This restaurant is a hidden gem. The drinks are amazing, food is delicious, the environment is friendly and versatile, and it's also family owned and run which gives it a personal touch. We came for lunch on a Sunday, and it wasn't crowded. It was a great place to bring my baby and is very kid friendly - there was space for him in his high chair, and the restaurant was large enough where we didn't worry about bothering others. At the same time, the space is cool with lots of screens and a pool table, so it works for eating with friends too. I saw a big group of friends there having drinks together. They mentioned they host private events and I can see the space being great for that. Drinks: The drinks were a surprise to me with how good they were. I was really not expecting that. The hibiscus sour was recommended and I loved it. It was not too sweet and actually not sour (which I thought it would be). It's a pretty pink drink with egg white and is super well balanced. The lime margarita was also delicious. Food: We loved the burger. It's a double smash burger style with a great sauce. As good or better than what you get at burger specializing joints. We were surprised because we didn't expect to order a burger since we thought of the place as a Mexican restaurant. It's homey comforting food, and I like how they have a range of choices for everyone's mood. For example they had a Caesar wrap on the menu which while not Mexican food, was tempting me for lunch. Our friends got the quesabirria and torta which they already really liked. You must order the Dubai chocolate strawberry dessert. It's one of the most delicious things I've ever had. Again while not traditional Mexican food, I like how they just have crowd pleasers. We learned that they make the pistachio cream on the dessert from scratch after doing a lot of recipe tweaking. It definitely paid off. Do not skip this! Family owned and run: Especially in the suburbs which can be overrun with chains, it's a great feeling to go to and support a family owned business, especially when it's so tasty. Chris and Rigo are brothers that you'll see serving and bartending. Their mom cooks some (or all?) of the food and their dad is around too. They go above and beyond to make their customers feel welcome, and this really is a different feeling than when you go to a large corporation-backed restaurant. It's very impressive to me that each of them does so much. We will definitely be back! Overall I highly recommend you come here for a home-cooked experience, where there's something for everyone. read more

Surprisingly massive restaurant! Inviting bar & lots of enticing choices on the menu. We started w a couple margaritas & familiarized ourselves w the menu. The margaritas were perfect..not too sour, not too sweet, just straightforward & satisfying. We got the chips n guacamole. Big deal. Easy to get right, usually not too exciting. These chips were so freaking tasty all on their own, & the avocados were sooooo ripe & nutty & creamy, absolutely succulent. & also came w a salsa verde which was bangin. A standard dish hit totally outta the park. (Btw Cubs game playing on all of their several tvs). Then we shared a torta al pastor. Again a standard everyday run of the mill order. But this was outrageously good!!! Delicious meat & the rice n beans were also beautifully executed, & a really well dressed peppery salad too!!! Just so good. Dubai strawberries as a dessert too was also just great. The strawberries were so juicy & ripe. W pistachio & Nutella cream on them, cmon. The place is huge & stayed pretty empty throughout but I'm not sure why bc it was so great. Maybe lower the lighting, is my only note. It's so good. read more

Went here for the first time with a friend. While you'll find many traditional Mexican favorites, we were impressed with the menu's diversity along with the quality of food and drink. After a long visit to MacNeal hospital across the street I was excited to find this restaurant, checked Yelp and was even happier to see great reviews. My daughter and I arrived around 2pm, I was starving as I had to fast. We stood for a few minutes at entry and a young man brought us to our table. There was a couple behind our table and one other family in restaurant. Young man took our drink order, then a few minutes after a lady took our meal order...then didn't see him or the lady for over 30 minutes. I flagged him and asked him for our drinks. He brought them over immediately, Cucumber/lime drink - it was delicious and refreshing. 15 minutes after a drink the lady comes to our table offering free quesabirria tacos for our wait. But we had no silverware, no napkins. Had to request them. Quesabirria tacos were OUTSTANDING. But 30 minutes after that, still no meal. After being there more than an hour I informed the young man that we had to leave and offered to pay for the cucumber lime drinks, but he said no - you don't have to pay. And that's it. No apology, no explanation. So disappointed as I was looking forward to finding a new, good restaurant to come back to. But I will not after this experience. read more

I went to El Rey for the first time today and it was a large restaurant with TVs & music going on. I knew it had a 4.9 rating with good reviews, I ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce and I must say that it was incredonly delicious and the service was excellent, Chris repeatedly asked me how was the food and if need anythin, Chris was very courteous and hospitable, then introduced me to his father & brother(family owned) which is very important. I decided to celebr my sister & my bmirth days this Sunday.I will spread the word to the public. Thank you Chris & his family for great service and great tasty food. read more

El Rey Restaurant & Bar absolutely delivered tonight. The Guacamole & Chips were fresh and vibrant -- clearly made in-house with great balance. The El Rey margaritas were excellent: smooth, refreshing, and not overly sugary. The Salmon Tequilero was perfectly cooked with a beautiful tortilla crust and a lime-tequila butter sauce that added richness without overpowering the dish. The mango relish brought brightness and balance. The Carne Asada Tampiqueña was equally impressive -- flame-grilled skirt steak with excellent char, tender throughout, and served with rice, beans, enchiladas, grilled cebollitas, and fresh salad. A complete and satisfying plate. Chris provided attentive, welcoming service from the start, and when Rigo came by later, it was clear how much pride and care goes into the restaurant. That level of ownership and hospitality makes a difference. You can taste the quality and intention in every dish. Berwyn is lucky to have El Rey. We'll definitely be back. read more
