A friend recommended this to try the roasted chicken and Tri Tip. As simple as it can get but the flavors are so wonderful. On their sign pollo and Tri tip are their specialty and That's what we ordered. The combo plate cakes with baked beans and tortillas. 1/4 chicken white or dark meat and 4-5 pieces of Tri tip. THIS PLACE IS FIRE. Do yourself a favor and come grab some delicious food that they are serving up here. Each time I have came they are fast and the food is so good. Very good quality food. For starters the chicken here is incredibly flavorful and juicy. You can get half a chicken with a side of beans and salads with tortillas for $11 bucks. Most recently I ordered the bean and rice burrito and I added cheese and sour cream and it came out to $9 bucks. THAT BURRITO WAS MASSIVE. Local Legends in the Oxnard area. Pollo Norteño specializes in flame broiled chicken and tri tip. The family owned business has been serving up their specialty marinated meats since 1982. The chicken has great flavor, nicely marinated in a batter that is brushed onto the meat giving it a fire-orange color. The tri-tip has beautifully chard, grill lines and is served with meat juice from the grill. The cooking style is in it's name, paying homage to the ranching regions of northern Mexico, Monterrey and Sonora. All of their plates are served with whole pinto beans, fresh salsa (heavy tomato flavor) and warm tortillas. It's not my favorite salsa, but some people love it. I prefer a green tomatillo, jalapeño, and sereño salsa. You can substitute the salsa for rice, if you're not a fan of salsa. You can also purchase additional sides, such as marinated onions, rice, potato salad, chips and salsa, grilled jalapeños, and pickled jalapeños. The Norteño Bowl is perfect! I do not really know if this is at all related to the major El Pollo chain. Completely different menu and a one of a kind small restaurant. Very old school built in late 1940's my guess. Been here twice. They have Tri-Tip which i personally didn't care for. Dry, chewy and over salted. The chicken bowl was ok, dry chicken breast a drizzle of sour cream with rice and beans. Major complaint is they charge for chips, only have one salsa, red mild. No green avocado like the chain. My second visit ordered the #2 half chicken meal. Chicken wasn't freshly made but still decent. The price , decent quality as portions are the reason to go here. That and the service was good. Doubt I'll be going back real soon. Think I'll stick with the chain instead. 4 stars and I'm being generous. Cheap decent food, price of a McDonald's meal but lot healthier. read more

One of the things I appreciate about El Pollo Norteno is its consistency. Our meals have always been fresh and prepared to order. They used to have a location in Santa Maria and in downtown Oxnard. Not sure they're still open. The menu is simple. The chicken is flame broiled as is the tri tip. If you want sides besides pinto beans you have to tell them. I always get the potato salad because though not homemade, it adds a touch of sweetness to my meal. Average Mexican rice without any added ingredients is a side. You can get onions and fired chilis. I find it odd that they consider salsa a side. I order the $2 bag of freshly made chips which comes with salsa. The salsa is made fresh and generally mild. You order at the counter and your order always arrives within 5 minutes. The servers are friendly and prompt. Soda in can, bottle or fountain is higher in price than I like paying but I do because I want to do my small part to keep the restaurant open. I sometimes get a slice of decent cheesecake for $4 for a nice dessert. The cheesecake reminds me of the Jon Donaire Costco sold. They also offer bowls and burritos with chicken, tri tip or Mixto which combines both. I still wish they would offer fresh grilled corn on the cob seasonally when it's locally available. $2 an ear would be great or $3 Mexican style. I also wish they would reduce their fountain/can sodas to $2 from the $3.75 they charge. McDonald's used to offer $1 soda any size! We live far from El Pollo Norteno near LAX and before the fires that have recently closed PCH 1-2/2025 we'd drive the 90 minutes along the coast and dine. Now it's the same time but on the ugly freeway. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is that of a friendly family restaurant. The food is very good, pretty healthy and nice portion sizes. The service is normally super quick which made me nervous the chicken wouldn't be thoroughly cooked. I've been there at least once a week since I have learned of this place and the chicken is always done and very yummy. The salsa is good as well. The food used to be great. I went in yesterday and ordered the half chicken plate to go. The chicken was way over cooked and dried out. It's a shame that they thought it was okay to serve food that should have been either thrown out, given to homeless or consumed by employees for free. As a paying customer, I should get the best quality they can serve. I feel that I am not an important customer despite having frequented this establishment for 20 years or more. I read a few reviews of this place before deciding to write on of my own and I think some people have a misunderstand of what this place really serves. First, I want to clear something up, this is NOT the best chicken I have ever had. I really hate reviews that start like that, they are the reviews I overlook on purpose because they are just simply not true. Second, the tri-tip they sell here is NOT tri-tip like you get at a BBQ place, it is not Santa Maria style tri-tip, it is more of a carne asada type of tri-tip. In-fact the owners should really start calling it carne asada instead because it is really misleading. Third, this chicken place has a little bit of history in Oxnard, it has been around for a while and it serves the need for a decent "pollo asado" that is not like they garbage they serve at Pollo Loco. In the border towns of Mexico like Tijuana, you will find tons of chicken places that serve the same type of fare as they do here and the flavor is very unique with their marinade and wood-grilled aromas. Now, I have yet to find a place that is at the same level as those little stands in Tijuana but, El Pollo Norteno is the closest thing we have here in the nard to satisfy that unique flavor craving. So if you can get over the fact that tri-tip is really more of carne asada and that it is not the best chicken in the world, I think you'll come to enjoy this place for what it really is, a decent place to get a complete chicken meal. I frequent this place at least once a month and one of the things I have learned is that if you ask for juicy chicken, you will get juicy chicken. I know, it's weird that you have to ask for it but, remember when it is slow, they just leave those chickens on the grill and they tend to dry up a bit. So if you want to try something a little different and miles better than Pollo Loco, then give this establishment a try. And if the owners read these reviews at all, please for the love of god, fix your salsa. It used to be nice and spicy and now it looks like you cater to the weak because it just tastes like mushed tomatoes which is in fact an insult to the word salsa. read more
