Found this little gem while in town for business and I can honestly say, I am glad we gave it a try. I do not know where the name came from but it did have a boxcar feel inside, it was quaint and very well decorated. The service was top notch, took our order right away and gave great recommendations. It's been six months or longer since I've been and their sauces have definitely changed. Their blue cheese used to be thicker and have a better flavor and when I went yesterday - well it tasted nothing like Blu cheese and was thin. The fries are especially salty now which I wasn't a fan of. My dad ordered a smash burger and said it was still great (it looked great too). Overall the prices are reasonable and the staff is incredible pleasant. My son and I drove around today looking to try something different from our usual suspects. We saw boxcar Betty's and I remember hearing such good things about it. I was so excited to go try it. That being said it was a bit disappointing. We went ordered and the girl on the cashier was not very friendly. OK she's young not a big deal. She gave us a cup to go get our drinks and they had no ice. OK, I have worked in the restaurant business since I was 12 so I know things happen. We sat down with our warm drinks and the table was sticky, ok, we were going to move to the next table, but it was sticky too. Now it's just getting frustrating. Food was delivered. I loved the fries, my kid did not. The best chicken sandwich they are famous for was so soggy and just not good. It wasn't horrible, but by this point I was just done. They do ask for a tip and I tipped 15% at checkout for them to bring food to the table, you do have to clean up your table. I have worked in f&b for a very long time. I love Boxcar Betty's! If you are in Charleston make sure to go to one of their locations. This one is located right on Savannah Highway. There is a small amount parking on the sides and behind the restaurant. This was my first experience. It was awesome! The staff were amazing. The customer service is on point. They were busy, but nothing was missed. They made sure to say hello, a thank you, direct us to where everything was, and help with the menu. The restaurant indoors is casual. It has large electronic menus up that are easy to read. There is a small counter where you place your order. There is seating in and outdoors. There are wooden tables spread throughout inside. The space is not huge but fits a decent amount of people. Outside you will find a few small metal tables under an awning. The food was awesome! We got the create your own combo. I highly recommend. It is a great deal. You get a sandwich that you choose your protein, sauce, and toppings(there is a limit). And small fries with a drink. I enjoyed this option because the sandwich options they had I would have wanted to switch something or add. This way I got what I truly wanted. The chicken is well seasoned and sooo crispy! An entry into my list of places that are not for vegetarians, but have made an effort, this place offers sandwiches with a portobello mushroom cap fried and stuffed with pimento cheese. This turned out not to be the greatest decision, as pimento cheese and Buffalo sauce flavors clash. The mushroom cap itself was quite indulgent, but at least I got in some fiber. Their combo option includes a small order of fries; sometimes small means barely enough to notice, but here small is plenty for one person. It also includes a drink, and wanting to avoid any further indulgences I was happy for the option of unsweetened tea. She warned me that the maple syrup might be too sweet, but I thought it was excellent. When we come back, I might order a cheeseburger just to be able to try other items on the menu.
