We were heading back to the Bay Area and had a long drive ahead of us. We agreed on no fast food but we didn't know the area? Again with the help of Siri we discovered this great Peruvian restaurant. You drive into this strip mall, but don't drive too fast or you will slide right past this wonderful place. They do have an outdoor dining area set aside. How ever seating is limited. My tip of the day, is have someone in your party , go get in line for a table, while you park the car! We got lucky, my wife was already sitting at a table, after I found a parking spot. The staff here work like a well oiled machine! The service was very good. We never had to wait long for anything. Plus the food was really very good! They have an array of sauces to complement your meal. It was early afternoon and sunny, I did enjoy watching people going about here and there. As there are many Asian themed businesses here this is a kind of place , that if you lived nearby, you would not ever be very far from a great meal experience! As we were almost finished dining, a line began forming. Some people called ahead, these are the To - go folks. They waited inside their cars. 10 -12 minutes then poof! Chicken Saltado $20 - recommended by waiter as most ordered? High blood pressure stir fry. Made with tons of soy sauce, sesame/canola oil to give white rice its color. I barely use a soy packet for 1 lb of sashimi. Eating this is like drinking a sauce of soy sauce that is drenched in the rice and fries. Very little meat (less than a thigh piece of chicken) and it was overcooked. Vegetables were few (1/4 onion, tomato). Most (1/2) of the stir fry was French fries soaked in soy sauce. Unsure why groups/parties line up to eat here? Maybe wait is long that it gave an impression of a line forming to eat here. I had better tasting food at the Peruvian farmers market on Wilson Park or El Pollo inka on Hawthorne. I was told, the dish can be made without fries. The side cilantro sauces were ok. Dined here before the second stay at home order.... I've always loved El Rocoto so I actually ate here 2 times in the same week....I normally go to the Cerritos location but doesn't matter. Food is consistently good...I'm always stuck on their Pesto Spaghetti entree I forget what they call it. For me, this is the best Peruvian in the South Bay that you're going to get outside of a Peruana abuela's kitchen. Try the Pisco Sours too! Peruvian food done right but be prepared to pay $$ portions are pretty good thou and staff is friendly I've noticed the consistency in all these areas are consistent which I can't say the same for other Peruvian restaurants I been too. Tried the lomo saltado with chicken and it was great! If you need a bit (or a lot) more spice, ask for some rocoto and they'll bring a small bowl of chopped chiles. Table salsas were the best I've had in a while. Service was flawless. read more

I took my neighbors to El Rocoto which is my favorite Peruvian restaurant in the South Bay. It was also a great introduction to Peruvian cuisine before their South American cruise. I ordered the Pescado a lo Macho which was absolutely amazing. The dish included chunks of seafood on a bed of rice with a wonderful creamy aji amarillo sauce. My neighbors ordered and also loved their lomo saltado and saltado de pollo. The meats were satisfyingly tender and very tasty. Prices are reasonable but may be a bit higher than many other Peruvian restaurants. The food preparation and quality, though, are quite exceptional. Service was also accommodating and very good. If you come during Happy Hour, you will get a discount on your alcoholic drinks. El Rocoto will not disappoint and is still my favorite Peruvian restaurant in the South Bay. read more

Came in for dinner with a group of 4. You get bread with two dipping sauces to munch on while you wait for your food. We ordered a LOT, too much as we had a lot of leftovers: -Ceviche Sampler ($30) - 4 types of ceviche, each of them were SO good! There was a asian poke-like ceviche, an octopus, a mixed ceviche, and a fish one. -Beef Heart Skewers ($12) - Tender, not gamey, nicely seasoned and grilled. -Plantains ($5) - Yummy and sweet! as fried plantains are. -Oxtail Fettucine ($21) - the fettuccine is SO creamy and rich, delicious but decadent. I HIGHLY recommend this dish. -Braised Lamb, (Seco de Cordero) ($20) - good if you like lamb, fall of the bone, beautifully seasoned -Seafood and Saffron Rice (Arroz con Mariscos) ($18) -Stir fried beef and vegetables (Lomo Saltado) ($16) - didn't get to try this one, but you can't mess up stir fried steak! Some Orange Ice cream for dessert - this was alright, just ice cream with a mild fruity flavor. Parking is in a plaza. Nice ambience, they even brought out candles (fake ones) as it got dark. I have been coming to El Rocoto for years. This place knows Peruvian food and never lets me down. Most of their dishes come made fresh right out of the kitchen. I've had lomo saltado (beef and chicken), their ceviche is to die for as well. I will say something that varies, not big deal, is their table green salsa. Time to time it's not spicy at all and taste a bit bland. Other than that the staff is also great. Very helpful, the setup inside is nice. There is usually a wait here as it's a popular spot. During Covid they are offering to go and love the way they pack up everything. I live nearby so will definitely be back here soon! read more

Lomo Saltado offers tender angus steak with juicy tomatoes and caramelized onion, but the potatoes are just country fries, which didn't fare well after being soaked in the juice from the tomatoes and turned soggy. Granted, the mandated takeout option during COVID-19 didn't allow me to enjoy the plate right away, but I still don't think that the plate justifies a $20 meal. 6/9/16: Late review, apparently I checked in but forgot to post a review. I had a delicious bowl of Parihuela soup, a Peruvian bouillabaisse. The seafood was delicious and the soup was flavored with Aji Panca which is a red pepper paste (not hot but similar to red bell pepper or pimento). After adding the lime juice atop the soup, it was perfection. They give you plenty of seafood too, including fish, shrimp, calamari, crab and scallop. My other regularly ordered dish is Tacu Tacu, which is fried beans and rice with chicken Saltado. This is a wonderful stir fry of chicken, tomatoes and onion. And I have to get an order of fried plantains to complete any order here. El Rocoto is a little more expensive than local Peruvian restaurants but the price is worth it. The food is fantastic and the restaurant has a modern ambiance and is classy. They have ample parking and there is a credit union ATM next to the restaurant in case you need cash. They do accept credit cards however. Lastly, the staff are friendly and apparently know my favorite dishes, so that tells you something about their attentiveness. read more

Terrible food, I eat at this location several times, and the last 3 times it has been simply terrible. Today I ordered 2 Lomo Saltados, at $22 each, the total for this order was over $47. I will never ever order anything from this restaurant, the food was so dry and had no flavor, the portion was very small. I'm so disappointed as I'm very sorry to say I will never go back to this restaurant! I don't recommend it to anyone anymore! OK, so my brother-in-law has been raving about this place and has wanted to take us for months now, and we finally got the chance to visit yesterday. I wish I could give them a 3 1/2 stars. It wasn't terrible to the point where I won't return, but they were some minor hiccups. I would say the location is what you call a strip mall. There's a grocery store and a couple of banks, McDonald's, and a few other stores located in the same lot, so I mean, you may not get parking right upfront, but you will find parking in the lot. Now let's get to the real deal! We were greeted immediately when we entered the restaurant and were seated. We did wait about 5min before someone came over into our drink orders. We didn't realize that the gentleman who drops off bread only does just that. When he came with the bread, we asked for drinks, and he gave us a bit of a tude. He came back with my honeys beer and slammed the beer and cup down hard. We were talking, so it shocked us like wow, relax, bud. He was not friendly AT ALL. Our server Miguel however, was very pleasant and attentive. For appetizers, we ordered a PORK Tamale and fried calamari.There wasn't much meat in the tamale, but the masa was moist and yumm-ooo. I had the saltado with the Angus beef. My Honey had Saltado de pollo.Unfortunately they didn't bring out all of our dishes together. My brother in law food literally was brought out 30 min later. That was disappointing and as he go cut into the middle it was ice cold. Not a good look especially after waiting so long . Our server was apologetic and did offer to bring out some thing else but at that point he was over it.I enjoyed my food not trying to compare but I do like el pollo Inka cut of beef better.Honey absolutely loved his meal. My favorite Peruvian food place in SoCal. The complimentary bread and sauces are amazing and the food is great as well. Portion sizes are large and reasonably priced for the quality. My favorite menu items are the pescado a lo macho (fried fish filet with seafood and a creamy sauce) and carne a lo pobre (grilled ribeye steak with potatoes, egg, plantain and various sauces).
