My go to order is the family meal pack. One time I stopped by just for myself and I tried their pollo bowl...keep in mind the chicken they use in the chicken bowl is not the same as the typical grilled chicken you get with the plates. Because of that, I don't recommend the pollo bowl. I legit can just drink their salsa up... it's that good. It's very tomato-y and there's no heat to it - it's all flavor. I personally love it. The rice and beans are mid but I don't care about that because the grilled chicken and tri-tip are all that matters here! SO GOOD! The restaurant is such a cute vibe too. Good service and good decor. And I have to say, I ate here all the time growing up so I feel like this spot is an Oxnard staple. My first time going to El Pollo Norteno. I was very surprised when ordering my 1/2 chicken meal that one of the sides that comes with a meal is salsa. Salsa is a condiment not a side dish. The 3 ladies working today on Halloween were hustling it out taking orders in person, through the phone and what I'm assuming were online orders. The phone would not stop ringing, and the kitchen staff was hard at work also. I've worked in the restaurant business before and know how much pressure those busy evenings are. Over rated for the price and flavor. I was recommended to this place by a coworker and honestly i was not impressed at all. Pollo Loco has better tasting chicken and juicier than this place. They only have 1 type of salsa which is made of tomatoes only (pico de gallo style) not spicy at all and flavorlesss. Perhaps I don't understand what El Pollo Norteno is all about. I drove out of my way to buy take-out here after work, so I expected to be blown away by the food given how popular this place is. I didn't taste anything special at all. FOOD: Tri-Tip and Chicken Combo: The tri-tip was tender and very juicy. I initially thought it was straight up bland, but after re-dipping each piece in its own juice, it was slightly more flavorful. As for the chicken thigh I received, it was just as tender and juicy but definitely lacked in flavor. I don't know if I went on an off day or if the marinade is supposed to be very light, but it didn't appeal to me. It comes with beans, a mild red salsa, and a tortilla. My husband and I stopped in here for dinner tonight. Though he had been here before, I had not, and definitely wanted to try it. We each got burritos, which came with chips and salsa. The chips were light and crunchy, and the salsa was a bit spicy (said my husband; I didn't try it myself). I enjoyed my bean and rice and cheese burrito quite a lot, and my husband enjoyed his trip-tip as well. The restaurant itself is a bit of a dive (there was a noticeable chunk missing from the glass shade on the light above our table), but it is also very clean, with bright, lime green paint on the walls and cheerful colors throughout. The woman behind the counter who helped us was very polite and friendly and our food came to our table very quickly. The service was good, and the place was friendly.
