Looking for some post hike chow, we were traveling back into Bend and oh my my what caught my eye but El Sancho. I quickly turned left to check out this busy taco shop. Loved that all the food is homemade including the tortillas. We ordered the carne asada and chipotle tacos along with an order of eloté. We could not have been more pleased. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating and we grabbed a table under a big tree. The menu offers some great selections. I was tempted to try the chilaquiles but tacos always get me. Carmen's Famous Tortilla Soup looked really tasty as well, so it looks like I have a reason to return. Alcohol including tequila is also served along with refreshing aqua frescos. Our food came out fairly quickly and it was hot and ready to eat. Tacos were juicy and the eloté although not the best I have ever had still provided good flavor. Location is easy to find although parking was tight. Perhaps it was the time of day we came and it was a weekend. Service was quick and efficient. Ambiance was perfectly beautiful sitting amongst the trees. I would recommend should you find yourself in Bend stopping here for a little bit of Mexico! read more

We stopped here for dinner after a long drive, and these tacos really hit the spot! I was thrilled that everything on the menu was gluten-free. I ordered the veggie, fried shrimp, and grilled mahi-mahi tacos. The flavors were good, though I would have preferred more spice. I ended up adding a lot of hot sauce. We came here at the recommendation of a friend who lives in Bend and she couldn't have been more on point with this one! We were there for their awesome happy hour, tacos are three dollars and certain margaritas are discounted to $7.50. Being from San Diego we're pretty selective about our Mexican food choices but these tacos were legit really delicious!! I had a bite of the Carne Asada tacos my husband had ordered, nice firm chunks of beef and delicious seasoning. The Carnitas tacos I ordered were so good I normally only would eat one or two at the most but I ended up ordering a third taco. The chips and salsa are also on the happy hour menu for two bucks, the chips are homemade as well as the salsa you just can't beat that deal :-) also the staff here was outstanding and friendly great service a fun and funky atmosphere hands-down a winner in our book. El Sancho! I always give 2 tries before I review a place. First time, el sancho had the best service ever! Lady at the front counter on a Saturday night (September 28 to be exact) was so awesome. Friendly and inviting etc. gave us tons of extra sauce and her recommendations were awesome. Food was a solid 4 star. Not the best Mexican food in Bend, but definitely not bad.. tacos were something we'd try again! 2nd time was a little different experience. The staff was pulled straight out of Portlandia, everything seemed like a huge ask and everyone working there just seemed angry, customer service was atrocious. Tacos were still on par with the last time though. I think we will just be trying this place on Saturdays from now on (given that is when the First Lady we encountered is working.. pissed I can't remember her name!) Overall el sancho definitely isn't the best Mexican food in bend (at least authentic Mexican food.. that belongs to El Taquero) but they are good and somewhere I'd recommend trying. read more

My gf and I are fully vaccinated so for Spring Break we drove down to Bend and there is a lot of good food there but this was easily our favorite spot! I am pretty sure this is the location we went to but honestly it does not matter as I'm sure all of their locations are amazing since we originally tried their taco shack at Crux and loved that so much that when we were driving by this location we decided to come again. The highlights are definitely the barbacoa and carnitas. We tried a lot of their tacos but those were the two that were the best because of their spice and flavor. I honestly do not think you can go wrong with anything here but if you come make sure you order at least one of each of those as they were both delicious and better than what you will find at most other places. Somehow, I started writing a draft with a new review, and couldn't back out of it, so I'm just going to elaborate further come original review, now that we've come back two more times (in the same weekend; don't judge!) "People in Bend are mad for their tacos", said a local who we befriended at our previous stop, and who recommended we wander down to El Sancho, since we were walking through Drake Park anyway. We heeded his sage advice, and did not regret it. On our original visit: The Mahi Mahii taco(s) with lots of guac is probably the second best I've ever had, outside of the Richmond Night Market in Vancouver BC. We also partook of the Fried Shrimp taco, the Carne Asada, chicharonnes, a Pina Colada and a Pineapple Serrano cocktail. Sitting outside on a small picnic table on Galveston, with a warm breeze and tasty tacos, enjoying the warm sun (and fleeing the oppressive rain back in Portland) was the perfect early summer escape. This time around, we came on back-to-back days, to explore additional menu options (Potato and Poblano taco? Sign. Me. Up!) and everything we had was incredible! How much mahi-mahi was consumed again, and several fantastic drinks, such as the Hurricane and the Passionfruit margarita. True to form, just like last year: El Sancho has a solid system for keeping customers safe durind COVID-19. You queue up to a place your order, and they assign you a table, making sure to respect social distancing rules. Combine that with awesome food and perfect weather, and it's easy to understand why Benders (?) go mad for their tacos. We visit the Bend area a few times a year. Never miss El Sancho! We love their tacos (especially lengua and shrimp) and we split a side of beans & rice w fried eggs on top. The El Camino margarita is our go to beverage. Per their staff at their Galveston location, we understand that the Dekalb location will be making their debut return in early summer. Yay! read more

Came here post south sister hike on a Friday. Line was long but moved at a good pace. Order first (there's a separate line for those not dining there), you then get shuffled to a waiting area and then they will seat you once the next table is available. We didn't wait long before to get seated nor to receive our food. Friendly staff who were managing the flow of customers well. Now for the food. I loved the fact that their tortillas were homemade and fresh. We ordered carne asada, shrimp, barbacoa, and carnitas tacos. The shrimp was probably my favorite. We also ordered a Gordita with carnitas. The food was good but honestly, I love a street taco with meat, onion, and cilantro the best. I wish they had a better salsa for the tacos. Maybe you just have to order right but these weren't the greatest tacos. I really liked the chorizo and barbacoa but the carnitas , mahi mahi and shrimp were bland and flavorless. Maybe I'm still a LA snob (I have yet to find the street tacos I was used have easy access to). These have potential but they aren't worth the hype . I really liked por que no taqueria in PDX... and I thought these would be maybe a mix of that and the classic Tijuana style tacos you can get in San Diego. I did really like the chorizo and barbacoa so try those and I like how they fried the tortillas lightly ... it's a nice touch. Plus margaritas and ambiance are nice too. I think the salsa could use a little more kick or flavor too. Maybe it was an off day? I'd be down to try other things but I wouldn't go out of my way. read more
