This place is amazing! From their mocktails to entrees. I came for a work event and the beef with guac appetizer was so filling. I didn't need to order more food but enjoyed the appetizer so much that I tried the Yucatán trio was good. I highly recommend this place . The servers were helpful In making recommendations and the ambiance was nice. We had our own private room!

Pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this place. I was nervous because it had 3.5 stars on Yelp. Idk why. It was such a lovely experience. I came with my husband and family. We celebrated my mom and my birthday. They allowed us to bring our own cake from Portos. It's such a lovely place! The ambiance is intimate so it is perfect for a date or low key event. The food came out so quickly and everyone loved their food. They offer complimentary chips and salsa. Our table ordered shrimp tacos, chilaquiles, mole enchiladas (chicken), and two chicken fajitas. Everything was absolutely delicious. My mom is incredibly picky and she didn't have one complaint. We didn't order alcohol but I had El Pepino mocktail. It was refreshing and delicious. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. The staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

What I like about El Portal is not only do you get good food and service, but also how they mix up the menu with specials. This is the local Pasadena go to for a good time, good food and relaxed atmosphere There is a charm to this place that's appreciated by the locals and a quaint discovery for out of owners.

I really enjoyed eating here. This restaurant is tucked away in Pasadena and really works to immerse you with the themed decor. Super immersive and cute. Such a solid spot for authentic Mexican cuisine. Charming through and through. Both the indoor and outdoor area are themed and delightful and I don't think either one is better or worse, in fact I want to come again just to spend more time inside because I was super happy with the outside alleyway seating and would love to bring others to enjoy it as well. I thought the crunchy tacos were excellent. Usually I'm not much of a chicken taco fan but I thought these ones were super good and savory. Service was spot on. Atmosphere was authentic and festive. Food was perfection. Can't ask for anything more!

El Portal was a fantastic place to have brunch! Our waitress, Beatrice was so kind and attentive.

El Portal never disappoints! The patio is absolutely lovely -- a great spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere. We started with the guacamole, which was fresh and delicious, served with chips and salsa. A must-order have. We were only there for drinks. Our waitress was attentive, polite, and made the whole experience feel welcoming. The vibe here is consistently great, which keeps us coming back. One small note: the beer bottles could be served a bit colder -- but honestly a minor detail when everything else hits the mark. Highly recommend El Portal for a fun, laid-back meal with great food.

We had tickets to a show at Pasadena Playhouse so we're looking for someplace close by. El Portal is basically across the street at the Arcade shopping area. It was a lovely dinner, very pleasant with live music playing. We sat outside had a lovely cool breeze on a warm day. At our table we ordered the Yucatán Trio, el Portal Tostada and a combination with chile relleno, chicken enchilada, and pork taco. We also had a slice of flan for dessert. The food was delicious and service was excellent.

This Mexican restaurant is hidden off of Green Street with private parking lot. The whole lot is festive for the holidays and decorated for Christmas. The choices are many, but the fish tacos had my name on it. Our waiter was quick to bring our dinner and was nice about keeping up with our orders. The plus for this restaurant is got 500 more frequent flyer miles by dining here!

Happy hour is until 6 which is a win in my books. I noticed some places are only until 5 these days not even 5:30.. 11$ happy hour drinks (margaritas and Paloma's are strong) and 11$ for 2 large beef flautas. You can add a side of beans for 5$. The bar can get packed and busy, so be prepared to be patient especially if the one bartender is making drinks for the entire restaurant. My main squeeze got a chicken fajita burrito (which he said was better than the carne asada one, surprisingly) -- definitely check this place out and get an outside table if you come with a group. The patio is nice

It's a fairly nice restaurant in terms of atmosphere. The service is great--the waiters are very sweet and attentive. However, a word of caution: I got the worst stomachache after eating here. Not sure what caused it, but I usually don't have this problem. Tortilla Soup (complimentary from the waiter due to me picking no beans in my taco) - Very well-seasoned and flavorful. It had tortilla strips, cheese, and guacamole in it. 2 Carne Asada Soft Tacos ($23) - Pretty good, though I'm not sure they were completely worth the price. They do come with a generous serving of rice, but these definitely weren't the best tacos I've had. I probably wouldn't come back here any time soon.

We were eventually offered two separate tables, which we accepted just so we could stay. Our server was slow and not particularly friendly, and the service overall was mediocre. We discovered Cabrera's during the almost 2 year time span when our then go-to for Mexican, La Fiesta Grande in So. Pasadena, closed and their new location on Glenarm/Marengo opened. We tried a multitude of Pasadena places, including Mijares, Casa del Rey, Margaritas and El Torito (gringo!). Cabrera's was our fave, with a better location for us vs. La Fiesta. Their menu extended beyond the "ordinary", and I liked their plating/presentation. A slice of cucumber or orange adds a lot to a mound of shredded lettuce garnish. Mind you, our family fave for +40 years is still El Tepeyac in Boyle Heights, but that's quite a shlep. Cabrera's has also been around awhile (40 years) and now has 3 locations--Arcadia (the original), Pasadena and Duarte. All are owned/co-owned by 2 families, one named Cabrera. The Pasadena location is near the corner of Lake and Orange Grove, next to popular breakfast spot The Reyn, with which it shares a rear parking lot. All locations have a full bar. I have ordered off the regular menu, breakfast menu and Happy Hour bar menu. The breakfast menu is mostly offered on weekends when they open at 10 am, but you can ask for it weekdays at 11 am opening. My fave dish is the chilaquiles. As stated before, their all-day menu has some unique items, but I stick with the more gringo choices. Their chile rellenos used to be quite large, with the poblano chile clearly visible. They're a bit smaller and more generic now, but still fine. We order it as a 2 or 3-item combo or a la carte. Note their complimentary chips and salsa comes with 2 salsas, one red and one dark green (smoky and quite spicy). Lately we have been coming here for their Tuesday or Wednesday specials. Tuesdays is of course Taco Tuesday, and I love their crispy beef tacos. They have a special avocado salsa on Tuesdays. Every Wednesday, a certain dish is 50% off for the entire month if you order a soft drink, a great value. The most recent specials were fish tacos and steak or chicken fajitas, both delish. As AARP members, we usually arrive at 11 am opening. Inevitably either Christian and/or Guillermo, scions of the 2 founding families, are on duty then (Christian is the Pasadena manager)--shout outs to both of them! We are very comfy and happy with our newish go-to for Mexican food.

They have plenty of TVs, so it's a fun spot to grab a bite and watch soccer. The main reason I've been coming back is Taco Tuesday. The tacos are around $2 each, come with a decent amount of meat, and they also give you chips and salsa. They usually have carne asada, chicken, carnitas, and chorizo. I can normally eat about 4 to 5 tacos and be pretty stuffed, so I think it's a great deal and definitely worth stopping by on Tuesdays. I've had some of their other menu items before, and they were just okay. But between the Taco Tuesday special and all the TVs for watching games, I've definitely found myself coming back more often. If you're looking for a casual place to catch a soccer match or other sporting events and grab some affordable tacos, this is a solid spot.

Maybe I'm getting to be an old fuddy duddy but I hate when parents let their kids go free range. Screaming and running around like the establishment is a park these kids becoming trip hazards. There needs to be a revamp of their board game collection. There three boxes of games that looked incomplete or used up, not good with such games as Scrabble and Pictionary. Free Wifi with log-in is a bonus!

These recipes have been handed down and developed with great spices and unique flavors. When you walk into this quaint, cute boutique restaurant, you are immediately engulfed in the aromas of quality food. It is a sensory experience. I was immediately welcomed by the friendly staff. I told them that I needed some time to understand some of the descriptions on the menu. They offered assistance explaining some of their unique dishes. I let them know that I was going to be taking all of the items to go. It was difficult to decide on only a few items. I knew I was going to be ordering for a couple days of great food. I decided on: Burrito Gordito Carne Asade Wet A Chicken and Beef Enchilada plate with red and green sauce with rice and beans. 1 Nachos (Chicken) with lots of cheese Taquitos ... Chicken, Beef, Pork with rice and beans While I waited for my order, I listened to the music playing in the background. There were a number of people that came in and picked up orders that they had phoned in or placed online. The staff was busy checking orders for pickup or taking care of the diners at the tables. They called my name and carefully double checked my order with me, before I left. When I arrived home, the fragrance of the fresh cooked food filled my kitchen. All the items were incredible! I was especially pleased with the cheese spice and flavor of the chicken nachos. I was able to add some of their fresh made salsa to add some extra kick. The enchiladas were incredible. The red and green sauce added color as well as flavor. The taquitos were also excellent. Filled with meat and flavor. The carne asada burrito was excellent. The flavor with the addition of some salsa and sauce was filled with meat. Meat was not just small shredded pieces but large flavorful bites. Well the main parts of my meal were exceptional so were the sides. The rice, the beans, the crisp tortilla chips, all added to this delightful eating experience. I will definitely be back to this hidden gem, located among some other great boutique stores and restaurants. The staff provided conversation as well as expertise. Lupita's is a great place to celebrate great food! It is easy to understand why they've been in business for such a long time. They truly take pride in their restaurant and their family's history.

This was actually our second attempt, the first time we showed up on a Saturday afternoon they were closed, despite their online hours saying otherwise. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and came back. Service was okay. The food? Disappointing. The shrimp cocktail was the whole reason we made the trip. It tasted watered down, had no seasoning, no lemon, and still had shell on the shrimp. It genuinely tasted like a pre-made Costco cocktail in red dyed water. The fajita plate (shrimp, beef, and chicken) was passable but nothing special. What really ended it for us were the hidden fees. We ordered the fajita plate $30 (+ taxes) a massive spread with a separate plate of rice and beans and they brought out THREE corn tortillas. THREE... I am Mexican. I have eaten at hundreds of restaurants in my lifetime and have never been given only three tortillas for a plate that size. We asked for more tortillas and were charged $4 with zero warning. It's not about the money it's the principle. The charge was never disclosed. When I brought it up with the owner, Lupita, she was dismissive and couldn't explain the reasoning it's not even homemade tortillas. You can literally buy 90 tortillas for $4 at a grocery store! She took off one of the charges but kept the other $2. Meanwhile, they offer unlimited chips and complimentary salsa without blinking. The inconsistency is baffling. We genuinely wanted to support this family-run restaurant we loved seeing the family come in together. But the disrespect during that conversation made it impossible to leave on good terms. Do yourself a favor and drive about a 1.5 miles down the street to El Metate. Their large shrimp cocktail is $15, is so flavorful, and the staff treats you like family. Their pozole is outstanding too. We found them on our first failed attempt to come here and we'll be going back to them exclusively from now on. We will never return to Lupita's and made it clear to not go there in our community thread with 15K people. Unless you like hidden fees and mediocre tasteless overpriced food then this is your place otherwise...don't come here.
