Live down the street and it's hard not to eat from this place everyday. The chicken is rotisserie style and you can order half and full chickens, plain and with seasoning. I prefer the seasoned version, it's delicious. I get the half and that comes with 2 sides and a dozen tortillas. Their hot sauces are homemade and have a nice kick. You will also get a chile toriado (grilled jalapeno) for that extra kick. I really enjoy their frijoles charros. Beans in a delicious broth and bits of bacon. So good! I throughly enjoyed this restaurant, the seasoned grilled chicken was juicy delicious and the sides ( rice refried beans and green onions) were equally as tasty. Every time I drive down Pulaski at 63st I smell the grilled meat coming from the restaurant and you know that chicken going to taste good . I also tried the chicken burrito bowl which was great but difficult to reheat because of the fresh veggies and meat mixed together I.e. lettuce, but overall very good. Second to none, El Pollo Real is not only the best place to get Pollo Asado, it is also the best Mexican restaurant in Chicago. Right off 31st between Kedzie and Pulaski, you'll find this diamond in the rough. If it helps, follow your nose and you will not struggle to find with the delicious smells of the smoke. A few other notes: An order of Arrachera (skirt steak) with a side of beans and guacamole; half chicken with two sides; whole chicken with two sides: under $50 and feeds about 6-8 easily. For takeout, 25 minutes to prepare with cebollas (grilled onions) and salsa (hot sauce). **While you're waiting, I strongly recommend grabbing some pan dulce (Mexican pastries) to go from Bakery La Paris just down the road towards Pulaski. I might be screwing myself with this review, but it is too good not to share. Tortillas were cold this past weekend we went, with hungry kids it's important to have things hot and ready to eat. We weren't able to dine in and the place was very busy. I still love this place! The prices here have gone up by about $3 since I first came here several years ago. I love coming for their Tuesday/Thursday specials where you get an extra half chicken for free when you order the whole chicken combo which includes corn tortillas, two different salsa, rice, and your choice of refried or charro beans. This is a meal that could feed size hungry people! I like both types of beans but my partner prefers the refried kind. The chicken is moist and has an amazing char flavor. They have plenty of tables to sit at and enjoy your chicken, but if you are taking advantage of the extra half chicken special, it is take out ONLY. El Pollo Real saved the evening. There is this place near EPR that, according to their name, serves Italian and Mexican food. I was intrigued and decided to pay them a visit. This place cooks Mexican grilled Chicken, Sinaloa style, which I'm not sure what it means. But you can see the guys there in the kitchen working those grills. I was surprised that it was so busy. Last year I went to Mexico after many years of not going and the one place that used to have this type of grilled chicken was different and their food sucked. I was so sad. I found this place totally by accident because we were stuck in traffic in Little Village area and we were hungry. I was so pleasantly surprised. Food: You basically pick a whole chicken or half a chicken, either "natural" style or "adobado" which means it has seasonings. I don't see much of a difference, but I like both. Also you order if you want Chicken only or if you want the extras too. The extras are usually two types of salsas, tortillas, onions that are pickled, rice, beans (I think), a grilled jalapeno. I have tried their homemade Flan and I think it is very good too. They also have specials on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday where if you order a whole chicken with sides you get half a chicken free, something like that. Location: Tag Team needed! It is hard to find parking around here so make sure you have a partner when coming here. One who can stay in the car and hopefully find parking and one who can go in and order or pick up the order. It is basically a small place, not really a restaurant, you can eat at the counters at the sides of the wall I guess, but people are usually just there waiting for the chicken. It's really a pick-up location. They have delivery also. Cons: Well, I really have no cons, but maybe there are things you should look out for. I think their English might be limited, I have only ever spoken Spanish here and that's all I have heard spoken here, so I don't know how well their English is here. Also, this place has always been busy, even when I went on Monday to get the special, it was busy! As a result of them being busy, they might run out of either one type of chicken or another (natural or seasoned) and sometimes they might run out of other things, like the flan. They are fast at making the order because they are practically cooking for future customers that will arrive, but even then, sometimes they run out and they will tell you if you will have to wait, maybe like 20 minutes. Also, we have been here a few times, but I think there is one cook here whom I don't like how he cooks the chicken so much, it seems to happen when he is the only cooking at the grills and I think he works with the heat too high, so the chicken gets more charred on the outside. That only happened a couple of times, but my mom noticed it too. The other guys are good though. El Pollo Real is located on the south side of Chicago not far from Cicero. Some of you may be unsure of the south side but hey, you're going to eat amazing chicken not going to an art gallery. Not that there's anything wrong with an art gallery except that they don't serve the best chicken around. So we went with my wife, brother and his wife and my 10 year old nephew. One of best parts about going with a group of us is we order lots of food so we can all share and try everything. The other part about going with us is we order lots of food and usually have lots of leftovers. As we were getting closer you could smell the charcoal in the air. We parked on the street and went inside. They were quite busy with lots of take out orders going out. We elected to eat in. Their menu is pretty simple. They have seasoned or natural chicken or flank steak. All their meals come with tortillas, beans, rice and potatoes. They also had guacamole and chips. So we ordered 3 chickens (yes for 4 adults) some flank steak and guacamole and chips as we love that. While we waited for our food the smells in the restaurant made us even more hungry. From where you order you can look into their kitchen and see the pit of coals burning where they are grilling their chickens. When I die, I want to be buried right there.When our food came out, it actually came out with several severs. I think we ordered the whole coop. Our table was full of chickens, steak and food. We all started on the chicken. This chicken was so flavorful, so juicy. It was just perfect, The seasoned had a perfect blend of seasonings. It was not spicy but savory and smoky from the charcoal. The natural had just the great flavor from their charcoal. I noticed while I watched they grilling the chickens that they basted them with something. I wonder if could get a gallon of that to go? This food was so good. We did a lot of damage this evening and ate way more that we should of. It was that good. The kicker of the meal was their potatoes. They grill/smoke these whole potatoes that they serve with their meals. Crazy good. I made sure we didn't have any left over potatoes. Their beans were creamy and excellent but really were a side order to that chicken, We found out after we ordered that they have a special during the week that when you order a chicken dinner you get a half a chicken for free. So with some help from their deal we ended up with a nice bag of left overs that will probably be eaten as a late night snack. You have try this is place. Without a doubt, hands down the BEST al carbón chicken I've eaten in Chicago! The chicken is perfectly grilled with some amazing seasoning that brings out the best flavor in the meat. The chicken is never dry and the portions are very generous. While you're there, go ahead and try the arrachera. This review is not due to the food. It is the service I just received. I have been going here for a while. I always order large orders from this location. Today I called to order a combo bowl. The lady I spoke to told me to hold on so she could see how much she has to charge me. I though it was strange but ok. She comes back to the phone and says $18...for just the bowl. I didn't ask for extra meat!! When I asked to speak to a manager she said there isn't one there and everyone there is an employee. WHAT????? How do you have a restaurant and there is no manager???? That's just crazy!!! Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if there is no manager on site who did she get the $18 price from? Who authorized that number? I have to order from them for my job but this will be the last time. I will find another place nearby that also has good chicken. As I entered and sat myself, I was completely ignored so I thought this is going to be interesting. To my surprise, the waitress came from the kitchen to greet with with stale chips and a variety of salas (this place is better known for take out).
