This Poultry Parlour offers the finest feeding experience to be found north of The South Pole. Satellite locations have puzzlingly been dwindling (this gastronome first came in contact with their divine comida a generation ago at a now long gone hole in the wall in Isla Vista - thank you, Mister Remy, for discovering) and, if their stark website can be believed, it appears that we're down to a mere TWO locations that inexplicably operate mere blocks from one another. The meat of the matter: It cannot be determined with certainty whether the chicken or the steak is superior. Nab the combo plate and confuse yourself. The beans are a blessing (order extra), the salsa massages the tongue, the flour tortillas are laudably lardy and the beer is cold. Consistently cordial employees will greet you here. The earthy dining area, their catch-phrase ("IT'S DIET-LICIOUS!"), and their mascot (a chicken sporting a cowboy hat, nesting upon an open fire, awash in descending beads of perspiration) will have you on your feet hollering, "This place is PSYCHEDELIC!" The last time we were here, this outpost offered tshirts for sale. If you are an upstanding citizen you will purchase one or more and wear it/them everywhere you go. About 18 years ago, I would have rated this place a 4 star, but since then it's slid a bit. Don't get me wrong, the food is still good and the value for what you pay for is exceptional. However, I agree with other postings that the consistency isn't always there. There are times when your chicken is dryer than other times. Although your tri-trip has always been on the money - it's not like you could mess up grilling some tri tip. I feel that if you arrive for an early lunch, you get last night's unsold chicken that they warm up and it causes it to be dry. This is just my own opinion. SO, if I come here I make sure I do right after the initial first lunch rush to get a juicier chicken. I wish they served diet Coke, what's up with that Pepsi? read more

My boyfriend always gets the tri-tip bowl that is LOADED with tri-tip beef, rice, beans, cheese and topped with sour cream drizzle. He orders sweet red onions on the side. Red salsa comes on the side as well. I order the tri-tip plate with double rice, flour tortillas, sometimes chips (freshly hot fried) yum. The tri-tip is kind of blackened on the edges with grill marks and has been marinated in a peppered juice. Makes great sandwiches or tacos the next day if you order a pound. So good! Another hidden gem. A friend took me here; fast friendly service. What's good? Salsa and chips. Chips are light and flaky, perfect amount of salt. Salsa isn't strong, but is very tastey. Norteno bowl. Honestly, I was dissapoitned when it was dropped off at the table. It looks small, simple and didn't seem appealing. However, the rice was perfectly done, the tri tip option ~ a direct impact flavor AND.. the queso-ish sauce was a great blend. There are a million fast mexican food options around. El Pollo Norteno occupies a 1960's diner-style building surrounded by an ample parking lot on a rather bleak stretch of PCH in Oxnard. The large space is filled with comfy looking green vinyl booths. Various Mexican decorations hang from the walls (including a painting of a muscular Aztec carrying a fainting maiden). One orders from a limited menu of chicken or tri-tip at a wide counter at the back of the restaurant and all the food is served on styrofoam. My husband and I were returning home to LA from a camping trip and wanted something different from the usual mall fare. A big burrito sounded perfect so thats what we ordered. Our Tri-Tip burritos were very good. I can't say they were out of this world, but thats not really the point of an inexpensive Mexican eatery is it? They simply said not a gluten free kitchen so don't eat the food here which is prepared before delivery so employees do not even know what is in food. Great chicken and tri tip! I had the combo special which includes both tri tip and a 1/4 chicken. My chicken breast was served skinless. It was delicious and juicy. You can't help yourself to salsa, as in most other places of this type. They put a serving of salsa on your plate. So no hoarding the salsa, as you often see at El Pollo Loco. The one thing that annoyed me somewhat was that there are no refills on the sodas, as you typically get in most places these days. Sodas are a big money maker, so it seems kind of petty to force you to buy another drink if you want more. All in all, though, the food is very good here, inexpensive and quick. We just catered this place this weekend for a small get together. The price was great and the food is always good. Sometimes better than other days. The food was okay, this time around. We had plenty to go around which was nice. I was disappointed that they said the meal came with six WHOLE chickens and there were only thighs and wings. I didn't see one breast or drumstick. So if you order a catered order or family meal check that you get what is promised. This won't stop me from coming back however because they really do have the best tasting chicken and I love their salsa and chilies. This restaurant is hit or miss. Great service. Clean establishment. BUT, the food can be underwhelming or ... undercooked. The chicken tastes like its days old since its so dry and skimpy. The tri-tip can be delicious or disgusting. I put up a picture where my tritip is seared on the outside but raw inside. Terrible food. I've never rated a restaurant where I've never eaten before. However, there are times when that little voice in the back of your head is telling you to leave - and you fight it tooth-and-nail because you haven't eaten all day and you're hungry as hell and this restaurant is the closest walk to where you are. Somehow, my hungry-self beat back my stupid and lazy self and I walked out of this place without ever trying it...and for every good reason. First of all, I went to this place at about 15 minutes after noon. As I walked in, this place was empty except for a couple of people. Strange - but not totally unusual. I walked up to the order area and a very pleasant young lady asked me for my order. Since they advertise try-tip and chicken as their "specialties", I asked how the tri-tip is cooked: smoked? Dry-rubbed & barbecued? Grilled on a grill? The answer: "I don't know." Okay - then how do you prepare the chicken? Is it grilled? Broiled? Boiled? "I don't know." Let's try this then - can I sample the truth-tip? "No, we don't give samples." Fine - but how about if I order the tri-tip and the taste isn't very good. "I don't know." Can I get something else? "I don't know." I was puzzled. My hungry brain was screaming at me to shut up and order already, dammit. My rarely-assertive smart brain cleared its throat and said "leave". The girl behind the counter looked at me and again asked what I would like to order. "I'm worried that if the tri-tip isn't very good, I've just wasted my money" my smart - brain blurred out. "We can't give samples. If we did, we would have any stuff to sell." I can totally see her point. Then again, they should have plenty to sell if nobody buys it because they don't want to waste their money. All the signs in the back of my mind said "get the hell out". Let's see: sales staff that doesn't know - strike 1. Doesn't stand by their food - strike 2. Won't even ask the kitchen how food is prepared or if they can provide a sample: strike 3. Thank you, smart brain. You saved me. I was out of there before my stomach got the chance to change my mind and walked a half mile away to get a great burrito at a new - and excellent find - Fiesta Mexican Restaurant. Would I go back? No. Would I recommend? No. Best thing that I have to say about Norteño is that there are plenty of other places in Oxnard where the service is better - and you don't have to "take a chance" with the meal. Like I said - try Fiesta just south of Norteño on the other side of the street, or for incredibly great tacos, try Vallarta Super Market at 5 Points. read more

I'm a big fan of the tri tip and chicken combo. You get a 1/4 chicken, 1/4 tri tip, some beans, some salsa, and tortillas. The tri tip is served on the more well done side, though I think it is seared before they serve it. They pour some au jus on top of it. You get quarter of the bird plus a wing. I just use the tortillas for the tri tip, the bird is meant to be eaten with your hands IMO. And yes, the salsa is on the soupy side here but I don't think it's watered down. It's not always consistent on the heat, sometimes hot or sometimes mild, but it never really bothered me. I prefer the hot stuff. I'd say the prices are pretty good, you can eat here for around $6-$8 minus a drink. El Pollo Norteno only sells chicken and tri tip. You can them in the form of a dinner plate or a burrito. I like that they specialize because I personally don't care for places with 50 items on the menu. You won't have to worry about what to order here. Don't come here to get your culinary mind blown, but for solid but simple meal. El Pollo Norteno also gets bonus points for reminding me of El Pollo Brothers from Breaking Bad. read more

I would rate a ZERO! Horrible service. The girls who are in the front taking orders/cashiers are just talking ignoring customers. Came in and totally got ignored. While another customer came in and just ordered, I had been waiting to order and did not even get acknowledged. There are two registers, like if they were waiting on who would take orders first. Maybe the owners should train their employees with customer service. When I received my order I did not get a "Thank you!", as the precious customer did.
