After living in San Leandro for nearly 30 years, I finally stepped inside Galvin's Market and I am so glad I did. I have driven past it countless times without stopping, but this place is truly a hidden gem. From the moment you walk in, it feels inviting: clean, bright, and well organized. They have everything from meats, seafood, cheeses, and pastas to sandwiches and specialty groceries. There is also free parking in the back (90 minutes), which makes the visit stress-free. On this visit, I picked up a little bit of everything: The Hot Salami Sandwich (see photo) was incredible. Piled high with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar, and oregano. The oregano sealed the deal. It was one of the best sandwiches I have had in years. Cheese counter. They stock amazing selections such as Midnight Moon, Goat Gouda, and Prosciutto di Parma. I also grabbed a slice of Italian head cheese (photo). It was not quite as bold as the souse meat I grew up with, but it is delicious with crackers. Smoked Salmon. Sourced from Alaska, melt-in-your-mouth fresh and flavorful (photo included). You can tell they take seafood seriously. Mary's Organic Chicken Wings. The real MVP of my haul. I was thrilled to get two pounds of all flats (photo before and after cooking). I baked them at home, and they came out crispy, flavorful, and juicy. The aisles were stocked with pastas, sauces, and pantry goods, making it feel like a one-stop shop for both everyday items and specialty finds. Between the quality of the food, the thoughtful touches such as honoring my all-flats wing request, and the genuine neighborhood market vibe, Galvin's has officially earned a spot on my regular rotation. If you are in San Leandro and have not stopped by yet, do yourself a favor. Whether you are grabbing lunch, stocking up on meats and seafood, or exploring the cheese counter, Galvin's Market is worth the trip. Highly recommend! read more

I live in the neighborhood and have passed by Galvan Market so many times but never stopped in. One day I was planning to make pork chops and went to Trader Joe's, but they didn't have any. I remembered Galvan Market was a butcher shop, so I decided to swing by on my way home. One of the first things I appreciated was that they actually have their own parking lot behind the store. Given the location, I was expecting to circle around for street parking, so that was a nice surprise. The lot is limited to 45 minutes for customers, which is plenty of time to shop. I entered through the back and saw a deli counter right when I walked in, where you can order custom sandwiches. In the middle of the store there are shelves with seasonings and pantry items. Just a heads up, it's not a full grocery store so you won't find fresh produce here. On the opposite side, they have a full butcher section with fresh seafood and various meats. There was even a sign outside that mentioned fresh seafood every day. The guy who helped me at the counter was friendly and welcoming. I picked up two pork chops and was surprised they only came out to about six dollars. That's a great price, especially compared to the ones at Trader Joe's which usually cost me around ten. There were a few signs saying cash is preferred, but they do take credit cards. I felt a little guilty paying with a card for such a small amount, so I'll probably bring cash next time. I'm really glad I finally checked this place out. It's super convenient to have such a solid butcher shop right around the corner. Galven's is the best!!! Everybody is super nice, even to a plant-based eater like me who occasionally hosts meat eaters. I feel like I can ask anything and they are always thoughtful and service-oriented. They have helped me put together several charcuterie boards and I always bring my out-of-town guests to Galvan's to pick out whatever they want to grill. Also, when my husband stopped by to pick up some steaks for our dog's 5th birthday (silly, I know), the staff helped pick out the best, most gorgeous steaks for our girl's big day. :) read more

I really wish I could rate this place 5 stars, but unfortunately, I had a very poor experience here this past week. On Christmas Eve, I went in to get a nice cut of meat as a Christmas present for a family member. I do not eat and cook meat often, so I asked the butcher thinking he would help me pick something out. I also had my baby with me, and didn't double check what I was sold. Less than 24 hours later, my family opened up the roast I bought and it smelled bad like cheese. I was definitely sold an old cut of meat and I found out I was way overcharged for it. I believe the butcher took advantage of the fact that I did not know any better. I was naive and thought they'd have my best interest in mind instead of trying to pawn off an old cut while up charging. I always want to support local business, but unfortunately I will not be going back to Galvan's. read more

Being the Grandson of Spanish immigrants from Estepona Spain, that initially settled for a bit to Hilo Hawaii before reaching California like many other Spanish families, my connection to all the is Spanish is on high alert. Well that is of course when my Italian heritage is not calling me or pulling me into an Italian Deli, let's just say that! :) If you have ever entered the heavenly delights of an Italian Deli, you understand all the heavenly native Italian food smells in the air, right? Well at Galvan market, this is pretty close to that. I have been hearing about Galvan market in San Leandro for years. I was reminded again a few time by the posts of Mike Munoz of the Hawaiian Spaniard page on FB, where I remain as one of the administrators. I always knew for sure, this someday this would be a must visit on my list. Not living on this side of the bay, the opportunity is not as plentiful, but since I was already there today, I figured, hey no time like the present. I was but a jump away from 1275 Mac Arthur Blvd in San Leandro where they are located. The owner Joe Galvan, a Spanish American whose family on both sides hails from Spain is very proud of his raices (heritage) and what his store brings to the community. He is a very friendly and helpful owner. You can tell he really cares about not only his presentation and business and placing the customer first. It takes a special type of person to be able to serve the public with patience and kindness. He has that magic with people. You will find Spanish products from Spain. These would include some of the finest cheeses and chorizos, hams, saffron, pimenton, spices, an array of Spanish olive. So again this is just to name a few. And when you are talking about a fine Malaga wine, like Moscatel, he has it here !! But it does not just stop there, you will also find many other delicacies such as the Spanish almond Turron..every true Spaniard loves a great turron!! You need to come visit the store while you are in the area. And oh man, he has a smoker in the back where he smokes up beef tri tips..the smell in the air is a little bit of heaven! Not only will you find Spanish products here, but you will find products of our near Mediterranean brothers, such as products from Italy and Greece and Portugal. This place was a heaven send today, when this partial Spaniard was looking to connect with culture and the native foods of that land, and of course of the neighbors lands next door. It has a new owner and you can tell the difference. Jason, the new owner has done an amazing job with keeping original but adding some new touches to make it more inviting- From the friendly and attentive staff to how clean it is. The meat selection is vast and they have a great cheese selection too. They also carry a lot of local products now, like Oakland dust and Everette and Jones. Don't even get me started on the sandwiches they make- you can watch them slice the meat and make it in front of you, minus the subway gimmicks. This is my go to spot for high quality meat and super friendly service. This is a couple cities over from me but I make the trip because I can't find the same quality with this great of a selection. You can't beat seeing familiar faces that are very knowledgeable about their offerings and give suggestions on how to prepare. I've gotten tri tip, prime rib, ham, corned beef among the many other items they offer. You can't go wrong and will find what you need here for special occasions or everyday meals. They have seasoning, sauces and other items that can help complete the meal too. They also have a deli and their sandwiches so good! Definitely worth a lunch stop. There is no seating for eating in, so more like grab and go but they do have parking which is very convenient. read more

I have been to this quaint corner market on many occasions. I have always gone here for their AMAZING SANDWICHES!!! I have eaten many sandwiches and the ones here are definitely in my top 3 for the bay area. I am an Italian sandwich lover. The fresh sliced meat and cheeses (to order) paired with fresh baked local bread is delicious! The meats melt in your mouth. Very similar to Lucca's in CV- but the meats at Galvans have a different piquancy. The flavor of the Italian meats are bolder. They also have a slew of specialty European pantry goods, BBQ staples and of course the lovely butcher department. I really appreciate the staff here and you can see they take pride in what they do. I was looking for a specialty butcher shop in the area and I stumbled upon a hidden gem. Although I heard its been here forever but the current owners are really killing it. Every visit there's customers here, they got their own little parking area, easy to find right off the freeway exit. They dry age certain cuts, always have wagyu on tap, and recently I've been ordering some ground meat for my barbecue at home. They are happy to accommodate special requests if you give them 2 days advance notice. I highly suggest you call in and ask them to make you 5lbs or more of the beef/bacon ground meat. This place rocks. My wife turned me onto this place about 4 years ago. It's small but it's the perfect place to pick up that special meal. Don't quote me on this but i wanna say they start just a little while ago carrying Bone-In-Ribeye. For the longest time it was Ribeye without the bone. My wife loves her bone-in. Oh my gentle jesus. We wanted to celebrate last night, so i went there and was able to tell the butcher exactly how thick i wanted the ribeye cut. i told him 3" thick. The price was not cheap, but a said to my wife, if you want an orgasmic experience thru food, you usually have to pay for it. This place is not safeway, it's not 1.75per pound say for pork shoulder, it's higher then that and rightfully so. The quality is excellent. They also have a nice selection of interesting ingredients/items to accompany a meal. fresh frozen pastas also. The other thing to take advantage of is across the street is Estudillo Produce which is really amazing especially for its size. The employees were engaging & friendly. We enjoyed Galvan's. We don't live in the neighborhood but encourage the locals to support. We both would like to return to enjoy the deli counter. Unfortunately, we were still full from lunch. We picked up a few items; pasta, cookies, fig jam. The store is easy to shop. Very clean. Prices are posted for everything so no guessing. I've been pleased in the past with their deli sandwiches but will not be returning after my most recent experience. The store smelled really bad - like meat gone off. That should have been enough warning to me not to purchase anything but it was NYE and we really wanted to keep our crab tradition. Luckily I only ordered one but I ended up paying $33 for off crab. I took it straight home and kept it in the fridge but it stunk so badly when I opened the bag! The stores been closed since so I have no clue if I will be able to get a refund. I feel genuine sadness for people who love meat (Beef and Pork) but don't seek out quality product. Quality has a higher price tag but the value is in the flavor. In this respect, Galvan's consistently delivers as a Butcher. I've purchased numerous cuts of Beef and Pork over the last 2 years, probably shopped there 12 times and the meat is consistently quality. It's definitely not the cheapest but that's not what anyone should be seeking when it comes to red meat. The staff is also incredibly friendly and helpful at this veteran-owned business. Quality seafood, although a bit pricey. The staff at the butcher counter are VERY knowledgeable about their products. I pick their brains about cooking times, methods, preparation suggestions, etc., and they are so friendly and clearly enjoy imparting their expertise. My one complaint (and the reason for 4 out of 5 stars): Their hours. Being closed on Sundays and Mondays, in particular. With my work schedule, those are the two best days for me to patronize this store. If they were open either of those days, I would be there weekly.
