The pesto sauce for the tallarin was missing something maybe some pine nuts and some parmesan. Seco de carne - this was delicious except that it took forever to come out. Everyone was else was done with their dinner when my friends plate came out. Ceviche - fish had strong fishy taste which to me means not fresh fish. Also need more lime and cilantro. Tallarin verde con apanado - Well they forgot it was apanado and served a flank steak was that was very well done. If you know good quality Peruvian food, you will be able to notice the difference what quality of food is served in this restaurant which was not that great. El Rocoto is located in a strip mall, sandwiched between a Ranch 99 Market, and Daiso discount store. There's nothing out front to state its Peruvian (I always assumed it was Mexican, my bad). My normal go-to Peruvian place is Pollo Inka, located across the street, but a fellow yelper said to give El Rocoto a try. We arrived on a Saturday at 5:30 pm, and the place was pretty busy. We had most of our party of 8, and they sat us early. While waiting for our straggling 2 people (who were next door shopping at Daiso!) we ordered the Piqueo Andido appetizer, served only on weekend. The description said: Peruvian appetizer of olluco, cau-cau, and carapulcra (potato dish, tripe with rice, and pork stew). No price posted on the sign, but it was $21. Ouch a bit pricey. Our server took our drink orders and then our food order. I glanced at the menu and saw they had Tallarin Saltado-beef (spaghetti beef) and a Tallarin Trozos Pollo, which the description said stir fry oriental, chicken chow mein. In all of the other Peruvian places I've been to, I casually say the Tallarin Pollo, the spaghetti one. I did say that but apparently something was lost in translation and 2 of us received the skinny chow mein noodles, not spaghetti. When I brought it to my server's attention, she looked genuinely upset and commented she was going to show me on the menu what I ordered. I apologized (as it was a miscommunication on both our ends) and said I wanted the spaghetti noodles. That pretty much ruined the rest of our evening, because I was too afraid to speak to her for the rest of the night, as she seemed upset at "my" mistake of not knowing what dish I wanted. Aside from that, the food came out great. Portions are generous but not as big as other places I've been to. With that being said, some people may say its "quality" over quantity, and at the prices they charge, sure, people can say that. However, Pollo Inka across the street tastes just as good, fair prices, and they also give a bowl of soup on the house. The prices at Rocoto isn't cheap. It is pricey including their drinks. Sodas are $3.50 and coffee is even higher at $4.00. OMG I got myself another refill at that price. Giving this place 3 1/2 stars for the confrontation I had to encounter and the price/food quality/ quantity ratio. I also didn't appreciate them slapping an automatic gratuity on our bill. In California, you can't add the auto -tip anymore. The server would have gotten a bigger tip if they didn't do that. But.. since they added the tip, that's exactly what they got. Would I come back again? Yes, because its clean, and the presentation of the restaurant is nicer that Inka. But I'd probably cross the street for Inka for my every day comfort food. read more

This is located at a great spot. There is shopping available near the area, main street, and also a lot of food options around it. When I walked in, the restaurant seemed very nice and clean. The staff/service was ok. We received bread with butter, however the bread we first received was as hard as a rock! We then had to request a fresh order and thr 2nd one we received was then nice and fresh. I ordered my favorite Peruvian dish "Lomo Saltado". I have had it many times and never fails. Sadly, it failed this time. I personally will not return to this location for Peruvian food. The meat was so chewy! El Rocoto has some great authentic Peruvian dishes but having been in Peru many times and raised on Oeruvian cuisine, this misses the mark slightly. Many of the dishes miss the mark on the spices such as the Arroz Chaufa that lacks the soy sauce and he Papas a la Huancaina that lacks a slight spice that typically makes the dish unique. The pisco sour should use jarabe and not a singer mixture but to the unconventional palate, it will hit the mark. Service was very good and the bread with the special sauces very good. Overall, a great experience but wish they served picarones during the week mareas of weekends. Buen provecho! read more

My family and I have been going to El Rocoto since it opened. With that said it will be awhile before I go back. The last two visits have been by far the worst experience in eating the same dish I ever eat there , saltado de mariscos. The last visit I had asked for the dish to be jugoso meaning juicy. Instead it was dry and oily. This time as always I asked for no shrimp since I'm allergic to it and instead get more fries in replacement for the shrimp and little squid and octopus. The seasoning was not the same. It lacked flavor and seafood. For a $26 dish, it is no longer worth it for me. Their beef and ahi are very good but they charge for a second round of bread. I am very disappointed since it was my go to place for years. No replacement dish or discount in price. Nothing. Quality has decreased and prices increased. read more

I ordered a lomo saltado to go. The service was pretty quick and the host was nice. However, the food is horrible! I open my container when I get home and the presentation is just ew. But you know don't judge a book by its cover. I try the meat, flavorless. I try the fries, dry & flavorless. The rice doesn't even have any flavor !! The only reason it has any type of flavor is because of the small amount of juice from the onions. Most Peruvian dishes come with a green sauce this restaurant provides the green sauce and an orange sauce. The green sauce is okay the orange sauce is just irrelevant. I don't even know what I was supposed to eat the orange sauce with. I'm also a little upset at the amount of green sauce in the container. I've been to plenty of Peruvian restaurants and I've always been curious about this place because it's so close to home. The ceviche mixto was nice and tangy the way I like it with halibut, shrimp, octopus, squid in Leche de Tigre sauce, Peruvian corn and glazed sweet potato yam and sliced onions. I could eat this everyday. Latin sushi.. Chaufa which is Chinese style fried rice is good but a bit oily for me. Came with scallops, shrimp and squid. I like my fried rice light and fluffy. This version is a bit dense. The lomo saltado, a Peruvian staple, was just average. The beef was a bit bland and lacked the tangy lemon flavor I was looking for. I actually enjoyed this place, although my friends did not as their food came very dry and lacking flavors. The chicken that they got was so hard and dry they didn't finish their meal and just munched on some fries. On the other hand, my Aji de Gallina came perfectly. The food here is pretty yummy and I'd highly recommend the place. We were lucky at the time to dine outside. There were partitions between different parties so that was piece of mind since they weren't six feet from us. The lane where people can typically walk through was sort of blocked off so they had to walk around the outside of the partial fence. I'm a big fan of Peruvian cuisine and since I haven't found a good Peruvian restaurant in San Diego in our way to LAX airport we decided to stop and eat here, this restaurant was recommended by Peruvian friends. The place is nice and service is good but I noticed that they have a health grade of B. We ordered: -Chaufa with beef.- this is fried rice Peruvian style and it was very good. -Lomo saltado (tenderloin option).- meat was soft but not a lot and you pay extra for the tenderloin, the dish lacked flavor and at least a quarter of the plate was onions so it was ok. -Pescado a lo macho.- good, the fish was very good and the ají salsa was good. - Spaghetti verde.- we ordered it as a side dish, it is flavored with pesto and it was good. Prices are so so, price a little bit more than average. In summary, food is good but not worth the drive from San Diego unless you are on your way to LAX airport or you live in the area but I'll come back if I'm around the area. read more

(The mood struck, what can I say!) The family voted to have their meals hail from El Rocoto, but they wanted to eat at home. Their location being around the corner, it wasn't too tasking to phone in the orders for pick up. "It'll be ready in about 25 minutes." Skipped my usual Suprema de carne and decided to try their saltado de mariscos. So there's only one HUGE difference between dining in and take out: the presentation of the food. (Of course it's much prettier at the restaurant!) But the taste is still incredible! I'm glad I tried something new. There was a good balance in portion between the seafood and the onions and tomatoes. Seasoning was ON POINT, so yummy! I would highly recommend this dish! Good food! Seriously it's a gem. I typically eat the same things because they're that good. The pescado a lo macho is my favorite and it seems to be most customers favorite As you'll see it coming out the kitchen frequently. It's a rich thick sauce (maybe cream based) with a mix of seafoods. You can swap the rice for other sides which I'm grateful for! The lomo saltado's meat is cooked medium and I have yet to get it overcooked. I still have lots of exploring to do with the menu and I have faith that it won't be disappointing. Doñde puñeta he estado (Where the f*ck have I been) strikes again! I have heard about El Rocoto (two locations that I know about - Cerritos & Gardena), but I have never been here. The location I went to is located at Artesia & Normandie in Gardena. El Rocoto serves authentic Peruvian fare. They offer several ceviches, parihuela salvaje (Peruvian bouillabaisse), and many traditional Peruvian entrees, like lomo saltado, arroz con mariscos (like paella), and chaufa (Peruvian fried rice). We ordered ceviche mixto ($14.50 - Halibut, shrimp, octopus and squid in leche de tigre: A spicy citrus sauce), and anticuchos de pollo ($10 - Skewers of marinated chicken breast w/ Peruvian corn & chimichurri, crispy potatoes and huacatay (Peruvian black mint) sauce. In addition, we had bread served w/ traditional aji de verde and salsa huancaína (spicy cheese sauce). I have not seen the latter sauce in several Peruvian restaurants in LA and OC. You would be remiss if you have never had a Peruvian ceviche. Peruvians make the best ceviche of all Latin American countries IMHO. El Rocoto's version had a lot of fresh seafood, and there was good heat emanating from the citrusy, leche de tigre due to the habañero peppers. This representation of a classic Peruvian dish was better than the recently closed Mo-Chica in DTLA: 5 Stars. Likewise, the anticuchos were also excellent. Normally, chicken breast is dry, but not El Rocoto's version. The meat was nicely marinated, and the huacatay sauce was a nice surprise. Secondarily, the sides are not something you normally see at other Peruvian places, so it was a nice change of pace. I really enjoyed the Peruvian corn. The service from Gabriel was very good. He was quick and efficient, and refilled our water glasses w/o being asked. The food arrived quickly: 4 Stars. The ambiance is nicer compared to El Pollo Inka, but it is still located in a strip mall: 4 Stars. Nearby El Pollo Inka also serves Peruvian, but EPI is McDonalds while El Rocoto is Umami Burger. The food at El Rocoto is on par with Picca in West LA, w/o having to drive there and without all the fanfare. I can't wait to come back and try other dishes. I am glad El Rocoto does not cater to the lunch crowd w/ cheap prices, and mediocre food. I would rather pay a little more and sample more authentic Peruvian cuisine compared to EPI. read more

Yesterday my family and I decided to go to El Rocoto since my mom introduced us to this restaurant a while ago. My sister loves the complementary bread with butter, and my mom and I love the green and orange sauces that come with it. My brother ordered the Salchipapa. I ordered the Saltado de Pollo. It was fresh, hot, and it had extremely good flavor. It had a generous amount of chicken, and my mom also ordered Maracuyá for my sister and I to try it out. It tasted delicious! Even though the restaurant was small, I loved the fact that they were playing Salsa/Cumbia songs in the background which reminded me to El Salvador . Lastly, our waitress was attentive and fast with our order. We made sure to leave a generous tip for him. We will definitely come back and spread the voice about how better the Peruvian food is here compared to El Pollo Inka. Regardless of the higher price, it was worth it. read more

Say what? I have not written a review for El Rocoto yet, say it ain't so? Ever since my coworker recommended El Rocoto to me years ago, I been here with family and friends numerous times. I'm quite surprised I have yet to do Yelp review but alas better late than never ;). El Rocoto is one of our favorite go-to Peruvian spots in the South Bay. The atmosphere is nice and the service is pretty well. Their food is yummy and the portion size is huge! They give complimentary warm bread with rocoto sauce (orange sauce) and aji sauce (green sauce). The rocoto sauce is slightly spicier than the aji sauce but both are very good. The bread and sauce is enough reason to come here. They are a wonderful combo together. There's two dishes that I seem to always get. (I switch between the two depending on what I'm in the mood for hehe). I always either get the lomo saltado or the tallarin verde (pesto spaghetti). The lomo saltado is superb! What is not to love about tender strips of sirloin mixed with onions, tomatoes and french fries marinated in vinegar, soy sauce and spices. It is so good here! The tallarin verde is another winner The pesto spaghetti can come with your choice of breaded chicken or steak. The chicken and steak that comes with this is huge. It fills almost the whole plate. It is great with the flavorful pesto spaghetti. Prices are a little high but their portions are so big that it will last you two meals! I always end up with a to-go box. During weekdays, they have lunch specials but none on weekends. They also have some happy hour specials during the week. Sorry El Pollo Inka, you're no longer my favorite Peruvian restaurant in the South Bay. Why you may ask? Because El Rocoto has something you don't have.....Lucuma Daiquiri!! After coming back from Peru last July, I've been obsessed with this fruit from Peru. If you've never tried it, the flavor is hard to describe but it has sort of a caramel-y taste to it. They also serve lucuma ice cream here, I'm assuming they used this for their daiquiri. I've had their ceviche, calamari, lomo saltado, fried yucca, and even an oxtail pasta dish. Their arroz con pollo is also very good with the cilantro sauce. They also have the Chifa style menu, which is their take on Chinese food. I saw tons of Chifa style places in Peru and it is pretty similar to what El Rocoto has. I've never had problems with service every time that I've been here. Prices I think are a tad more expensive than El Pollo Inka but I think the food is better. This place definitely makes me miss Peru. read more

Compare to the few Peruvian restaurants I've tried so far, El Rocoto was the best tasting one in South Bay area. My favorite is always the lomo saltado. It stir fried mix of beef steak, red onions, tomatoes, french fries and rice. I've also tried their Pesto pasta w/beef steak, Pescado, and lamb shank. They are all delicious entrees. The serve you complimentary hot bread and butter. The spices and bold flavor in their food definitely leaves you wanting to come back again! Easy parking. The restaurant was pretty full, but luckily there was one last table for two open, so we were seated immediately! Service was friendly, and our food came out pretty fast. Bread: This deserves its own category! As we looked over the menu, our server brought us a basket of warm rolls, slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. With it, came two dipping sauces: Aji Verde (Green) and an Orange sauce. The Aji Verde is a little spicy, and the heat builds as you keep eating it. The bread was so good that we couldn't help asking for more! Food: - Arroz Con Mariscos - Rice simmered in saffron wine sauce with squid, mussels, shrimp, octopus, and scallops. This dish has an excellent flavor with a surprisingly large amount of seafood! They give you a lime and lemon slice on the side to squeeze over the rice, if you desire. I really liked the hint of citrus combined with the seafood. - Lomo Saltado - My first time having lomo saltado, and I thought it was really good! This dish consists of stir-fried beef, onions, tomatoes, and fried potatoes (fries) with rice. The flavor of the combination of ingredients was on point, but the beef was a little tougher and chewier than I would have liked. Maybe I'll try the Saltado de Pollo next time! Food is very good and is 5-stars in my opinion. I've been here many times. Service is probably 4-stars. Staff forgets my orders sometimes but they're friendly and resolve any issues very quickly. But this review is getting 3-stars mostly because of the restaurant's new "Round to the nearest nickel" policy. I get what they're doing, trying to simplify the change. I rather not have to give or receive pennies back, but I usually pay with credit card so it's never a consideration. But this is not something I signed up for. Bank of America did this rounding to the next dollar thing, but that money goes into your savings account. These extra pennies aren't going to charity, they're going straight to the owner's pockets. As a math and statistics guy, I get that it works out to be the same if I eat there a million times--sometimes they take a few pennies, sometimes they give a few pennies; but I don't eat there a million times. Just charge me what your menu says, no more, no less. Went out to dinner with a friend.. and in true fashion, we didn't know where we wanted to go, so he asked if I wanted to try a Peruvian place.. sure, why not? We walked in a little before their closing time (sorry to the chef and staff) but made it in time for last call. I ended up ordering the Oxtail Fettuccine and my friend got the Arroz Con Mariscos. What can I say? Absolutely no complaints. The oxtail was braised perfectly, fall off the bone meat with just a simple tug from my fork. The fettuccine is not like an Italian fettuccine, it was not overcome by a Parmesan smell or flavor, but was a pleasant rich thick white sauce.. I only wish there was something on the platter that would lighten the richness, as both on one plate was almost too much. Also, the portions are huge--next time, I'll split an entree. I tried my friend's arroz con mariscos.. it was so good. The added lime and lemon they provide to squeeze on top just adds to balancing out the saffron rice with all the seafood. So good. Again, too much food. We also ordered fried plantains, which were delicious.. their plantains were sweet and fried perfectly. I will definitely be back.. I definitely want more of everything I've tried, it will be difficult to want to try something new. This restaurant is the true definition of a 5 star restaurant, and it really can't get any better! I drove an hour away from Rowland Heights just to go get real, legit, Peruvian food since there is none near my parents' house and I was pretty impressed. Parking is easy to find, there's a big lot and not too many cars even though it is located in a relative big shopping center. The restaurant itself is very big too. It's spacious and nicely decorate- it has a touch of Peru but it also manages to look classy and modern inside. I really liked the atmosphere. The menu is a great selection and prices are average. I highly recommend the Maracuya "Peruvian Passion Fruit Drink". It's sweet and tangy- perfect flavor. I went with a lomo saltado and paid around $15 but I was certainly pleased because all my meat and veggies were marinated so well. The meat itself was tender and juicy- al dente. Came here to celebrate my dad's birthday. This was my first time trying Peruvian food. They gave us some bread with butter as an appetizer. We ordered their beef saltado. It was pretty good. Definitely the must try when you eat here. It had lots of tomatoes, onions, and tomatoes. The beef was medium-rare I believe. It was chewy, but good enough. We also got their fried rice, called "chaufa especial" I believe. It was my favorite dish. Although honestly, I've noticed that most rice/fried rice dishes from a lot of cuisines kinda taste alike. For dessert, I got their cake. Sorry, I forgot what it's called! But it's the only cake they have. They didn't give me a menu for their dessert options, but rather, she brought each dessert (a display) to our table and described each one. Anyway, the cake was good! But for those who have a sweet tooth, I'm sorry to inform you that this cake isn't sweet at all. The service was a bit slow...but SUPER nice. I'm a big fan of Peruvian food. El Rocoto has been on my radar for some time since moving to the South Bay. So happy I got to share this experience with some girlfriends who also enjoys Peruvian food just as much as I do. Unlike El Pollo Inka's atmosphere, this was a perfect place for a casual girls get together dinner. While you wait for your food, they serve you a hot dinner roll (like mini french baguettes) with two yummy dipping sauces. The dinner roll looks hard, but actually quite soft once you break it open. The orange-y sauce has a tomato taste with a slight kick to it. The green sauce has an avocado taste with an even power spicy kick to it. Generous portions! Definitely can be shared. Arroz con mariscos: seafood fried rice: Delicious!! I enjoy everything seafood, especially Peruvian seafood dishes. You get a piece of seafood in every scoop. Aji de gallina: shredded chicken in a walnut type sauce with rice. I had a taste of it. It was very good, I'm just not a big fan of shredded chicken. (I like bite sizes, haha). Pescado a lo macho: my order: packed with seafood in an aji amarillo (not too sure what that is) creamy sauce on a fish fillet with rice. It was so delicious, I could have eaten it all in one sitting, but I didn't wana be the only fatty finishing my plate. The creamy sauce wasn't too heavy, tasted great over rice. So much seafood, I was in heaven. Friendly service. Good place for family dinner. There's so many amazing items on the menu that I must come back to try them all.
