We walked here from the hospital while my brother in law had surgery at the hospital nearby . Service was amazing so many different people came by asking if we needed anything. Chips and salsa were so good chips crunchy and fresh salsa wasn't overly spicy but had a perfect amount of heat . I love how authentically it was decorated . Looks like they have been open for more than a 100 years and I can see why! What a hidden little gem! If we ever need to be back in this area we will be back thank you for the hospitality and delicious food!

I was in the area and since I was super hungry and hadn't been to Mijares in over 10 years, I figured there was no time like the present. We went on a Friday late afternoon and sat outside in the patio area I had always loved. I can't put my finger on it, but there were many reasons this wasn't a 5-star experience. Maybe it was the time of day, but the ambience was just off. Yes, four stars is still good, but I really expected better. The blood orange margarita was just okay. Compared to other Mexican restaurants (and boy, have I been to plenty), the margarita was considerably smaller and weaker in terms of alcohol content, but the price didn't reflect this. When I spend $16-20 for a margarita, it's usually money well spent. The 3 tacos plate was great: chicken, carne asada, and al pastor. The carne asada burrito was also very flavorful. The House salsa was fantastic and fresh. I could have done without my very basic veggie tostada, though. Other places have grilled veggies and just a lot more flavor to their veggie tostadas. This one didn't taste like anything authentic at all. I was the slowest diner of the group, and the server asked me twice if I was finished when I still had half of my plate left. He kinda reached in to grab the plate, too, which was awkward. The third time he asked, I had like a quarter left, but I Just let him take it. It was kinda annoying. In the past when servers were going on break or leaving for the day, they've told me and I've closed out the tab. I'm not sure if this was the case, but I felt rushed although it wasn't busy outside at all (we were one of two occupied tables.) Overall, the experience fell short, and even though I'd return in the future, I'm not rushing back anytime soon.

Always driving past this street and never been inside this restaurant. Finally got to try it and loving it a lot. The outdoor seating is really nice, especially when it's not that hot outside. We ordered the chicken taquitos with guacamole and Chicken & Machaca Enchiladas. The food was so delicious and service was great. We didn't get to try their desserts cuz we were stuffed. Definitely coming back to try their Happy Hour menu. Only down side is their parking lot is very small so it's hard to find a parking spot.

4.5 I was so happy to be invited to a private event! I heard the place wasn't that great, but the buffet totally changed my mind. I tried Achiote Chicken, Pork Chili Verde, Steak Picado, rice, beans, and salad, all super flavorful and delicious. Even the chips, salsa, and guacamole were really good. The vibe was great, and the servers were fast, friendly, and attentive. It was a fun evening with friends! Parking was a bit odd cause it seemed hella small but luckily there was some available in the lot.

Happy Hour margs, need I say more?! Hard to believe that this restaurant is over 100 years old, not many establishments can say that. It is a real cornerstone of Pasadena dining, there is a love or hate feeling when you bring up this restaurant among locals. Chips and salsa is provided with orders so it is the perfect after work stop. They do have better the ability to make quality margaritas for full price which is almost 2-3 times happy hour but if you like mezcal it might be worth it for a more refined taste. Conveniently located by the 210/134 freeway entrances, it has it's own lot that says a lot for Pasadena establishments.

Mijares has been around over 100 years, although it started as a just a tortilla store. Jesucita Mijares, the first owner fled the revolution in Mexico. Somehow she decided to settle in Pasadena where she opened a tiny Tortilla Factory & established the restaurant. I think the original place had a bad fire and it was rebuilt. It is so very comfortable and clean and just pretty. This is traditional Mexican food. She used all her her original recipes and they still do. They are well known for their Happy Hour and their Margaritas. They have indoor and outdoor dinning. The prices are fair for Pasadena. The food is stellar. Make a reservation. They also have a banquet room and private dinning. The enchiladas are excellent and their rice and beans are so good. Make sure to get tortillas. Their hard tacos and chili relleno are so great. Everything is great. You will love it.

Such a nice place for Mother's Day dinner! We came here with my husband's mom and grandma and it was the perfect spot! My mother-in-law and grandma shared that they had the perfect time! I left my sunglasses here and we called and spoke with the manager (we think?) and they were so so kind! The food was so so yummy too! They even had mariachis and they got tears out of us! The ambiance is so so classic and nice too! We loved all of it! Thank you for a perfect night, Mijares!!

Went here for our annual office Christmas party. First time here, and as a longtime resident of the City of Roses, I feel a bit ashamed for not visiting sooner. This really is a Pasadena institution. Needless to say, Mijares is extremely popular. Every time I pass by, the parking lot is always full. Speaking of the parking lot, it's very small. Good luck trying to find a spot. You might get lucky in one of the adjacent residential streets. Maybe. I ended up parking off of Fair Oaks, which is like a 10-minute walk from Mijares. Inside is much more spacious than it looks from the outside. Plenty of seating, including a large outdoor patio. This is a great place for large group gatherings. There's a nice little full bar inside, too, that seats about 10 or so. Staff is efficient and friendly. Menu is LARGE. You'll take a while trying to find something. Prices are a little steep. Ordered the following: - Crab enchiladas - 6.5/10: A little disappointed in this one. It was just cheese enchiladas with some crab bits on top. The crab was a bit tasteless and was similar to the canned stuff you get at the grocery store. Accompanying frijoles and rice were good, though. - Strawberry margarita - 7.5/10: Not bad. A little on the light side, though. The avocado dip I'd say was the best dish for me. Super fresh and tasty. Not sure if I'd come back just because of the hassle trying to get in, but I wouldn't mind. This is a fun, relaxing place that's steeped in history.

Mijares is one of Pasadena's prettier Mexican restaurants and also its oldest, around since 1920. It's apparently situated on the site of founder Jesucita Mijares' original tortilla factory, restaurant and residence. It's still run by her family. It's a large space, with good-sized indoor dining rooms plus several patios and a large banquet room with its own patio. Even its parking lot is pretty spacious. The menu is quite extensive and includes an all-day breakfast section. The prices are perhaps on the slightly pricey side, but their Birthday offer for Birthday Club members is quite nice, includes a combo and flan! My combo #12 was fine, although the chile relleno was a bit generic. The machaca con huevos I ordered to go was very good, as was the flan. Service was friendly if a bit sparse. Overall a decent choice for Mexican in Pasadena, with a lot of history. I would say my go to is still Cabrera's for the food, but Mijares has a nicer atmosphere.

Mijares has been in business for 100+ years, they are a favorite among locals. Whether you are here by yourself, dinner for two, or a private party in the banquet room, they've got you covered. It's a lively place with a full sports bar with high-top tables when you enter, or request a table in one of their dining rooms. I do like the Guacamole that is prepared tableside, it's worth every penny and calorie!!! My usual meal for lunch or dinner is Chicken Mole Enchiladas, the sauce is rich and thicker than the green or red Chile version. If you want to try a variety, they have an appetizer sampler, sizzling fajitas, fully-loaded nachos, cheese or shrimp quesadillas (non-meat). Be adventurous and try the "Garbage" burrito filled with everything (lol) and your choice of chicken, beef, pork or veggie style. Make reservations by calling 1-626-792-2763 and don't forget to tell'em that Rosemary sent ya!!

Mijares Mexican Restaurant Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Mijares Mexican Restaurant

Is it full bar. Jack and coke?

I've never had a drink at the bar but from what I remember it looks like a full bar.

What options for vegetarians do you have eg do the beans have lard? Does the enchilada sauce have chicken base?

We don’t use lard. We use veg oil. No chicken base in the enchiladas. We have vegetarian fajitas, if you see our menu we have a “V” next to the items that are vegetarian.

Will you be bringing back your super popular Sunday buffet brunch?

They said they will bring it back on Sunday, March 6th. She was tentative on that date so I would call to verify. Hope that helps.

Can we dish our own food at your Sunday brunch or is it served to us?

Yes! Buffet Style! My Mom is the owner & oversees our buffet every Sunday! We have the same items on the Alice's Sunday Brunch Menu on line at http//www.www.Mijares restaurant.com

Is there anyone I can speak to about a group reservation? I've been calling this past week with no luck.

Last weekend we went to Saladang Song and a party of 6 adults and 2 kids were told they could not sit more than 6 to a table. Perhaps that's why they're not replying.

    Do you have free parking?

    Yes we do!

There's a consistency in the quality and pricing on your reviews, what do you think is the primary factor?

Do you still make your own tortillas? Are the tortillas still made in-house?

Hi Eric, We we’re making fresh tortillas on Sunday’s when we were able to offer Bruch. We make our own chips but not tortillas. I see you uploaded pictures but did not give us a 5 star review.

Will you be closing on Friday?

No, Mijares will be open. We are allowed to serve outdoors on our 4 patios here in Pasadena. We do not serve indoors. Mijares will continue to be open each week Tuesday-Sunday 11am- 8pm. Call for a reservation or just walk-in, order food togo with…

Do you have special space for a large group of people for Saturday's during lunch hour? If wanted to do a large group would it be one price or how do large party's work?

What are the vegan options? (Vegan, not vegetarian!)

We have Vegetarian Fajitas that comes with beans, rice and tortillas. It doesn't have any meat or cheese, except on the beans. You would have to tell the waiter you don't want cheese on your beans. We also have a Grilled Veggie Burrito and a Bean…

Are the beans or the rice cooked with any chicken stock or lard? Looking for vegan (not just vegetarian!) options.

Great question! The Mijares rice is made with chicken stock. We don’t use any Lard what so ever. We use Canola oil. Beans are just beans. Absolutely no Lard or stock. I hope this helps.

    Is brunch offered on Saturdays?

Hello Dawn. We do not offer brunch on Saturdays. Thank you for asking.

What are the happy Hour specials (and times)?

Hi, I'm glad you asked. Happy Hour is Tuesday through Thursday from 4 - 7 pm and Friday from 3 - 6 pm. We have discounts on House Margaritas and Dos XX Pitchers. We also have…

We discovered Cabrera's during the almost 2 year time span when our then go-to for Mexican, La Fiesta Grande in So. Pasadena, closed and their new location on Glenarm/Marengo opened. We tried a multitude of Pasadena places, including Mijares, Casa del Rey, Margaritas and El Torito (gringo!). Cabrera's was our fave, with a better location for us vs. La Fiesta. Their menu extended beyond the "ordinary", and I liked their plating/presentation. A slice of cucumber or orange adds a lot to a mound of shredded lettuce garnish. Mind you, our family fave for +40 years is still El Tepeyac in Boyle Heights, but that's quite a shlep. Cabrera's has also been around awhile (40 years) and now has 3 locations--Arcadia (the original), Pasadena and Duarte. All are owned/co-owned by 2 families, one named Cabrera. The Pasadena location is near the corner of Lake and Orange Grove, next to popular breakfast spot The Reyn, with which it shares a rear parking lot. All locations have a full bar. I have ordered off the regular menu, breakfast menu and Happy Hour bar menu. The breakfast menu is mostly offered on weekends when they open at 10 am, but you can ask for it weekdays at 11 am opening. My fave dish is the chilaquiles. As stated before, their all-day menu has some unique items, but I stick with the more gringo choices. Their chile rellenos used to be quite large, with the poblano chile clearly visible. They're a bit smaller and more generic now, but still fine. We order it as a 2 or 3-item combo or a la carte. Note their complimentary chips and salsa comes with 2 salsas, one red and one dark green (smoky and quite spicy). Lately we have been coming here for their Tuesday or Wednesday specials. Tuesdays is of course Taco Tuesday, and I love their crispy beef tacos. They have a special avocado salsa on Tuesdays. Every Wednesday, a certain dish is 50% off for the entire month if you order a soft drink, a great value. The most recent specials were fish tacos and steak or chicken fajitas, both delish. As AARP members, we usually arrive at 11 am opening. Inevitably either Christian and/or Guillermo, scions of the 2 founding families, are on duty then (Christian is the Pasadena manager)--shout outs to both of them! We are very comfy and happy with our newish go-to for Mexican food.

They have plenty of TVs, so it's a fun spot to grab a bite and watch soccer. The main reason I've been coming back is Taco Tuesday. The tacos are around $2 each, come with a decent amount of meat, and they also give you chips and salsa. They usually have carne asada, chicken, carnitas, and chorizo. I can normally eat about 4 to 5 tacos and be pretty stuffed, so I think it's a great deal and definitely worth stopping by on Tuesdays. I've had some of their other menu items before, and they were just okay. But between the Taco Tuesday special and all the TVs for watching games, I've definitely found myself coming back more often. If you're looking for a casual place to catch a soccer match or other sporting events and grab some affordable tacos, this is a solid spot.

My group of friends and I went during the World Cup craziness. I can imagine how crazy busy they might have been before we arrived but I'm glad the quality of service we received was good. I went with a seltzer and it was amazing (especially coming from another bar I wanted something light haha & no I was not driving). I liked their hard seltzers with fun flavors as jicama, tamarindo and passionfruit. I didn't like so much their signature Yerba Mate Pale Ale, but thought it was an interesting concept. The happy hour special is Monday all day and Tuesday-Friday open until 6pm $2 off full pours. Very family friendly, I always see a couple tables with children and dogs at them. Maybe I'm getting to be an old fuddy duddy but I hate when parents let their kids go free range. Screaming and running around like the establishment is a park these kids becoming trip hazards. There needs to be a revamp of their board game collection. There three boxes of games that looked incomplete or used up, not good with such games as Scrabble and Pictionary. It really hits the spot when you're craving comforting, flavorful Mexican food. The chips are fresh, the salsa is good, and the menu has offerings that feel more authentic and varied than a lot of other places. I especially appreciate that they have Yucatán cuisine options, which you do not always see at every Mexican restaurant. I am also very fussy with mole and typically do not like it at all, but I actually really enjoy the mole from El Portal. It has been a real eye-opener for me and honestly inspired me to give mole another shot elsewhere. One thing to keep in mind: a lot of the combo plates are smothered in delicious red sauce and plenty of cheese, so if you are not a big cheese person, just be aware before ordering. The enchiladas are good, though sometimes they could use a little more sauce, as the tortillas can come out a bit dry. The margaritas are tasty, but they do feel a little small for the price (Roughly $16 for a 8oz glass?!) The staff are friendly, the vibe is nice, and overall the food is consistently good. The only other heads-up is that some of the tables and booths are pretty small, so it can feel a little cramped in the main dining room. Also, **make sure you get your parking validated**. This is important because if you do not, the parking lot can be extremely expensive. You can also look for street parking on Green Street. Still, El Portal is a spot I really enjoy and it is on our regular rotation of places to dine.

I thought that was a bit odd, but I guess it was to detract from unwelcomed guests (i.e. homless people)? Anyhow, we were seated right away and sat by the window which was nice! We were given the menus, but I had to specifically ask for the DineLA menu which I also thought was a bit odd since it seemed like they wanted us to order off their regular menu. Perhaps this was just an oversight. For starters, we ordered 1 of each that was offered: Ceviche Carretillero - Refreshing and brought me back to time spent in Peru! I preferred this option Salpicon - This was also refreshing and reminded me of chicken salad mix in a bowl though not sure I would order it without it being a part of a prix fixe. For the main course, we ordered: Saltado Salad - This had minimal protein and was not so satisfying when compared to a traditional lomo saltado, but the protein that was there was yummy. Aji Gallina - I really was excited to see this on their menu since I love this dish so much and don't see it offered too often at Peruvian restaurants. Though the sauce was good, the chicken was VERY dry and hard to chew (overcooked) so it took a while to finish this. In lieu of desserts, they offered Maracuya (passion fruit) and Chicha Morada (purple corn) juices which were yummy but the star of the show was their sangria which was delicious especially on a hot day. My only complaint about the sangria was that we were charged for 3 carafes when we only got 2. Once we identified this, we brought it up and just went ahead and enjoyed the 3rd one since we had already settled the bill. That being said, always double check your receipt!

I told them that I needed some time to understand some of the descriptions on the menu. They offered assistance explaining some of their unique dishes. I let them know that I was going to be taking all of the items to go. It was difficult to decide on only a few items. I knew I was going to be ordering for a couple days of great food. I decided on: Burrito Gordito Carne Asade Wet A Chicken and Beef Enchilada plate with red and green sauce with rice and beans. 1 Nachos (Chicken) with lots of cheese Taquitos ... Chicken, Beef, Pork with rice and beans While I waited for my order, I listened to the music playing in the background. There were a number of people that came in and picked up orders that they had phoned in or placed online. The staff was busy checking orders for pickup or taking care of the diners at the tables. They called my name and carefully double checked my order with me, before I left. When I arrived home, the fragrance of the fresh cooked food filled my kitchen. All the items were incredible! I was especially pleased with the cheese spice and flavor of the chicken nachos. I was able to add some of their fresh made salsa to add some extra kick. The enchiladas were incredible. The red and green sauce added color as well as flavor. The taquitos were also excellent. Filled with meat and flavor. The carne asada burrito was excellent. The flavor with the addition of some salsa and sauce was filled with meat. Meat was not just small shredded pieces but large flavorful bites. Well the main parts of my meal were exceptional so were the sides. The rice, the beans, the crisp tortilla chips, all added to this delightful eating experience. I will definitely be back to this hidden gem, located among some other great boutique stores and restaurants. The staff provided conversation as well as expertise. Lupita's is a great place to celebrate great food! It is easy to understand why they've been in business for such a long time. They truly take pride in their restaurant and their family's history.

This was actually our second attempt, the first time we showed up on a Saturday afternoon they were closed, despite their online hours saying otherwise. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and came back. Service was okay. The food? Disappointing. The shrimp cocktail was the whole reason we made the trip. It tasted watered down, had no seasoning, no lemon, and still had shell on the shrimp. It genuinely tasted like a pre-made Costco cocktail in red dyed water. The fajita plate (shrimp, beef, and chicken) was passable but nothing special. What really ended it for us were the hidden fees. We ordered the fajita plate $30 (+ taxes) a massive spread with a separate plate of rice and beans and they brought out THREE corn tortillas. THREE... I am Mexican. I have eaten at hundreds of restaurants in my lifetime and have never been given only three tortillas for a plate that size. We asked for more tortillas and were charged $4 with zero warning. It's not about the money it's the principle. The charge was never disclosed. When I brought it up with the owner, Lupita, she was dismissive and couldn't explain the reasoning it's not even homemade tortillas. You can literally buy 90 tortillas for $4 at a grocery store! She took off one of the charges but kept the other $2. Meanwhile, they offer unlimited chips and complimentary salsa without blinking. The inconsistency is baffling. We genuinely wanted to support this family-run restaurant we loved seeing the family come in together. But the disrespect during that conversation made it impossible to leave on good terms. Do yourself a favor and drive about a 1.5 miles down the street to El Metate. Their large shrimp cocktail is $15, is so flavorful, and the staff treats you like family. Their pozole is outstanding too. We found them on our first failed attempt to come here and we'll be going back to them exclusively from now on. We will never return to Lupita's and made it clear to not go there in our community thread with 15K people. Unless you like hidden fees and mediocre tasteless overpriced food then this is your place otherwise...don't come here.
