I love Pepe's. It's a great place to grab and go for food. There's a few tables but it's more for waiting. It's a corner small building over by the beach. There's no bathrooms here so if you need to go then probably not the place. It's a takeout place. The food is great and cheaper than places nearby. Staff is great as well. read more

Good food but good LORD probably the worst service one could ever experience. If "no accountability" was a business. We asked for carne asada tacos and received carnitas instead, no big deal right? Simple mistake. So we went back and said hey we asked for carne asada not carnitas, and dude started blaming us saying "you were too busy on your phone. You were too busy talking to each other. You said carnitas" (we were not on our phones and yes we were talking to each other BEFORE we ordered to figure out what we want). Lil bro I always get asada at every Mexican spot I go to, I've never even ordered carnitas before. Then he says "you can pay for other ones if you want" instead of just offering to remake them. Eventually they remade them and we asked what the dude's name is and he got defensive obviously, and then some woman says "you guys made a mistake and we fixed it for you." Jesus Christ just take accountability, you misheard me. Instead of just remaking the damn tacos with no issue like a normal business, all 3 employees tried saying it was our fault. Good lord. Quick breakdown: it's been a beloved beach shack from at least the 1980's with consistently good food and service, then the owners sold it and those peeps did not keep the standards up. OG owners reclaim the place and now it's chef's kiss again for locals and visitors alike. It's a take-out shack, but has 4-5 picnic type tables outside that seat 2 people each. There were 3 orders ahead of us but service was still fast - maybe a 10 minute wait while we sipped on our drinks and enjoyed the salty beach air. Hubs and I had a breakfast platter (shredded beef) and burrito (chorizo). Everything was fresh - portions were huge - could only finish half of each dish. I asked for hot sauce and they gave me a tub of salsa which seems homemade - it packed some serious heat! They also have house made agua frescas. I had a small horchata...again, plenty big and nearly couldn't finish it. This place is now in the regular rotation. We'll be back! read more

We ordered a Silver Strand burrito, 2 bean burritos, an Asada torta, a carnitas chimichanga and 2 fish tacos. Everyone reported positive reviews, although my 8 year old had trouble with the bean and cheese burrito because it was so stuffed it was spilling out. Looked like a lot of locals were here getting food. In the future if I ate here again I would call in the order. Loved Pepe's back in the day when everyone would just go there cash in hand to grab a couple (or 4) fish tacos (the best) and devour them either on the benches out front or more likely to take back home. It was inexpensive and absolutely delicious. Non locals, surfers and just people in the know would stop by and buy fish tacos at this Silverstrand gem. Then, they sold it and it was horrible. For years!! Horrible. Original owners are back and the food is again delicious. Old fish tacos are back BUT are way too expensive. I get it. Prices have increased everywhere. But $5/taco? This is a taco stand. Come on. Disappointing. If it were more cost friendly, we'd eat here at least 3 times per week. I think a lot of people feel the same way. It's definitely not as busy as it used to be back in the day. For the actual fare, I'd give it 4.5 stars. For the cost I'd give it 2 stars. read more

Shoot... I tried this place 3 times since it's in my hood. I want it to be yummy but it's just BLEH... Hoping they see this to fix the simple problems. Really no flavor to the meat or beans--definitely needs some seasonings, even a bit of salt. Just extremely bland. Easy fix. Ordered a hard shell beef taco and the shell is full of oil. Seems as if the oil wasn't hot enough before submerging the shell, hence cooked too long and the shell falls apart into a million oily pieces while eating. Tossed that out and just re-ordered a plain bean and cheese burrito no rice, add pico. Got home and RICE. No flavor to the beans. Pico bland. No flavor. Disappointing. Large size (enough to eat for 2 meals but lacking flavor). 2nd time around asked for the "corn burritos" as they are recommended by locals. "Can't do those sorry"... ok, so went with the safe bet again - a bean/cheese burrito no rice, and a side of fries for my neighbor. The fries were like the taco, filled with oil and cooked way too long, almost burned, and soaked in oil. Tossed those. Forgot to open the burrito before I got home and AGAIN RICE! UGH... NO RICE pleeeze.. LOL... Hopefully they step it up and put some flavor in the meats/beans, and change out the oil, and fry correctly. The oil tastes old. Great spot in Silverstrand. I dont want to imagine a Silver Strand Beach without Pepe's. Sure, it is cash only. But being prepared with the cash to buy tacos, nachos, burritos, or whatever Mexican food you like steps from the beach is a good feeling. The super nachos are quite large and feed my small family of 3 But we have been opting more often to get carnitas street tacos. The carnitas is stuffed into the street tacos and well-flavored.
