked pretty clean. As I mentioned, the food was really good. The fun-gai taco has got to be my favorite with its mushrooms and Brussels sprouts but the hola guapo taco was equally scrumptious. 4 stars instead of 5 for the cleanliness

Have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally stopped in for happy hour. Very clean and friendly staff with great happy hour prices! We tried at least one each of the tacos at $3.00 each! Loved the Damn that is a spicy taco...the pickled onions were amazing! C'mon I'm a Fun-Gai taco was very good .... who would have thought mushrooms and Brussels on a taco but that hit a home run with this one. We also tried an empanada - it was packed with chicken and served with a sweet chili sauce. And the beer prices were awesome!! Tecate 16oz for $2.00!!! Great place! Sorry it took me so long to give them a try but we will be back very soon! Maybe this Friday !!

Weird menu. Been here twice now, tostada was bad, rice has peas in it and tastes like uncle Ben's. Nachos are ok drinks are GREAT. The second time we came they forgot to put ice in our drinks but hey, more margarita for me! The more bites you take the worse it gets I had to come back to edit this review. Brussels sprouts are good and flavorful but why in the world are they on a taco.

I'm so happy with this new addition to James island! This is such a fun restaurant with plenty of menu options to choose from - their speciality is rotisserie chicken and they do it very well! I ordered their nachos and the almost legal and dazed and confused rice bowls. They were all great and affordable options. I especially liked the plantains in the almost legal rice bowl. All of there choices included their rotisserie chicken which is absolutely delicious! For drinks - they have a couple fun frozen drink options and a few beers on tap from local breweries such as low tide. The restaurant set up is order at the front then seat your self and they bring your food out. The service was quick and all the staff were friendly. I would recommend coming here for a casual dinner that can accommodate small or larger groups.

So exciting to have a new healthy spot on James Island! I visited this restaurant twice so far and really enjoyed both of my experiences. The first time I ordered a bowl, which was delicious, but isn't a ton of food and comes at a $15 price point. My second visit I tried the "1/4 bird" which was so delicious and a much better deal! For $14 you receive a fourth of a chicken with one side, sauce, and rice. The chicken quesadilla is absolutely delicious and includes caramelized onions. I also tried a side of fries which were good, but not the star of the show. I love how healthy and flavorful the food was! Both times I visited my food, came out within five minutes, which I thought was incredible. There is a ton of seating and it's a really kid friendly option with both indoor and outdoor seating.

We stopped by El Pollo Guapo today on the way to the Festical of lights and surprisingly there was no one there. This was our first time. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the person at the counter, I explained it was our first time and he dug right in explaining the menu, giving us suggestions and some of his favorites. They also have a happy hour, so certain items on the board are half price (during certain hours) and then a specials board! He let my son try the limeade before we bought him one and I think that mixed with some lq for adults would be magnificent, though they already had adult versions in store but we didn't try them this time around... Anyways, the owner is from the Northeast, (CT) so I may be a little biased lollll but GO! They need peeps to eat all this wicked awesome goodness! Everything is so fresh. Picture was the family meal- Full Bird: Served with your choice of 3 sides & 3 sauces.and a chips and queso the queso was amazing and chips made in house!

Lunch date with my adult children. We were in the mood for Latin American food. El Pollo Guapo is a fast food type restaurant featuring rotisserie chicken, tacos, fresh salads and delicious side dishes. There is plenty of parking. Outdoor and indoor seating is available. I did a carryout order. They don't take orders by phone so you need to order using the website for convenient ordering and payment. My food was ready in under 15 minutes. Inside the restaurant it is brightly colored with a picture of a big, handsome chicken...a.k.a. el pollo guapo. I ordered the span-ish chop salad. It featured Romain lettuce, corn, avocado, crispy chicken peas, marinated cucumber, Pico, queso fresco and pickled onion with white meat chicken tossed in a cilantro lime vinegrette. This was a big portion of fresh delicious veggies and tender white meat chicken tossed with a lite dressing that just brought all those flavors together. It was a little pricey, but worth it for the freshness and unique mix of veggies. I would recommend El Pollo Guapo if you are looking for a fast food Latin American influenced menu.

    Quarter chicken with 2 sides

El Pollo Guapo recently replaced black magic cafe on Folly road. I loved black magic so I'm sad to see them go but wanted to give the new place a try. I had a quarter chicken with 2 sides (rice and fries), the food was great, chicken was cooked well and the sides were tasty and good portions! You order at the counter and they bring the food out, easy and fast. Overall really liked El Pollo Guapo and I'll be returning sometime soon!

Wife says this is the best place to eat on James Island. Hard to argue. Food is unique and delicious, service is great, vibe is cool and relaxed.

Our party LOVED this place!!! Great outdoor seating on even a warm day. We ate the quarter chicken and the Dased and Confused. Great flavors, the chicken was incredibly tender. An awesome find on James Island!!

Last night I placed a large order: burrito de birria, two tamales, pozole, large bag of chips , guacamole, drinks . After driving 30 minutes back to my hotel, I opened the bag to find the tamales were completely missing. Then I tried the pozole, and it was so salty it was absolutely inedible. On top of that, they didn't include a single condiment--just a bland, overly salty soup. I tried calling for 30 minutes straight--no answer. Left a voicemail--no call back. Not that night, not the next morning. Completely ignored. The next day, I went in person to give them a chance to make it right. I had my order number and explained everything clearly. Instead of even attempting to help, they refused to do anything without a physical receipt. No effort to look up the order, no accountability, no customer care. Just excuses. Expecting someone to drive 30 minutes back with uneaten food just to prove a mistake is ridiculous. I ended up having to go to Wendy's just to eat dinner after spending money here--that alone says everything. Mistakes happen, but the way a business handles them is what matters. This place clearly doesn't care once they have your money. This wasn't my first issue here, but it will definitely be my last.

Fortunately we were early enough to get a place to sit before the line formed out the door. The biggest complaint was the service. They appeared to be terribly understaffed for even a regular day. The chicken was overcooked and it had a two shrimp in the filling. Fortunately I have no allergies to shellfish and actually like shrimp but his could have been disastrous for someone else. The restaurant was very loud and could also use some updates. In spite of the large crowd, and being grossly overworked, the staff remained helpful and friendly to the best of their ability which I give them kudos for considering the situation. The menu looked innovative and delicious. It's very much like a Chipotle or Moe's in that you can custom build your order but they also have standard dishes. It was a little confusing on how to do an order so I decided to just go for the standard dish of a chicken Caesar. It was advertised as blackened chicken with lettuce, cheese, tomato.and black beans. You could choose plain white Mexican rice or a quino with a free black beans & peppers mixed in as a base. I ordered it as a bowl thinking it might be sort of like a salad or like a taco salad. I asked for more lettuce than quinoa. What I got was about even amounts, but even then the lettuce was in one little pile on the side of the plate. To me it should have been the base. Put the Quinoa on the bottom and then cover it with lettuce when you're doing a bowl. That's how Chipotle does it and Moe's. They build their bowls very similar to the bowls you get at a grocery store that has small amounts of different ingredients around the bowl, but then you're supposed to mix up to make your salad or not depending on your preference. This had about as much tomatoes and black beans as lettuce. For some reason they needed to make the chicken in the back. Since I was expecting blackened chicken I thought it was just getting it from the back since they had a different kind of chicken up front on the buffet. What I got instead was a complete surprise because it was just plain ass fried chunks of chicken. Absolutely no flavor and dry and chewy. I think it must have been thier older already cooked chicken that they decided to recook fried in a batter. It made no sense. As I was waiting and telling the girl what to put on my salad and asking for more lettuce, she globbed a giant scoop of dressing on that was as much or more than any other ingredient. I don't even know what she was thinking... she even looked at me like I wanted another scoop....had I had any idea she was going to 1/4 cup of dressing on top of the little bit of lettuce, I would have stopped that shit right off. Turned it did help with dry chewy bland chicken to swoop a glob of ranch dressing to go with it. But when it came to trying to eat the rest of the stuff it just became a blob of white white dressing with a little bit of lettuce and beans and a this or a that mixed in. I rarely throw away black beans and any form of protein but simply couldn't finish it and it's really quite amazing for me to actually say this since I try to elevate people and thwir small businesses. The place is clean and neat and everybody was very nice with their service. It was just our first time being there. We didn't really know what to order or how to order it effectively. Most of the ingredients on their buffet look like they've been sitting there for a while. It was empty so it might have been a restock after the lunch crowd. Husband got the beef burrito because the chicken that was out look like it had been heated up for a, and the beef was in a bit of aujus. He didn't get the black beans because the black beans were completely filled up with liquid, served with a slotted spoon and he thought of they didn't properly drain them or since they weren't just beans they were more of a soup that would make his burrito to to soggy so he opted not... And he said it was pretty good anyhow.

Both made our day! I will say: Duncan makes the best Berry Coladas!! That drink is SO GOOD! it tastes like a coconut berry smoothie (we got the alcoholic version with rum, but there's a nonalcoholic version as well). Once our table was ready, we were moved to a booth. The overall decor is coastal and cute, with basket-lighting, wooden booths, and multiple ways to order! You can order via your server, QR code, or a paper ballot. We started off with the large sized chips & guac. I was skeptical at first because the guacamole doesn't have tomato, but it was VERY good! We devoured it! For tacos: we got: The baja fish taco: one of my favorites--the fish is perfectly crispy The crispy duck taco: good! Not super crispy, but definitely tasty The cauliflower taco: a surprise hit! I found the flavors very refreshing and well seasoned! The tuna taco on a bed of lettuce: this one can get messy. I ordered with my stomach instead of reading the fine print that it doesn't come in a traditional taco tortilla. The overall taco is good and the tuna has excellent flavor. The taco does come loaded with a sauce that tends to spill--so eat over the tray! My sister got the carne asada taco, and she felt that it could have been better. She felt the carne asada itself was bland and relied on the sauce for flavor. I'm usually skeptical of chain restaurants like Bartaco, but I've been pleasantly surprised: their food is reliably good! (Of note, the Bartaco in Hyde Park Village in Tampa DOES take reservations, unlike this one). I wish this Bartaco also took reservations. On busy days, you can easily expect a 30-45 minute+ wait to be seated here. That being said, the guacamole, the drinks, and the tacos are overall very good! I found that ordering 5 tacos was more than enough to fill me. My sister and I split our bill of berry coladas, large chips & guac, and tacos (5 per person) and it came out to $33.53 per person (with tax and tip).
