Food was ok Service was the worst!!! Nobody was friendly, the server didn't speak English, every entrée came out at a different time and everyone's food was missing something. I was told that the tortillas were coming for my fajitas and she NEVER brought them. The combination platter was supposed to come with lettuce, tomato, rice , and sour cream and they didn't serve it. When we asked for it they charged us extra for it and we had to argue with the server about it. We asked for the menu and had to show her she was wrong. It was ridiculous. They weren't even busy and we had to wait almost an hour for the food. Thank god they had a QR code on the check so we could pay get out of there without waiting for her to come back, which by the way I had to get up and walk to the server station to grab To go boxes and the check because she never came to check on the table after the food was finally brought out. On this day, I thought about going down to Chili's but then I passed El Rey Tolteca and thought that since it was closer, and served the same food I was after, I would stop in and give it a try. The restaurant at the time that I visited (around 1 PM on a Tuesday) was very quiet and had almost nobody there. The staff member who served me was very attentive and she was consistently checking on me to see that everything was good, and that I did not need a refill on my drink. She was attentive enough to not be one of those "fly-on-the-wall" constantly-watching waitresses, nor was she the "out back smoking, and never seen" ones. The service provided was just the right mix, and came out to perfection. The reason for the one-star off from perfection is due to the food served. I asked for only cheese and sour cream. What came out was refried beans, covered in cheese in desperately wanted to put on my fajita, no additional cheese anywhere in sight, brown rice, 2 burning hot tortillas, and a mix of super-thin sliced chicken and steak strips mixed into a pile of onions and peppers. The dish could use more seasoning. Plate was extremely hot, to the point the waitress had to bring it out with a glove, with no warning to the customer, and also no plate to put the creation of a fajita on.... This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant for the 4 years I lived in Manassas. My husband and I were frequent diners and ate here at least once a week; if not 2-3 times per week (yes I love Mexican food that much)! We were in the area Saturday and decided to stop at our 'favorite' Mexican restaurant for lunch. When we arrived, the place was nearly empty, but that's not uncommon for them. There was no one at the front to greet us or seat us, but I could see a small crowd of women standing in the back and I heard them notify someone to come seat us. A very young girl came out and sat us in one of the booths on the upper level; one of the many booths we'd eaten at before. I told my husband what I wanted to drink and excused myself for the restroom. When I came back, I was surprised to learn that no one had bothered getting our drink orders yet. The young gal who seated us would also be our waitress. She came back with chips and salsa and got our drink orders, while also asking what we'd like to eat. I told her we were prepared to order our beverages, but not yet our food; we'd need a minute. She came back with our 2 unsweetened iced teas and we told her we'd like to order the nachos supreme with no beef (an old favorite of ours). While waiting for our food, we munched on the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa seemed spicier than I remembered it. I haven't lived in the Manassas area for a year, but it hasn't been that long since I'd been here (maybe 6 months or so). So it seemed like they changed their salsa up. It wasn't bad, but a tad spicier than I recall and liked. Food came out a little later than would be expected, considering the place was nearly dead. Our order was made right and our nachos were as good as I remember, for the most part. The problem with this last visit was our service. I didn't recognize but one of the waitresses. It looks like the place has employed all new staff and they just don't provide the exceptional service that we were accustomed to getting. After dropping off our food, our waitress stayed in the back, not to be seen again. We had to flag down another waitress to ask our waitress to come out, because we were done eating. She came out and cleared our table, asked if we wanted dessert, which we declined and said she'd be back with the bill. Fifteen minutes later! I was in mid conversation with my husband, looked down at my phone at the time, and realized how much time had passed and we still hadn't got our bill. I once again flagged down another waitress and said, "Can we please get our check?" Our waitress then comes out with our check. My husband and I immediately walk up to the register to pay. I don't know if this waitress was newly employed, but her attentiveness was severely lacking. Other than nostalgia, the restaurant just didn't provide the same experience to us that kept us coming back so many times in the past. After all of those years of visiting El Rey Tolteca, I don't think we'll be making our way back in, when we're in the area. Thinking that is the end of the chapter for us. read more

He said he would go get me the correct tacos & then came back out & said they said they don't want to make them, WHAT?!?! Then I ordered carna asada sopas and I got chicken. When we were checking out I was telling the young man he screwed my whole order up (but it was ok) and he actually told me I messed your tacos up but not your sopas. Excellent Mex. Great combinations, excellent quality and superior service. Me & my hijo went there for lunch on a Sat. We were immediately seated and had beverage service. They have sweet tea! You get your salsa and chips right away. The salsa is rich, thick and very tasty. They have close to 30 combinations. I had the burrito, quesidella and a taco. You get the option of having a hard shell or soft tortilla. I would recommend the hard shell because the soft is wrapped in foil and heated. The mositure from heating makes the tortilla too soft to pick up. We got great service from Edgar, we were rechiped and had salsa and beverage refresh quickly. I've been here twice - so far I'm not impressed. Both times my meals were on the low side of middle-of-the-road. First time I had their version of Nachos with the works, the second time an order of regular Nachos and a Beef Burrito and Chili Relleno combination. The cheese on the Nachos was sparse and unevenly applied - I asked for Jalapenos on the Nachos (according to out waiter the Nachos don't come with Jalapenos) - and they just tossed a small pile of Jalapenos into the center of the Nachos instead of distributing them throughout the dish. The Burrito was decent, I was not impressed with the Chili Relleno - I took one bite of it and left the rest. They do offer a very tasty salsa! read more

Great flavorfilled food The Salsa was delicious, packed with flavor and a little bit hot. Then came the queso which also was loaded with flavors. My chimichanga came exactly as I ordered (which I do order specific and a lot of places have trouble meeting my request) I received two chimichangas with guacamole and sour cream on top, fresh jalapeños inside exactly like I love them. The server was attentive but not overly. She took care to relay my order request to the kitchen staff so it was great. I definitely recommend this place and will be returning again. read more

Seems that El Rey Tolteca has lost its edge. Food is basically the same as always however prices are not in line with the quality. It is over priced. Also, the cut corners to make it clear that most dishes are beans or rice, not both. Not exactly the cleanest location. First time eating from this place and I feel sad. I spent over $40 for really bad Tex Mex food. The chorizo nachos were just a pile of chips, with melted cheese on it (that arrived congealed), greasy chorizo and 3 huge slices of tomatoes that would be fine on a caprese salad but not so much for finger food. They are the worst nachos I have ever had. The beef tostada was SOA (soggy on arrival) and loaded with lettuce, guacamole and those big ole slices of tomatoes. Tostadas are supposed to be crunchy and this one had not an inch of crisp anywhere. The toppings would have been better on the nachos. The beef chimichangas had the same issue with too much toppings. They were also soggy, mushy and unappetizing. It's frustrating to spend money on food that is inedible. This is actually not a bad little joint. Pretty good food. Has really awesome decor and plenty of seating. Quite a clean establishment as well. The wait staff are very friendly and attentive. They've got great chips and salsa. The salsa can differ from day to day though as they make new batches of it every day. Sometimes it's not, other days, not hot at all. Our first trip to this restaurant while visiting relatives, and I'll be honest, I was a little leery because I've found more bad Mexican food on the East Coast than what I'm accustomed to finding pretty much everywhere in my native Texas. My misgivings got a boost when we came inside and looked at the menu, which appeared maybe slightly overpriced. But any quibbling over the prices was forgotten as soon as the chips and salsa were served. The chips were freshly made, hot, and the salsa had a nice flavor without searing my tastebuds. Great so far. I ordered an enchilada platter, and what can I say, these were excellent. Enchiladas are my favorite thing on any Mexican menu and for that reason I'm very particular. Enchiladas in a restaurant had best be better than what I can make myself, and these definitely were. I can't remember the exact name of what I ordered, but there were four enchiladas, one beef, one chicken, one cheese, and one filled with what appeared to be refried beans, with each one better than the last. My wife was less complimentary about her street taco, which she said lacked seasoning, but then she's always liked her Mexican food a bit spicier than I like mine -- shameful to admit for a Texan, I know. The wife did wax rhapsodic about her rice and refried beans, saying they were perfectly done. The restaurant was clean, the staff friendly and attentive, and I would not hesitate to go back or recommend it. My wife's critique of her taco is the only reason I'm knocking one star from my review, otherwise I'd have given it 5 stars. read more

This was my 2nd visit here,& my daughter & I wondered why we didn't just always come here for Authentic Mexican food!!! It was, again, fabulous! 1st time I had a trio of enchiladas! Wonderful!!! I asked for shredded lettuce, (which is traditional, btw) and the waitress said "of course, they come with it". My daughter tried a Chili's Rellenos (pronounced Rey-yenos, since two ll's in a Spanish word become a "y" sound), with a shredded beef taco, & a tamale (chicken, I think). She loved every bite!!! 2nd time, I had the chili Rellenos, with an enchilada. We don't bother with rice, but we do get the beans for the "doggy" bag. We both left stuffed(!), but happy! A week or so later, we're wondering how soon we can get away with it again!!! Oh, the salsa too, was terrific with the chips. My daughter prefers super, super spicy, so she got her own dish & popped Tabasco (already on the table) into it! It worked! She also enjoyed a margarita! Give this place a try! Easily our favorite Mexican restaurant. The exterior may seem a little off-putting, but the menu is solid. Staff is friendly. The combo section of the menu has always been adequate for us. The burritos, tamales, and chili rellenos are my faves. The salsa is fresh and just spicy enough. Beans and rice taste home style. Order an additional large chips and salsa to go. Those will come in handy when you're looking for a late night snack! Prices are fair, foot is hot, cooked to order. I have nothing negative to report - we'll be dining here a lot! read more

Definitely my favorite Mexican joint. Usually I get the El Grande with a choice of three out of five, includes a side of rice and beans. Plenty of food for the big eaters and only $11. I have also tried other menu items and have not been disappointed. It never takes long to get the meal. It is always fresh and hot, covered in lots of sauce and cheese. The lettuce and tomato that comes with many meals is always crisp. The staff is always friendly as well. Greetings at the door, whether your are coming or going and smiling servers. On our recent visit to Manassas and DC we stopped at this delicious restaurant. Our party of three ordered very different things. 1. Quesadilla Mexicana This came with shredded beef or "steak tips" (seemingly just unshredded beef?). The waiter said we couldn't substitute grilled chicken, just shredded chicken so we tried the beef. This was the cheesiest LARGEST Quesadilla we've ever encountered any where but our favorite place back home in MO (which closed down, sadly). The beef was delicious, lean and super tender. It came with a huge pile of lettuce and a generous portion of guacamole and sour cream. 2. Enchiladas (can't remember the name, it was a little bit more than Supremas because it came with rice and beans) They were more than happy to add mole sauce to these for us. They came as ordered and the rice and beans were very very tasty. The rice had little peas and corn in it I think and we liked that addition too. 3. Combo #13 Burrito and Taco w/ rice and beans. When I asked what the "fillings" were the menu mentioned but didn't list I was told I could choose from "Beef, ground beef, chicken, cheese or beans" ... YES! I love hearing I have the option to enjoy variety. I asked if the shredded chicken was breast meat or dark and light mixed and I was told it was breast meat... and IT WAS BREAST MEAT!! Loved that too. Other waiters at other establishments have been confused about that in the past so I'm always delighted when its right. I asked for a side of cilantro and they happily agreed. Although the menu said another basket of chips would be $1 we were offered them and NOT charged. Yay! The waiters kept our drinks filled, stopped by frequently and asked questions about if we were satisfied. The food did take some time to come out but the chips and salsa were so good we didn't mind a bit. PLUS: the menu SAYS right on it that its all prepared fresh and so the kitchen takes a while to get it out. I imagine on a really busy day it could be even slower. But, again... when going to a sit-down restaurant, I expect that and the chips and salsa kept our tummies from growling. The waiters didn't mind all our questions and seemed genuinely happy to help us. I was pleasantly surprised when I got the bill because I wasn't charged a penny for the two generous bowls of chopped cilantro I requested. In our usual spot in CT we're always charged $1 for just ONE bowl. You can easily eat at this place for UNDER $10 since they had a huge combo list that was only $8, I think, among other entrees in the $10 range. However if you want a drink its going to be a bit more. The water was tasty and came with lemon so you can make "Poor Folks Lemonade" if you wanted to. Sweet Tea wasn't on the menu but we over heard someone order it, too bad because we would have loved to try it if we knew about it earlier in the meal. I will be visiting DC again and again and I will stay at Manassas again too, so I'm really looking forward to stopping by El Rey Tolteca to eat some of their delicious food again. read more

My go to Mexican restaurant! I have been coming here for almost 10 years and it has been consistently good every time. My appetizer of choice is the the el Rey dip which is not much of a dip but it's nachos with grilled shrimp,chicken and steak with queso blanco poured on top with pico de Gallo. My meal of choice is the del Rey enchiladas. The steak is cooked perfectly and the tomatillo sauce they pour over it is so good. The cheese they use is fantastic it's a white cheese that melts perfectly and tastes great especially in their quesadillas. read more

Went back again this time for lunch, and gave it another go. Ordered the Huevos Rancheros, as you know, it's pretty hard to mess up egg dishes, and they did a very nice job! It isn't as fancy as other places do it, but it does a bang up job! The rice and refried beans were an excellent complement to it, and the eggs were absolutely delicious with the chiili salsa on top, adding excellent flavor to the dish. Very nice feel for lunch. I know, it's an update, but I am not changing my star rating because it still very much is a 3-3.5/5 restaurant. The bottomless chips and salsa are nice, as the chips are very good, but the salsa does not have a strong enough kick and is too watery, plus it seems to run out very quickly. It's alright. Does not burn your tongue, but also isn't like eating diced and blended tomatoes and put into a bowl (you can see its homemade). But I wanted and expected more out of it, and sadly that did not happen. I'll return here, but this restaurant is already settling into what I already thought it was. I was told by a friend that the mole at El Rey Tolteca was very good (and trusting the person who recommended it) we made the 30 minute drive past a lot of decent Mexican restaurants between Sterling and Manassas to try it. It was well worth the trip!! Our waitress Xochitl was so sweet and gave us excellent service, answering all my husband's questions about what Tolteca means - she was so kind to take the time to answer, and knew all the answers. The mole was the best we have had outside of Mexico! We also had Pollo Fundida which I've never had before and it was SO good - sizzling chicken with tomatoes, peppers, and onions covered with queso - guacamole salad, sour cream, rice - DELICIOUS beans and tortillas! Asked for Dos Equis and they said they didn't have any. Asked for frozen margarita. Said machine was broken. So got the "rocks" margarita. Asked for Coors Light. Said didn't have it. (when leaving noticed in the beer cooler both beers) Then she came with the Dos Equis. ..??? We ordered. Two of the dishes were correct. One way off. Restaurant decor looks very nice and original, manager accommodated very well. I ordered steak fajita was a no no a little dry and excesive fat (not eatable kind) fajita steak has 2 cuts and the cheaper kind was bought. Another star taken slow service i wanted another drink and soft drinks were to the max for a good while intil i mentioned to the waitress about it.
