Overall quality of the food was good however it would have been a million times better had it only been hot! I ordered enchiladas, which is a dish I've ordered many times before. The plate came out with insane quickness and I was starving so I dug right in. I always start with the rice and beans with my chips then move on to the main dish. Since there is salad on top of the enchiladas I anticipate some coolness but usually followed by the heat of the enchiladas and sauce and melty cheese. No. Heat. Whatsoever. Barely lukewarm. The cheese on top was still in individual pieces. Looked like they were freshly grated at least. Ate a few more bites to see if it was warmed in the middle. No such luck. Someone came by and asked how the food was and I told them, COLD. I was told, Oh, that's probably because of the salad on top. I told the guy, no. The chicken isn't even warm. He asked to remake the dish but by then I was already full and honestly turned off by the dish. Nothing was done about the issue. No discount to the bill. Nothing. Visited for lunch on grand opening day. Wife and I looked forward to having a Mexican eatery close by and anxiously awaited its opening. The gold standard for us is El Huarcho's in Urbana. Service was incredible, probably the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant. From reading reviews of it's sister restaurant in Villa Grove seems that service is a staple for them. I got a lunch fajita special for $8.50 and a horchata for $2.50. Both tasted good, but the fajita came out on a plate with just refried beans and rice. Used to the usual cold spread of lettuce, tomato, sour cream. Also it just came with flour tortillas, would have like the choice of corn tortillas which some places offer. Also enjoy getting the fajitas on the sizzling plate. Compared to the other sit down Mexican eateries (El Toro, El Huarcho's, Dos Reales, etc.) price seemed a little above average for the food. Looking at the diner menu, most of items were $!0-$15. Service helped it stand out, but nothing else will give it an edge over other local places. Hidden fees, up charges galore and rude service. We went in there as a party of nine for a special occasion. We had four separate checks. On one check they charged for extra salsa for the table, and the excuse was that our part ate too much salsa. In my experience, chips and salsa has always been on the house at a Mexican restaurant. On our bill, we asked that they substitute shrimp for steak. They said no problem and did not mention an up charge. At the end of the meal the bill was up charged $6 for six shrimp. I have no problem with this, but would have liked to know that I was going to be charged for the substitution because I would have just added the shrimp instead of substituted it. When I mentioned this I was met with rude management. This is the second time we have ate here and both times have been unpleasant. I'd rather spend my hard earned money somewhere else! read more

Went there with my mom today. They misunderstood her order and didn't give her a salad that she asked for. Also added a soft shell taco with meat when she had ordered a vegetarian entree. What was truly amazing was the $3 charge for extra lettuce. I know things are more expensive now, but our bill came to $42 and that was due to extra charges for things that weren't even ordered. Probably won't go back for awhile due to staff not being attentive to their customers. Maybe we should have made a fuss about it there, but we didn't. We were there on a Sunday evening. Service was super-attentive & friendly. Guacamole is the creamy variety, so nothing special, but it tasted fresh. I'd order it again. The salsa was so good I could've eaten it with a spoon. I love fresh-tasting veggies, in any form. Hubby had the steak burrito, a huge one, drizzled with queso. It came with refried beans & Mexican rice. Refried beans are on the verge of liquid, rather than thick & pasty. He much preferred this thinner consistency. The beans also had a smoky taste, with a pleasant hint of chiorizo. My black beans, Mexican rice & quacamole... plus chips & salsa were a perfect vegetarian meal for a cool evening. The beans were perfectly cooked & full of flavor. Rice was flavorful, too, as well as light & fluffy. Hubby loved his steak burrito & wants to try the queso as a dip next time. My burrito came out lukewarm, no vegetables or beans just bland chicken in a tortilla covered in what tasted like unseasoned tomato sauce. The taco shell was stale. When I sliced into the chili relleno, water oozed out - it clearly came from a freezer. It was a soggy mess. With so many other excellent or even just decent places in town, I won't returrn. The few times we have ordered from restaurant we go to locally owned ones. We ordered take out on Friday. This place was packed and we only got half of the food we ordered. Ok, mistake on both sides. The problem was that since they use order numbers not names and the manager wasn't going to re-do the other half, because I didn't have the order number. He was not apologetic nor cooperative. My thought was that they could use the business, since El Toro has such a loyal customer base. Next time I will keep my loyalty to El Toro whose food is much better. read more

We tried El Rancho Grande because it is new and got good reviews. I had the chicken fajita quesadilla. The meat and veggies were tasty but quesadilla means cheese and I needed a microscope to find it. Tortilla was dry and it was served with beans (yuk) and a large portion of rice. No lettuce, tomato, guacamole or sour cream or cheese on top. My husband had the Acapulco which he enjoyed hence the 3 stars (mine was 2 stars). The chips were warm and good, salsa was okay. Service was efficient but certainly not friendly. I try all the new ones but I will stick with Dos Reales, lots of cheese in and drizzled on top of my fajita quesadilla and for same price I get lettuce, tomato, guacamole and sour cream. read more

I've only been to El Rancho Grande II twice, but it quickly is becoming my husband and my favorite Mexican restaurant! The staff is hospitable almost to a fault. The place is very clean and I really appreciate that! The salsa is delicious and comes in pretty large bowls. It's absolutely enough to share that you will be stuffed before the meal! They have a pretty standard Mexican restaurant variety. You'll find all the usuals here. It is definitely the Americanized version. My favorite is the fajitas. But they have a good taco salad too.
